While it is a great opportunity to experience new life at every turn...saying good-bye to the past is never easy. Yet...we must. As we are jolted into a new season in our great community, I'm hoping to find more reasons to embrace change with a stronger will than clinging to the past. Sharing kindness makes that transition easier. In our town of a thousand memories, thank you for your part in the current flood of mind and heart.

May all your trails be on high ground.

Peace & Goodwill –

THE BIG FLOOD After my morning walk today, I drove

around the lake to take a few photos of the storm's aftermath. Lot's of signs of the heavy rain and flooding. But, I was caught up in a different flood...a flood of memories.

I take these nostalgia journeys from time to

time and they serve several purposes. One is to remind me that nothing is totally stationary...life is a state of flux. It is only our need for stability that drives our longing for an unchangeable world. Friends come and go...loved ones are taken...our own beliefs are led down new trails. Resisting eventually gives way to acceptance. Clutching too tightly will crush the life out of outdated beliefs. Love is not returned until we give it the freedom to choose.

My walk and drive took me past so many

homes that once sheltered good friends...now new lives change the paint scheme and only trace memories of those past friends can be found. I am frequently told that change is good. My thinking self accepts this fact...it's that tender self that struggles with releasing yesterday.

There are many new structures replacing

the dismantled homes that have been hauled away in a dumpster. What has been left behind, other than memories, is mostly carried away with change. New life will fill the space and never give thought to the past.

City Hall Office Hours Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Welcome to Summer........finally! The best time of the year, in my opinion is right now through Labor Day, a throw back to when I was in school. As usual there are many varied activities scheduled to keep all of us busy if we partake in even some of them. As a reminder, if anyone observes any aggressive driving or dangerous incidents at Barry Road and Eastside Drive, please call the Kansas City, Missouri hotline 311. Please provide an accurate date, time, and all particulars of what happened. If we report enough incidents it is our wish that KCMO will install a traffic light or a roundabout. 'Two out of three ain't bad', as Meatloaf use to say. By this I mean that John Cookinham won a seat on the Parkville Special Road District and Alan York won a seat on the Platte City Special Road District. This is the first time the city of Weatherby Lake has had representation on either one of these Road District boards. If nothing else these two gentlemen will make sure that OUR tax dollars are being spent prudently. It's also our hope that some additional tax dollars will come back home to us. Thanks to everyone who voted for these gents and thank them when you see them for volunteering! I was the recipient of a 'Notice of change in assessed value of Real Estate', recently. This is code for 'your property taxes are going to go up at the end of this year.' The good news is that all of our homes and property are worth more now than they have been for the last 5 years or so, but it is painful to see. I call your attention to the back of the notice. Look how much of a slice that your city gets out of that pie. Along with utility franchise fees and a few other incidental fees, this is what funds the entire operation of our city, police, public works, administration, plowing snowy streets, everything. If you feel you would like to dispute your revised assessment contact the Assessor's office at www.co.platte.mo.us or by calling 816 858-3308 BEFORE June 17th. With that said, in March we completed the total resurface of Roberts Road from Westside Drive to Lynn's Lane. Because our city partnered with Platte County's asphalt bid, these last couple of years we have saved a significant amount of money in materials and labor to install new road surfaces. We were able to rehabilitate more than we would have been able to do otherwise. On Friday night June 7th, 6:30PM at Cristhaven Park the Platte County Sheriff & Weatherby Lake Police Departments are hosting a Movie Night. Free food, refreshments, games and tactical vehicles to check out! The first Gene Roberts Concert in the Park will also be at Cristhaven Park Friday, June 21st starting at 7PM. Hope to see you at these events or on the lake........Weatherby Lake, the best kept secret in the area! Steve Clark Mayor

The Weatherby Lake Historical Committee has been diligently looking at the next historical marker project.

It has been determined that the Weatherby Lake Community Center will be the next site for a historical marker. The goal is to have all facets of the project in place for the presentation of the marker sometime during the fall of 2019. History has been acquired and researched for accuracy. It is a dedicated goal of the Historical Committee to recognize those places within our community that have an important history connected with it.

The Anders Jacks Cemetery now has a great historical marker to help recognize its importance to Weatherby Lake’s history. The Historical Committee is mindful of these special places and is committed to recognizing them.

Funding for future markers is a priority with the Committee. Donations for these specials projects are gratefully accepted.

WLIC Update As this is written, Weatherby Lake is 10 days into the biblical 40 days and 40 nights of rain and, although the weather is rather depressing, WLIC’s work around the lake continues. The C Point and Dam road cracks have been patched and the C Point drive and parking areas have been partially resurfaced. The resurfacing will be finished in early June, weather permitting.

The new metal & concrete docks at C Point and the property by the Dam have been assembled and installed. They look great and hopefully will require less maintenance in future years. The gabion seawall at J Cove has been repaired and the debris and litter in the gabion dam east of Eastside Dr. at U Cove have been cleaned up. Also, the retaining gates in Rush Creek, which help keep refuse from north of the Lake from washing in North Cove, have been cleaned out and rebuilt.

Signage, motion detectors, cameras and retaining fences are being installed at the property by the Dam in conjunction with the Lake Season Kickoff on Sunday, June 2nd. Shrubs and other plants will be planted later. Spraying of bush honeysuckle at the property located on the corner of Barry Rd. & Westside Dr. has been completed and grants have been applied for and, in one case, received for environmental improvements at these properties.

As we celebrate the beginning of lake season, please remember to wear your new 2019 WLIC bracelets. Rest assured that the WLIC is committed to improving the quality of lake life and making the lake as safe as possible for our Members.

So all of you have fun and be safe this summer!

KNOW THY NEIGHBOR In-home monthly, fun & casual, gatherings for All residents for the purpose of getting to know your neighbors.

On the third Saturday of each month at 7:00 PM, October thru May (except December), volunteer Weatherby Lake residents rotate hosting a casual social gathering in their homes. There are two options for the gatherings each month, either a casual sit-down meal or a Happy Hour style gathering with just appetizers. A host determines the number of guests they have. Neither the host nor the guest knows the identity of the other guests ahead of time.

The focus for both styles of the small group gatherings is not on the food, but rather on meeting neighbors, getting to know one another and developing friendships.

I WANT TO PARTICIPATE, WHAT DO I DO

FOR NOW: To be on the monthly reminder list, just email us your NAME, PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS to: [email protected].

Each month you will be sent a reminder of the upcoming gathering. If you choose to participate that month, (you are not required to attend every time), you then choose either the sit-down option or the Happy Hour. Then you will be sent the location and food assignment for your gathering. See Option descriptions below.

Attend a Dinner: You will take one pre-assigned dish (appetizer, vegetable, salad with bread, or dessert), and your own beverage of choice.

Host a Dinner: You provide your home, the main dish, water, coffee and tea.

Attend a Happy Hour: You take an appetizer and your own beverage of choice.

Host a Happy Hour: You provide your home, one appetizer, tea and water.

NOTE: KNOW THY NEIGHBOR is celebrating over 30 years of bringing Weatherby Lake neighbors together. As we begin this new season, we are updating the email list. So, even if you have been on the previous contact list, you will need to sign up, again. Just email your name, address, phone number, and the email address you prefer to be contacted at. This will insure that you will receive the monthly reminder. Send your info to [email protected]
