Associate Director UpdateFor the last several months, we have unveiled the supports and opportunities that are the foundation of our program and should be experienced by all young people. The final one is skill building. Quality skill building activities provide challenging and engaging opportunities for young people. In 4-H, we focus specifically on the components of thriving – sparks, growth mindset, the GPS system of goal management, and self- reflection on the indicators of thriving. Have you heard of these components yet? Here is a summary:

• Sparks – An inner passion, interest or talent. A spark is also something that is used to make a positive difference in the world.

• Growth Mindset – People with a growth mindset see skills and abilities as things that can be improved through practice, effort, and persistence.

• Goal Management Skills – Goal management is the ability to effectively utilize goal setting skills to manage the process of reaching a goal or goals. In 4-H, we use the GPS system of goal management: G – Goal setting; P – Pursuit of Strategies; and S – Shifting Gears.

• Self-Reflection Skills – Dialogue and internal evaluation exercises help youth develop goals toward increasing indicators of thriving (6C’s: competence, confidence, caring, character, contribution, and connection).

I think you will agree that the California 4-H Youth Development Program encourages skill-building opportunities. However, we should be ever mindful that we need to be intentional in our planning and delivery to assure that these occur.

Here are five things you can do now to increase skill-building:

1. Help youth explore, develop, and discover their sparks. Begin by asking youth what they are interested in.

2. Encourage effort and persistence, and praise youth for their hard work instead of the outcome or product.

3. Use the GPS model of goal management. 4. Provide structured and unstructured opportunities for young

people to converse about goals and the 6C’s. 5. Read more about the components of thriving: http://

www.ca4h.org/About/Thrive/ • Keep your eyes and ears open for more ways to build youth skills

through the four components of thriving. There are many skills that young people build in 4-H and we are intentionally focusing on the thrive model to create common language, standards of program delivery, and to help youth grow in very specific and measurable qualities. Currently, youth members enrolled in 4-H Leadership Projects throughout the state are improving their 6C’s through these skill-building opportunities.

Online Record Book Training – Webinar Series for the 4hOnline Record Book

The 4-H Online Record Book (ORB) is a record keeping tool that helps 4-H members compile their annual 4-H Record Books. It also provides an arena for 4-H members to share their experiences with other members in their 4-H Club. A webinar series has been offered during this month of February to help 4-H staff, volunteers, and youth become familiar with the system. Provided below are links to recordings of all the trainings over. These trainings were facilitated by Scott Mautte and Steven Worker at the California State 4-H Office. The trainings offered are as follows:

Introduction and Logging-In

Paper vs. Electric: Navigating the Forms in the Online Record Book: PDR, APR, Story

Youth Functions, Forms, and Privacy Settings

Project & Club Leader Functions and Approving Forms

For a complete listing of Archived Webinar Recordings& Presentation Slides visit http://www.ca4h.org/Resources/Members/RecordBook/ORB/

Does your 4-H Club want a FREE personalized website?Over the past several months we have been renovating sb4h.org and are proud to present you with our improved website claiming several new features such as: easier navigation between pages, a media page featuring videos highlighting county events, and most recently, the ability for clubs to manage a personalized webpage hosted on sb4h.org that contains:

• Project Pages (a listing of all club projects, as well as individual pages for each project)• Calendar Capabilities (dates for the club & county level)• Newsletter Capabilities (allows club to host & distribute newsletter online)

This opportunity is for both 4-H members and parents/volunteers wanting to grow in their computer skills. As a club webmaster, one would be responsible for designing and managing aspects of their clubs website content. All that is required are basic web browsing skills, as the system our county uses is very easy and straightforward to operate. This is a powerful resource that can save time for leaders, parents, and members - simply by offering relevant club information such as meeting dates & times, project details, & club files - all at the click of a button. As social media and smart phones are becoming a larger part of our society, a website will allow your club to be accessible to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. This is a no cost/no hassle opportunity!

Interested? Simply follow these steps:1. Check in with your Community Leader & express interest. 2. E-mail Brian Sikich @ the SB County 4-H Office 3. Stay tuned for training opportunities!

Questions? E-mail Brian Sikich at the above link or call @ 805-284-4661

More and more users are accessing and using the 4-H Online Record Book!

Here are our latest statistics: 1022 club meetings registered, 3828 Developmental Activities have been entered, 168 Presentations added, 1063 Photos uploaded, 354 Comments were made, and 874 Promotions received.

We are currently in the process of creating a Statewide Team of youth and adults to help design and deliver practical, hands-on trainings of the ORB system. If you would like more information about this team or know of a youth who would be interested, please check out the position description at http://www.ca4h.org/files/134533.pdf.

Officer Forms - Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, Historian

SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) is a relatively new 4-H initiative, yet "science and technology" has been a part of 4-H since it was founded (think animal science, food preservation, and agricultural technology). You don’t need to be a scientist or an engineer to be an effective SET project leader or to incorporate science and engineering into your 4-H projects. A major role of the project leader is as a facilitator

– to support where the youth want to take the inquiry rather than teaching facts or leading them to a predetermined solution. The goal of SET activities and projects through non-formal education combined with hands-on, inquiry-based learning is to engage youth in improving their SET knowledge, skills, and abilities. While there are specific SET 4-H projects, it is possible to involve SET into any 4-H project. If you want to find out more about SET curriculum, receive practical advice about engaging youth in SET activities in an array of projects, or how to provide SET learning experiences within a positive youth development framework, please contact Kathy Foltz, the Santa Barbara County 4-H SET Key Leader ([email protected]). There is a variety of expertise and resources available. Watch for upcoming SET projects and events, such as the 4-H National Science Day. The SET committee is always looking for your input and suggestions about how to best serve 4-H, so feel free to contact us!
