OnSaturday,June2,about60residentsofFountainview,wearingtheirfinestorangeoutfits,gatheredintheEventCenterforaphototoshowthatalthoughthepressmayhavemovedon,weatFountainviewwerestillpreparedtodemonstrateagainstgunviolence.WestoodinsolidaritywiththeL.A.‐basedorganizationWomenAgainstGunViolence,celebratingits25thyearofactivity.WestoodinsupportofthestudentsofMarjoryStonemanDouglasHighSchoolinParkland,FloridawhoseliveswereforeverchangedbythehorrendousshootingthattookplacethereonFebruary14,2018.Wewillnotforget! WesentthephototoWomenAgainstGunViolenceandtoourelectedrepresentativesatlocal,stateandnationallevels.WhenthestoryoftheshootinginFloridafirsthittheheadlines,IwascuriousaboutMarjoryStonemanDouglasforwhomthehighschoolwasnamed.Notreadingorhearinganything,Ididmyownresearchandfoundheramazingstory. Perhapsthemostastonishingfactaboutheristhatshelivedtobe108yearsold(1890‐1998)!Itwasamostproductiveliferightuptotheend.Shewasajournalist,prolificauthorofshortstorybooks,women’ssuffrageadvocateandaconservationist.At79,shewasaskedtohelpsavetheFloridaEverglades,viewedasaworthlessswamp,ratherthanatreasuredriver.Asarelentlessreporterandfearlesscrusadershedidthat.(Let’shearitforusseniors!)ShewroteabookthatpreservedtheEvergladesfrom

developmentandrestoredittoitsnaturalstate.TheimpactofherbookTheEverglades:RiverofGrass(1947)hasbeencomparedtothatofRachelCarsonandherbookSilentSpring(1962).(Let’shearitforuswomen!) IhopethatthestoryoftheremarkableMarjoryStonemanDouglasmotivatestheamazingkidsatthehighschoolnamedforher.Theyspokeoutsobrilliantlyimmediatelyaftertheshooting,andsince.Maytheycontinuetogivevoicetoherinspiringleadershipandadvocacy. WeatFountainviewworeorangeandstoodsilentlyinhermemory.

Women’s History Month

OnMarch28,18residentsparticipatedinalovelyprogramcelebrating“Women’sHistoryMonth”.OurownLauriKamiel,ActivitiesCoordinator,didamasterfuljobinlocatingmeaningfulmaterial,appropriatevideos,andinorganizingandannouncingtheprogram.Wechosefromhersuggestedreadingsorprovidedourownselections.Theresultwasavaried,informativeanddramaticpresentation.

SomeofthehighlightswereDickBraunchanting“EishetChayil”(WomanofValor),SophiaAbramsrecitinginSpanish“YoMismaFuiMiRuta”,andJoyPicustellingusaboutthehistoryofWomen’sHistoryMonth.Someofthereadingswerehistorical(Ireadapoem“theRightsofWomen”writtenin1792),amusing,informativeandinspirational. Weenjoyedpracticingandpresenting,andtheaudienceseemedveryreceptive.ThanksagaintoLauriforherhardwork.

ThecelebrationofLeonardBernstein’slifeisnotanephemeralthing.Itwillremainaconstant.InvisitingSkirballonMay9,wediscoveredhismultitudeoftalents. Hisfather’sambitionforhissonwastotakeoverhisbeautysupplybusiness.“Musicianscan’tmakealiving.”Instead,hebecameworld‐renownedinhisfield. Acomposerofmusicforopera,Broadwayshows,ballet,symphonicandchoralmusic–hewas

alsoaT.V.personality,wrotepoetry,lecturedandwroteHollywoodscripts.HiscrowningglorywasasconductoroftheNewYorkPhilharmonic.

MakingclassicalmusicavibrantpartofAmericanculturewasadrivingforce.Thisshouldbetheresumeoffivemen. Therewerecostumesfromfilmandtheaterinthishighlydiversifiedexhibit.Hiscorrespondenceshowedgreatcontributionstosocialjusticecausestowhichhelentastrongandinfluentialvoice.AfilmofBernsteinconductingexhibitedhisdramaticandexuberantstyle. Prolificinallhedid,hewaslovedandrespectedbysomanyinallwalksoflife.Heandhiswifeofmanyhappyyearswerejetsetters.Theyhadtwochildren.Acomplexpersonalityatthesametime,hehadalifetimepartnerwithwhomhespenthislastyears.

