Here are examples of what’s included:
Printable Booklet: Simply print double-sided and fold. Use this to further student learning of each trait and prominent figure.
Comprehension Activities: These can be used as follow up activities to check for understanding throughout the week.
Class Book Pages: Provide each student with an opportunity to share about their experience with the trait. Bind the pages into a class book! A pre-made cover is included.
Word Work Activities: An engaging way to practice phonics skills and to continue learning vocabulary.
Parent Letters: Keep parents in the loop with regular parent communication. Parent letters for each episode include an option written from the teacher and an option written in the voice of the student.
We’ve included the following suggested weekly lesson sequence for your convenience.
Monday
Start your week by watching The Character Tree video. • Before watching: If you have time for a quick discussion, you could ask
your students what they already know about the character trait of kindness. If they don’t bring them up on their own, remind your class of the other Character Tree episodes that taught about kindness; Jane Goodall, Johnny Appleseed and Mister Rogers.
• After watching: If you have time after the video, have students share examples of kindness from the video. To extend their concept of kindness you could ask them to think of a specific way that they could show this trait in the coming day or week.
Tuesday
Follow up the video with the foldable book. Read as a whole class, or have students read independently. These books would make a nice home-school connection, or add them to student’s book boxes or bags and keep them at school. Depending on how much time you have, the acts of kindness scenarios page would be a good fit as a subsequent activity.
Wednesday
Re-introduce students to the kindness awards! We recommend printing these on colored paper and cutting them down before handing them out to students. Let students know that since they are becoming experts on kindness, they will get to be on the lookout for students who are showing this trait. When they notice someone being kind, they can grab a Kindness Award, write their peers name and the reason for receiving the award. Students can give the award directly to their peer or follow a different system set that fits your management.
Thursday
Today would be a good day for the class to brainstorm various acts of kindness that they could engage in. After doing a whole class brainstorm, and recording your students responses on a chart, give your students the Acts of Kindness Ideas list so they can have their own to bring home and refer to.
FridayIf there is anything that you didn’t get to earlier in the week, finish that up today. Otherwise, today would be a good day for the making words activity and the word search.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to define the character trait of kindness, give an example and communicate observations of peers exhibiting the trait.
Common Core Standards: • SL.1.2 Discuss key details in a video• RI.1.2 Identify the main topic• RI.1.3 Describe the connection between a person and concept• RI.1.4 Determine the meaning of vocabulary
Picture Book Recommendations: These picture books would be great to read to your class during this week, as well as throughout the year! Use them to open up further discussions with your class about this week’s character trait.

The Character Tree Acts of Kindness
I learned that kindness means being nice and showing care for others. I learned that kindness is something I can share. Sharing kindness feels good to me and the person who I share it with. I can share kindness by using my words to encourage others. I can also share kindness through my actions by holding the door open for someone, or by donating food to people in need.
An act of kindness that I would like to do is:

Dear Family,
In this week’s episode of The Character Tree I learned about the trait of:
kindness

You can also help me learn more about kindness at home. At home, we can talk about ways we notice members of our family showing kindness. We can also talk about how we notice people in our community showing kindness.
Love,

Dear Family,
In this week’s episode of The Character Tree your child learned about the character trait of kindness. Your child learned that kindness means being nice and showing care for others.
This episode didn’t feature one specific prominent figure. Instead, this episode taught about acts of kindness and provided many examples of how your child can show kindness. Some of the examples discussed were sharing kindness by using words to encourage others, or sharing kindness with actions such as holding the door open for someone, or by donating food to people in need.
To encourage your child to continue thinking about and learning more about kindness at home you can talk about ways you notice members of your family showing kindness. You can also talk about how people in the community show kindness.
Sincerely,
The Character Tree Acts of Kindness

There are opportunities all throughout
your day to show kindness, all you need
to do is notice them! When you notice
someone having a hard time with
something you can give them
encouragement by saying something
like, “You are doing a great job, keep
trying!” or, you could offer to help
them. Sharing kindness in simple ways
throughout your day can make a big
difference!©The Primary Pal & The Character Treewww.charactertree.com
Can I help you lift that?
Thank you!
Did you know that kindness is a
character trait you can share with
others? Sharing kindness feels good
to the person who receives your
kindness, and it feels good to you too,
the person sharing kindness! There
are many ways to share kindness.
When we share kindness with others,
we can call that Acts of Kindness.

Acts of Kindness can be something
you plan to do, like collecting food or
blankets for people who need them.
Or, Acts of Kindness can be
unplanned. That means you do them
when you notice an opportunity. For
example, holding a door open for an
adult or another child. Or, offering
to carry groceries for your parent.
