History of the National Kidney Foundation
The National Kidney Foundation was established in 1950 by Ada DeBold in an eff ort to save the life of her young son who had been diagnosed with pediatric nephrosis. In a heroic goal to find a cure, Ada brought together a group of clinicians and researchers from around the United States to share their findings and develop new approaches to understanding and treating the disease. The collaboration that resulted from Ada’s eff orts to raise awareness, encourage research and provide support and treatment formed the basis of the National Kidney Foundation.
Mission
The National Kidney Foundation is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families aff ected by kidney disease, and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
The National Kidney Foundation is proud to be the leading organization in the United States dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease, and we aim to share our knowledge with those at risk, those aff ected by kidney disease and all those who care for and about them.
Our goal is to educate the public about the critical role the kidneys play in the body and how to keep them healthy.
VISIONTo enhance the lives
of everyone with,
at risk of,
or aff ected by
kidney disease.

The National Kidney Foundation is and will continue to be a leading resource for those touched by kidney disease, and is focused on three core pillars:
Pillar I Awareness
Pillar II Prevention
Pillar III Treatment
• Educating Americans through multimedia public awareness initiatives about kidney disease and ways to reduce their risk.
• Empowering those at risk to take action at free, local kidney health screenings.
• Supporting kidney patients, organ donors, and their families - online at www.kidney.org, on the phone toll-free at 1-855-NKF-Cares, and through personal peer-mentoring.
• Advocating as the voice of the kidney patient in Washington DC to address the organ donor shortage, fund more kidney research, and defend Medicare coverage for kidney disease.
• Sharing the latest treatment information and practices with healthcare providers so patients get the best possible care.

OUR TARGET: KIDNEY DISEASEChronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy. You may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.
• 1 in 9, or 26 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk.
• Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
• High risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension and family history of kidney failure.
• African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Seniors are at increased risk.
• Three simple tests can detect CKD: blood pressure, urine albumin and serum creatinine.
• 1 in 3 adults, 73 million, are at increased risk for kidney disease because of high blood pressure
• Kidney disease kills 90,000 each year – more than breast or prostate cancer

THE KIDNEY BALL
Event Chair: Taylor Campitelli
The Kidney Ball is a black-tie gala founded in 1984 and this year marks our 30th anniversary– our Pearl Anniversary. This is the premier event for the renal physicians from New Jersey, Delaware, Eastern and Central Pennsylvania and the event raises funds to support ongoing programs in medical research, patient and community services, professional and community education, and organ donation awareness run by the NKF Serving the Delaware Valley. It is attended by more than 400 guests, including Philadelphia business, government and community leaders, C-level executives, along with kidney patients and their families. The NKF also honors members of the community at the event who have championed our mission and are dedicated to helping those with kidney disease.

Bobby Rydell is the ‘60s teen idol and native Philadelphian who rose to fame with such hits as “Wild One”, “Wildwood Days”, and “Volare”. In July 2012, Bobby underwent a life-saving kidney and liver transplant and has since made it his mission to raise awareness about the need for organ donations.
Due to Bobby’s successes and important milestones with The National Kidney Foundation, we have honored him as not only the namesake of our volunteer honoree award, but also as the first National Kidney Foundation Ambassador of the Delaware Valley Division.
Bobby Rydell Volunteer Honoree:
FRAN LYNAM
When Fran was just sixteen years old, he was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis (GN), a severe renal disease which aff ected both of his kidneys. By the time he turned twenty and started his freshman year at Lehigh University, he was on dialysis. Fran has endured one failed transplant and eleven years of dialysis, but in 1986, he underwent a successful kidney transplant.
Today, Fran is a teacher at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Malvern and a beloved volunteer for the NKF. He is a participant in the Chester County Kidney Walk and the NKF Cadillac Golf Classic. Fran is married to Rochelle Lynam, and is one of eleven children.