OnFriday,May25at11:00am,FountainviewresidentsenjoyedtheirfirstTotShabbat.Agroupofadorablepre‐schoolers,ranginginagefromeighteenmonthstofiveyears,cametovisitusfromtheMalibuJewishCenterandSynagogue.TheywereaccompaniedbyCantorMarceloGindlinandRabbiMichaelSchwartz. ThechildrenentertainedbysingingHebrewsongs.TheywereledbyCantorGindlinwhoaccompaniedthemonhisguitar.Afterthesinging,everyoneenjoyedchallahandjuiceandtheresidentsinteractedwiththechildren. Itwasamemorableandenjoyableexperience.

Our New Statue 

ByLilBaker NowdecoratingourmainpatioatFountainviewisthelatestworkofartonourlovelygrounds.Thedonationofthe“Family”isanabstractfourfeethighofthreeseatedfigurescastinbronze.Theobjectofmanyremarks,almostalladmiring,reflectshowartaffectsus.Yes,even“MonaLisa”hearscommentstoherfacethatcouldmakeherblush. RobertG.Metzner,theartist,wasaninventorfromchildhood.Histurntableisstillabasic.Hisprototypeofthegas/electrichybridautomobileresidesinthePetersonAutomotiveMuseum.Heretiredatage42.Hetookupsculpting,andhisworksareondisplayatUCLA,Caltechandelsewhere.Hisfamilyandsailboatracingfilledhislifefortherestofhis97years. Thiswonderfuladditionwhichblendssonicelybetweenthefireplaceandthewaterfall,addstoourgoodfortuneofbeingaFountainviewresident.PhotobyMikeMaroko  

Mother’s Day 2018

Whatawonderfuldayitwasformostofus.Anexhilaratingspiritpervadedthefamily‐filledrooms.Pleasenote,IsaidroomsbecausethereservationsoverflowedintotheLoungeandthePrivateDiningRoom.Evenso,manyresidentswerealsowinedanddinedawayfromFountainview.Beautifulflowersblendedwiththecolorfultablecloths.AndOH,thatbuffet!Yes,thatdeliciousbuffetthatwenthalfwayaroundtheroomwasmagnificent.Angelandtheserversshouldhavebeenjustifiablyproud.Wecan’tthankthemenough. Thechampagneandtastydrinkswerenotneededtoaddtothehighspiritsthatprevailedamongstus,buttheyweretherefortheasking.Partiesrangedfromsettingsof12tosingleresidentswhodidn’tletthe

celebrationsgoonwithoutthem.Festiveindeed! Fumaniweavedamongtablesserenadingus,andDavidplayedcontinuouslyforourentertainment.Yes,welefthappilysatisfiedandfeelinggreat.

ThankstoRuthandAllenOrbuchforbringingCantorNathanLamtoFountainviewonJune12thinhonorofAllen’s90thbirthday.RuthandAllenaremembersofStephenWiseTemplewhereCantorLamhasservedforover40years. Itwasadelightfuleveningofmusic,history,memoriesandhumor.DavidKatesaccompaniedatthekeyboardandtwolovelyyoungladiesnamedSarahsangduetswithCantorLamaswellassomeimpressivesolos.CantorLamgavemuchcredittohisteachers,CantorAllanMichaelsonfromAdatAriEl,andRabbiHaroldSchulweisfromValleyBethShalom. Wealljoinedinsinging“BieMirBistuShane”butlistenedrespectivelytoabeautifulrenditionof“SimShalom”.Particularlymovingwas“L’dorV’dor”whichisHebrewforfromgenerationtogeneration.“FiddlerontheRoof”waswellrepresentedwithalovelyduetof“SunriseSunset”andaspirited“IfIWereaRichMan”byCantorLam.Theconcertcametoarousingconclusionwith“AdonOlam”andhappyaudienceparticipation. Whatanicebirthdaytreatforallofus!

