The final weekend of London 2012 has arrived and we are here to say goodbye to an historic event, saluting the world’s largest mega sporting competition. Medals have been won and lost, world records achieved and new friends made along the way. A cultural festival like London 2012 lingers in the memory because it ends. Now is the time for the North West to celebrate how well we played.

The timely occurrence of the Guild Year in Olympic Year opened a window for London 2012 in the North West to join together with Preston Guild to create an environment where London 2012 fans, Preston Guilders, local residents and visitors can connect. Legacy Trust UK, Preston City Council and Arts Council England made that dream possible.

WE PLAY Expo concludes the four-year Cultural Olympiad, the London 2012 Games and Preston Guild 2012 and invites their legacies to grow. We hope you enjoy this unprecedented and once in a lifetime Olympic Guild event.

WE PLAY Expo is a global celebration of the play culture. Play transcends art and sport, engaging us in creativity and invention across all fields. Every human being is a great player. Through play we can all progress. The term WE PLAY is a call to arms and the North West’s message to the world at the end of these Games.

Inspired by the great World Fairs of the twentieth century, WE PLAY Expo dares to transcend unconventional contours and heights. Celebrated artists, digital inventors and young people push the boundaries of their craft, displaying their playful creations for London 2012 at a single site for the first time and for the end of the Games.

Designed to reveal the modernity and progressiveness of the cultural landscape in the North West, the WE PLAY Expo programme boasts many firsts, from new international collaborations and regional festivals to technological breakthroughs and cultural icons.

We have our very own Olympic Village in Miller Park. The three Cultural Olympiad programmes of Abandon Normal Devices, Blaze and Lakes Alive end their 2012 journey together here in Preston. The events of Blaze Festival, The Humble Market, Mobile Republic and On the Night Shift are markers of their creative endeavour over the four years of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Our programme includes the play inspired documentary film Why We Play by filmmaker Mike Todd and the two legacy exhibitions, Moments that Matter and Emoto which give the inside track on the 2012 Games. We are also proud to present Handprint 2012, a piece of art made out of the handprints of people in the North West who took part in London 2012 events.

WE PLAY Expo forms part of the North West’s cultural legacy programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and is funded by Legacy Trust UK an independent charity creating a lasting cultural legacy from the London 2012 Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity in communities across the UK.

WE PLAY Expo has responded to London 2012 being the digital Games, bringing you a series of new artworks which showcases digital invention in art.

The Abandon Normal Devices festival invites you to experience The Humble Market, a real time digital performance between Preston and Brazil, and Mobile Republic, a collection of five touring digital caravans with artists on board to entertain you with food, film and fascinating ideas. These works reflect the Abandon Normal Devices focus on artists experimenting, setting ambitious parameters and evolving artworks over time. Alongside these are Emoto, a pioneering data art sculpture display of the worldwide mood about London 2012 and Handprint 2012, a massive interactive projection made out of handprints on a bridge.

Take the digital trail through WE PLAY Expo and be inspired by digital inventors from across Europe, the UK and the North West. Log in to the #media2012 hub in Miller Park to contribute to the citizen newswire for the London 2012 Games.


In accordance with tradition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and reflecting the London 2012 focus on the youth of the world, WE PLAY Expo launches Blaze Festival, an explosive new festival of music, performance and urban art, featuring work from local and global artists across three stages.

Join the next generation of creative producers in a diverse and dynamic artistic programme with plenty of opportunities to join in, including master classes and workshops from some of the North West’s best urban athletes and artists and an ambitious participatory dance performance led by Geraldine Pilgrim.

BlAzE fEsTIvAl

Blaze Festival is programmed by a team of ambitious and creative young producers aged 16 to 21 from across the North West in a regional co-production between Blaze and Brighter Sound, supported by Preston Guild, commissioned by WE PLAY Expo. Blaze is a partnership project led by Lancashire County Council with Blackpool Council and Creative Lancashire and is funded by Legacy Trust UK and Arts Council England.

