SleepWe will leave at 8:30 p.m. and sleep on the bus. We must try
to get some sleep. This applies to the night in the hotel as
well.
If you don’t get some sleep, you will be in great danger or sleeping through “Matilda” since it comes at the end of a long day in the city.
Curfew time will be set when we get to the hotel. It will be late when we get there so there will be very little time outside of rooms once we are there.
No boys in girls rooms and no girls in boys rooms.
A lights out/go to sleep time is difficult to enforce but again, try to get some sleep and be respectful of your roommates.
Curfew
Keep noise down so that others can sleep We should be able to have food and drink on the
bus, unless the driver says otherwise, but you must throw the garbage away
Only use the bathroom on the bus if it is an emergency. Otherwise, go at rest stops. The bathroom is like a bank – anything you deposit draws interest over time.
The bus will be locked when we are not on it so personal items can be left safely
Music can only be played with headphones and at a level that only you can hear it
Bus etiquette
Breakfasts, lunches, and snacks are not included.
Dinner on Thursday night will be at “Planet Hollywood” and is included
Dinner on Wednesday night is also included but not together. Each person will be given $20 to spend. Please try to make the most of the NY experience rather than do fast food this night.
Meals
Tipping is not optional – especially in NY. They are likely to follow you out of the restaurant.
An appropriate tip is at least 15%. 18% is appropriate for good service.
The waiters are only paid through tips and often have to “Tip out”. If you don’t tip, they may actually have to pay to wait on you.
The bus driver tip is already taken care of.
Tipping
You will have some free time. You must stay in a group of at least three unless you are with an adult.
Make sure you know how to get back to the meeting places and allow time to do so. You may go where you wish, as long as long as it is within walking distance. You are not permitted to take cabs, subways, buses, etc.
Safety
My cell # is 919-895-0293. This is only being given for the sake of safety and so that parents can contact me. It is not so you can call me about every little thing.
Before leaving tonight, make sure I have cell #’s for students and parents. If a student won’t have a phone with them that’s fine. Someone in a group with them will.
Contact information
Manhattan is designed on a grid. Streets run east to west and avenues run north to south. Almost all are simply numbered and it’s easy to follow. There can be a lot more distance between avenues than between streets.
There are no alleys in Manhattan. The fear of being mugged in a dark ally is an urban myth.
New York directions
Nederlander Theatre (Newsies) 208 W 41st St Shubert Theatre (Matilda)
225 W 44th St Planet Hollywood
45th and Broadway 1540 Broadway
Juniors W 45th between Broadway and 8th Ave
Addresses
Always cross at the lights. New York traffic is crazy and you can get tickets for jaywalking.
Keep your money secured and don’t flash a lot of cash around.
If we go to Chinatown, DO NOT go into back rooms or get into vans. Use common sense.
Safety
Dress comfortably enough to move around the city but nicely enough to be acceptable at the theatre
Dress
We will only be in the hotel for one night, so there is no need to pack heavily.
You will not have access to things stored under the bus till we get to the hotel
If you wish to wear something comfortable on the bus and then change at a rest stop, you may do so but you will not be able to get anything from under the bus so this must be in a small carry-on.
Pack a toothbrush and toothpaste in your carry on for the morning as well.
Packing
No headphones or talking while guides of any sort are talking
In restaurants, conduct yourselves as adults.
This bears repeating – during free time, you must be in groups of at least 3 or have an adult with you.
General behavior
No cell phones – turn them OFF Refrain from talking No hats Often, they will not seat people once the act
has started, until there is a break If you get up during an act, you may not be
permitted to return to your seat until a break
It is likely that we may be there during a “Broadway Cares” time. It is totally up to you if you make a donation or not.
Behavior at the shows
Basic school rules and common sense rules apply. Because this is a school trip, disciplinary action can be taken by the school in addition to by Mr. Coley
Failure to follow rules, including the 3 to a group rule, may result in being assigned to an adult for constant supervision.
Discipline
Because the bus will leave us in the morning and be gone all day, save large purchases for night. The best time to buy stuff will be after dinner on the first night. Seats in Broadway theatre’s have very little leg room.
We may be going to Chinatown the first night. I will discuss logistics of this with the driver on the way up.
Shopping
Be careful about buying stuff off the street. The sales are usually illegal and if they see a cop, they may run off at a moments notice.
Offers that sound too good to be true, are.
Shopping
There will be people who ask for money. Most are scam artists. Don’t give them your money.
If someone is doing something (Playing an instrument, singing, mime, etc.) and you wish to donate, that is more sensible and appropriate.
Charity
You MUST be on time when we meet. We have appointment times for everything.
I will have everyone’s cell number and everyone will have mine. If I call and you are not going to be able to get in for our appointment, we may have to go without you.
We will meet for shows half an hour before curtain.
Punctuality
We will need some people to have a one minute monologue ready to use at the workshop. Everyone may not have time to do there’s, but be prepared. This is a rare opportunity to have a Broadway professional work with you. Make the most of it.
Workshop
Rather than count off when we meet, check in with your group leader. Group leaders will check in with me. As long as all the leaders are there, I know the group is there.

Check out the M & M’s Store, Toys R Us, and NBC Studios Store as well as the usual NY tourist shops
Parents, I will post updates occasionally on the “LCHS Drama” Facebook page from my phone. Like us there to see them.
Suggestions/tips
Great things to shop for in Chinatown include purses and sunglasses. You can probably talk them down.
If you need to ask directions, the street venders are usually helpful.
Don’t pay to do any tours such as the wax museum or Ripley’s without asking how long it will take to determine if there is time. There probably isn’t.
Ear plugs may help you with sleeping on the bus.
More suggestions
Take a chance and gain a new experience. Go into the type of store you don’t usually shop in (If age appropriate). Eat at an unfamiliar place and order something you’ve never tried before. Volunteer at NBC Studios and the workshop.
Take pictures and videos but not too many. Live in the moment more than you try to capture it for the future. It won’t be the same anyway and you’ll have missed out on things.
Pay close attention to things that are announced. Mistakes usually come as a result of people not listening.