A Shared Joyous Birthday Gift ByLilBaker

Thesplendidandgenerous90thbirthdaypresentfromRuthtoAllenOrbuchwasalsosharedwithus,theresidentsofFountainview.CantorNathanLaminconcertwaswarmlyofferedtoapackedhouseinourtheater,apropersiteforthepresentationsothatmoreofuscouldseeandenjoyitcomfortably.Althoughthestagespacewaslimited,CantorLamwithhisstories,jokesandwonderfulsingingcapturedhisaudience.Theaccompanyingmembersofhiscrew,Davidonthekeyboard,Jeffonthedrums,andthetwoSarahswhowerethevocalists,eachoneanartistinhisownright,blendedintoaneveningofmusicaldelight.Weleftwithsmilesonourfacesandpraisesonourlips.

Ihadtheopportunityofmeetingeachoftheartistsonarrival,goodfun.Theircomraderywasasiftheyweretheaudiencewithanenjoyableexperienceawaitingthem.CantorLamgreetedtheOrbuchsasfondandlong‐termfriendswhoweregladtobedoingthisveryspecialevent.Allthatwecanaddis,“Thankyou,RuthandAllen!”

OnSunday,June4at2:00pm,FountainviewresidentsweredelightfullyentertainedbyHazzanMikeSteinandhisShirDelightKlezmerBand.ThebandconsistedofCantorMike,whoplayedtheviolin,guitarandalsosang.Withhimwasaperformeronthekeyboard,anotheroneontheviolin,abugler,adrummerandalittleladywhotappedouttherhythmswithherhandonasmalldrum. Thegroupplayedmanyfamiliarsongsthatwereenjoyedbyall.Somemembersoftheaudiencewereinspiredtogetupanddance. Wearealllookingforwardtothecantor’snextvisit.

ByDr.HarryShragg Thisisafollowuptothe“FallingEpidemic”articleinthelastissueoftheView.Thereisa“MorningCheck‐InProgram”availabletoushereatFountainview.Itisamajorsafetyeffort.Bycalling(818)654.5540by11:00ameachmorningandjuststatingyourapartmentnumber,theConciergewillknowwhetheryouarealiveandwellornot.Ifthereisnomessagefromyouby11:00am,Conciergewillcalltocheckonyou.Ifyoudonotanswer,Securitywillgotoyourapartmenttoconfirmyouareallrightor,ifnecessary,providewhateverhelpyouneed. Atthepresenttime,thisisanoptionalprogram,butitshouldbemandatoryforeveryoneofus.Currently,thereareonly49singleresidentswhohavesignedupfortheprogram.Thirtyeight(38)singleresidentsand19coupleshavenotsignedup. Asitturnsout,therearequiteafewofusLosAngelesnativeslivingatFountainview,andwe’veorganizedagroupthatwillbemeetingregularlytoreminisceaboutour“goodolddays.”TheformationofthegroupwasthebrainchildofJohnBeyerandme.AtourMaymeetingwetalkedabouthighschooldays,wetalkedaboutwhichhospitalswewerebornin,aboutwhichhospitalsourkidswereborn.Andthenumberoftopicstodiscussisvirtuallyunlimited;soarethepossibleplacestovisit. AgrandgalacelebrationhonoringMalkahSchulweiswasheldatValleyBethShalomonMay6.Itwasaveryfestiveoccasionwithahugenumberofpeopleattending.Theeveningincludedacocktailhour,aprogram,anddinnerfollowedbyentertainment.Attheprogram,theDirectoroftheSchulweisDaySchool,ShevaLocke,wasalsohonored.Therewasavideotribute,speakersandpresentationtohonorSheva,andthehonoreespokeaswell.WhenMalkahwasrecognized,shespokeatlengthinresponsetoaninterviewquestionbyRabbiEdFeinsteinaboutherupbringingwithhertraditionallyobservantgrandmother.Malkahtalkedaboutgodlinessandourneedtobemore;domore;

LorenzoHugheshasalsoworkedhereintandemwithEnriquethesamelengthoftime.Lorenzoismarried.HeandhiswifeJennifermaketheirhomeinNorthHillswiththeirson,whois1‐1/2yearsold,andtheyareexpectinganotherlittleboy.Lorenzohasalsostudiedforandappliedtothe
