Marriage: Couples are asked to consult with a priest at least twelve months prior to the intended date to allow sufficient time for marriage preparation, including participation in the Archdiocese Marriage Preparation Program.

Ministry to the Sick: Please contact the Parish Office and inform us of anyone who is unable to attend Mass and would like to receive Holy Communion. Never think that the priest is too busy to be present for your loved one for a visit.

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing. Inform the Parish Office if you or someone you know is in need of this Sacrament.

Registration Welcome to new parishioners! Be sure to introduce yourself to the priest following Mass. Also, so that you may participate fully in parish life please register with the Parish Office and we will include you and your family in our records to be able to communicate with you. Weekly Reflection What is the Kingdom of God? Jesus teaches about the Kingdom a lot because it is key. The Kingdom is so deep, Jesus uses images to invite us to enter into understanding of the Kingdom with our imagination, our heart and our soul not just our head. He compares the Kingdom to a treasure, to a pearl of great price. It is something we should desire above all else. It is something we should prioritize and give up other things in order to attain. We pray for it in the Our Father but what is it? The Kingdom of God is where God and humanity meet; where God and humanity are reunited. It is present, right now on this earth because of Jesus. We do experience God in our daily lives in the here and now. However, it is only partial. The Kingdom of God in its fullness comes only after death. At that point we will see God as God truly is and be united with Him. God has placed great trust in us by inviting us to participate in building His Kingdom in our daily lives here on earth. Remember the 2 greatest directives are to Love God and Love Neighbor. That builds the Kingdom. We are in the midst of a great trial in the form of the COVID19 Pandemic. Where do you see the Kingdom of God in the

present? We see it in the great acts of love demonstrated by so many. We see it in the encouraging notes many of you have sent us. We see it in signs of love and gratitude posted all around our

community on lawns and in shop windows. We see it in the concern you have for the poor and the action you take by dropping off food. We see it in parishioners driving others to medical appointments, calling to check in on people and delivering groceries. We see it in the group that prays the rosary in the backyard Tuesday mornings, in the prayer line and in the prayers you say at home. We see it in the group of 30 priests who anointed 1,100 extremely ill or dying patients with COVID 19 (and none of the priests got the virus). We see it in the love and sacrifice of the parents in our community. We see it in the efforts of those working for racial reconciliation and social equality. We see the Kingdom in so many ways! God bless you in the way you personally build the Kingdom of God. It is our treasure and worth our greatest effort. Mary

For over two decades, The Parish Health Ministry at Saint John’s offers parishioners and the community of the Parkway a touch point for health care and wellness. Under the caring guidance and direction of nurse Kathleen Rowlings, the growth of the Parish Health

Ministry and its offerings for blood pressure screenings, advice on better health, and prayer shawls for the sick has been instrumental for the Saint John’s community. I would like to personally thank Kathy for her guidance and support, as she steps down from this vital role. As I begin to attempt to fill Kathy’s shoes, I look forward to a time when we can return to serving our community in person for blood pressure and now, hearing screenings in my capacity as a doctor of Audiology. First Communion This Sunday, six of our Faith Formation students are receiving their First Communion. Surrounded by the tranquility of tall trees and flowers; the church’s backyard is a perfect spot for the first communicants to celebrate the important milestone. The children had been preparing for this joyful occasion all year and were disappointed when we were unable to gather together for the traditional ceremonies in May. Fr. John suggested that we add the First Eucharist celebration to our existing outdoor Sunday liturgies throughout the summer months. This is not what we thought First Communion 2020 would look like! Certainly we miss the children in white dresses and suits and a packed church. Without a doubt these special classes of 2020, whether graduates or communicants, give us a unique gift of hope and love. All of these beautiful children with their smiles and excitement at the prospect of receiving Jesus for the first time remind us of our own first Communion. They rekindle in us that sense of awe of being in the presence of God. Sitting beside their parents and families, surrounded by their faith community, these kids remind us that we are all family here at Saint John’s. We need the love and support of each other in order to stay strong and grow in faith. We congratulate our First Communion class and their parents. We thank the second grade teacher, Mr. Scott St. Coeur, for helping the children prepare for this special day. Today we celebrate Cecelia Oliveri, Davi Oliveri, Matthew Pietchel, Mary Ryan, Declan Walsh, and Ryan Galaska. As we amble through the summer, we look forward to more First Communion celebrations; meanwhile take a few quiet moments to remember the joy and wonder of your own First Communion Day.

Saint James the Apostle One of the favored three who had the privilege of witness-ing the Transfiguration, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus, and the agony in Gethsemani. The Feast Day for Saint James the Apostle is celebrated on July 25. “He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and fol-lowed him” (Mark 1:19-20).

Community Corner

More than forty women and men from the Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) serve in these neighborhoods and communities. These volunteers are supported by one another and by “spiritual reflectors” whose task is to help the volunteers look at their service and to reflect upon its deeper meaning for themselves and for those whom they serve. New England Ignatian volunteers teach, mentor, and advise in a variety of educational programs; provide services to potentially homeless elders; educate and locate resources for adult students and immigrants; assist older clients with medical appointments and entitlement benefits; offer administrative, development and HR support to non-profit staff; coordinate food and furniture outreach to families in need; coach job seekers in a culinary arts program; and, organize retreats for homeless and formerly homeless women and men. Ignatian Volunteers are mature men and women who share their time and talents in service to their community, and who participate in a year-long spiritual development program, including prayer and reflection in the Jesuit tradition. New England Ignatian Volunteers commit to two days per week of service in parishes, schools or non-profit organizations working directly with those experiencing poverty or marginalization, or in the pursuit of social justice. The service commitment takes place over a ten-month period. During the period of service, the volunteer engages in spiritual reflection and journaling with the assistance of a “reflector” whom he or she meets monthly. All volunteers take part in two days of reflection, one overnight retreat, and monthly meetings of the entire group of volunteers. Volunteers share their reflection and service experiences in these gatherings and probe their deeper meaning.