Saturday 8 September has an urban flavour with Estate Recordings, home to some of the UK’s hottest hip hop talent, presenting Skittles Live Band with live PA by Strategy from Broke ‘n’ £nglish. Throughout the day Spearfish present Urban Culture Jam including live demos and workshops in free running, skateboarding, graffiti art and urban dance, culminating in the premiere of The Chase, a performance devised by Infinite Flow Parkour with Company Fierce.

Sunday 9 September iconic Manchester Quartet Kid British head up the music line supported by Natives and The Colours. Bandstand Marathon brings together musicians from across the North West, featuring The Riot Jazz Brass Band and Blaze’s very own unique hip-hop/jazz collective the Boom Bike Big Band. In the Spiegeltent Geraldine Pilgrim presents a specially commissioned version of Handbag for Blaze Festival

and Villmore James brings boxing, music, dance and film together to present Punchline.

Throughout the weekend you can relax to chilled out beats and acoustic sets in the Blaze Lounge, which is also home to Blaze Bloggers who will be in conversation with artists and performers. You’ll also find visual art activities to inspire and delight, including ‘Sit and Knit’ and extraordinary hair art from Osadia. Plus Street Quest offers you the chance to take part in a new interactive street game around Preston and become a time traveler for the day.

On Sunday 9 September 2012, family, friends and community are invited to gather in Avenham Park for the North West’s very own Closing Ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Be amazed by On the Night Shift, a dazzling large scale show from French Pyrotechnic wizards, Les Commandos Percu and Lakes Alive. Featuring specially recruited UK dancers and drummers, live music, dance and furious, elemental rhythmic percussion, this event will mark the end of Preston Guild and the Cultural Olympiad programme in the North West. After the show, you can join in with the whole of the UK to see the official handover to 2016 Host City Rio de Janeiro, watch London 2012 extinguish the Paralympic Flame and listen to the final act of London 2012 which is Coldplay, broadcast live on big screens.

Through the lives of two young people - Gon and Tonkao - this interactive contemporary Thai musical play tells the story of how theatre has the power to inspire people.

This is a circus show with a difference. An exhilarating blend of high-octane, visual performance showcasing a deluge of circus skills including trick-cycling, tumbling, rope work and acrobalance, all engulfed in a reservoir of film and a myriad of colour.

A feast for the eyes, a jaw-dropping night of entertainment, this is Bipolar circus. Box of Frogs explores circus as a metaphor for emotional instability, inspired by Director Mish Weaver’s experience of bipolar disorder.

Three short films by North West filmmakers including: Leon Seth’s The Road to Success, the inspiring story of Steve Judge, who narrowly escaped death in a car accident and after a decade of painful operations and rehabilitation is now the Paratriathlon World Champion; Adam Tallon’s Remarkable, a poetic documentary on the existential lifestyle of a Liverpool based B-Boy Mark Jacob; and Soup Collective’s Portrait of an Athlete, two Vanuatuan Beach Volleyball players visit their host 2012 training camp in Cheshire as part of their acclimatisation process.

On the Night Shift is a dazzling combination of fireworks and percussion by French pyrotechnic wizards, Les Commandos Percu. Their shows perfectly blend musical rhythms and amazing effects, as fireworks dance to a thumping soundtrack. Join us on the final night of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the skies are set ablaze and the air is filled with rhythmic drumbeats in a stunning spectacular.

Watch some of the North West’s best free runners and skateboarders in their pursuit of the most daring and breath-taking moves choreographed by Darren Pritchard from Company Fierce. A show not to be missed, the players weave in and around a specially commissioned structure developed by internationally renowned graffiti artist Zedz. Shown alongside an exciting new video piece made by Huckleberry Films that explores the theme ‘The Chase’.

The Swimmer comes from We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay, depicting in stunning monochrome a nameless athlete powering through the waterways of Britain.

Why We Play is a new documentary by North West filmmaker Mike Todd which addresses the central question which gives the film its name: what do we mean by play? What meaning does it have in our lives? The film explores how sport and culture connect with the concept of play and how this connects with the region’s engagement with London 2012.

The film premiere on Friday will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.
