We’re
L king for….
The Centre’s Annual Garage Sale is
scheduled for
FRIDAY September 6
2 p.m.—6 p.m.
AND
SATURDAY September 7th
8 a.m.—12 noon.
2 days of bargains to be had!
If you are downsizing or looking to re-home
your gently used items, think of the Centre!
Donations will be accepted up to
September 5. We take all kinds of gently-
used stuff, but we have to draw the line
at no computers, electronics, TVs and
larger items. If interested in helping out
during the summer to sort the donations or on
the days of the sale, leave your name at the
office and we’ll contact you.
Our board would like to ask you to SHARE your
ideas for a logo and tag line.
We KNOW there are many creative MEMBERS
at the Centre, so we would like to INVITE you to
pass your ideas on to US. Our name change
brought positive responses so we would like to
take the next step and create our very own
LOGO and Tag Line.
Please note that we are in a very preliminary
stage of this new endeavor and the LOGO and
Tag Line we choose may be made up from a
combination of submissions. We are looking for
a logo that will represent ACTIVE LIVING and is
simple enough to use on printed materials.
A short TAG LINE of a few words that is
welcoming and upbeat is what we are looking
for!
Submissions may be dropped off at the Centre’s
office
Let’s have some fun and get thinking…..

“Evil”– Science

Humanity's
Dark Side
Chapter 8
Dr. Julia
Shaw
What is it about evil that we find so compelling?
From our obsession with serial killers to
violence in pop culture, we seem inescapably
drawn to the stories of monstrous acts and the
aberrant people who commit them. But evil, Dr.
Julia Shaw argues, is all relative, rooted in our
unique cultures.
With the Interlibrary Loan system back up and running, with some libraries
participating, the selection of books to access are diminished. The Pembroke Public
Library is continuing to provide this free service, however a free will donation would be
appreciated.
The Book Club is requesting if any members have copies of their selected books and
are willing to share with the Book Club members would be greatly appreciated.
Just drop the book(s) to the office with your name in it so that it may be returned to the
rightful owner. And thank you!

Centre’s member Blake N. asked Connie Daikens R.N. (leader of Wednesdays and Fridays Active
Fitness 50+ program and Chronic Disease Prevention and Management RN, Certified Diabetes
Educator West Champlain Family Health Team ) to write a one page summary about the benefits
of keeping active and fit. Listed are some of Connie’s favourite reasons to stay active. Thank
you!
It has been said that “if you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for
your illness.”
We all could use more time, right? The more time passes, the quicker it goes as well.
Staying active is one of the best ways to use your time efficiently and getting the most out of the
precious hours we have to accomplish our day to day activities.
There are numerous studies and statistics available showing the evidence and benefits of keeping
active, most notably dancing! Here are just a few of the known benefits:
Improves energy and strength
Decreases stress, anxiety and fatigue
Improves relaxation and sleep
Improves confidence and well-being
It’s fun! It’s social! It’s supportive!
Helps to maintain or lose weight
Lowers blood pressure, improves blood glucose
Stronger bones and muscles which helps prevent fractures
Improves balance to prevent falls
Improved quality of life.
Treats, slows or delays the risk of memory changes and keeps the brain healthy!
(resource: Diabetes Canada; https://medicalxpress.com/news/2017-08-reverse-aging-
brain.html)
In an article entitled “Dancing can reverse the signs of aging in the brain” by Frontiers and
featured on Medical Xpress, we read about a study out of Germany that looked at the benefits
of exercise in the elderly to determine what type of effect it can have on the brain:
Exercise has the beneficial effect of slowing down or even counteracting age-related decline in
mental and physical capacity,” says Dr Kathrin Rehfeld, lead author of the study, based at the
German center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Magdeburg, Germany. “In this study, we
show that two different types of physical exercise (dancing and endurance training) both
increase the area of the brain that declines with age. In comparison, it was only dancing that
lead to noticeable behavioral changes in terms of improved balance.”
So let’s keep moving, have fun and enjoy our “senior years” in the best shape of our lives!!

Motion is lotion! Exercise lubricates the joints by
encouraging fluid to circulate and also increases blood flow, which means more nutrients are being delivered to body
tissues, which aids in the healing process.
