COTA WA
Jennette Ward
This morning Joanna had the pleasure of introducing the
Director of Strategic Projects and Policy of COTA WA
formally known as the Council of the Ageing WA. The
organisation advances the rights, interests and futures
of Australians as we age.
Jennette told us that for early 60 years COTA has been the
peak body representing and advocating on behalf of people
50 years+ on issues that impact on their lives. They work with
other organisations to deliver better services and outcomes
and deliver specific programs and services including:
* Living Longer Living Stronger – a strength and fitness
program currently in about 50 centres in metro and country
areas that focuses on the physiology of the 50+ age group . It has proven impact on arthritis, sleep disorders,
bone density, improved cardiovascular function, falls prevention, cognitive skills and much more.
* Mall Walking is a fun and fitness program and currently has 5 groups, including one at Belmont Forum, that
enjoy the benefits of a walk in the company of others in safety and indoors on the flat surfaces of their local
shopping centre and then enjoy a social coffee afterwards. One of its main benefits is that it helps to combat
social isolation for those a little less mobile.
*Cybercrime holds community based sessions that assist older people to use their computer and other devices
safely and with confidence that they are able to access their online accounts and avoid hacking and scams.
About 4,000 have attended the course over the past 15 months.
*Computer Classes which provides one-on-one literacy training.
* Mature aged employment has two pilot programs that deliver a Mature Aged Career Expo and a Business
Symposium. Jennette highlighted the issues of the aged looking for work when she told us while younger out of
work people take, on average, 13-20 weeks to find employment, those over 50 take about 71 weeks!
Of particular note is a new pilot project, part of a Try Test & Learn that hopes to deliver a benefit to both the
youth and aged of our community.
*Mentoring 2 Work is a 2 hour per week, 6-12 month program that uses mature volunteer mentors to help assist
young people at risk of long term welfare dependency to enter the workforce. Here Jennette highlighted that
employment today is based more on short term contracts than the secure long term employment that we may
have been used to. This program is funded by the Department of Social Services and will be delivered at multiple
locations throughout Perth to ensure easy access to those without the means to travel and link in with local
businesses.
We thank Jennette for her informative presentation and if you are interested in more information about COTA’s
programs and projects, check out their website http://www.cotawa.org.au/

SOCIAL EVENTS
Members enjoyed a social breakfast at the International on the Water Hotel in
Ascot last week. (Gren was there too but must have been paying the bill!)
What a great spot! Who even knew it was there?
Rotary Foundation Alumni
At the Annual Alumni Luncheon on Saturday, Christine caught up with past member of The Rotary Club of
Ascot, Rob Millard and his wife Linsey who was also on her GSE team exchange to Sweden in 1990. Rob
was on an exchange to WA the following year from Milwaukee, USA and met Linsey at Conference with
then District Governor Ken Collins who’s photographed with them. Rob and Linsey married some years
later and flittered between USA and Australia for a number of years before settling in Perth. Rob is still
teaching in the southern suburbs and sends his thoughts and best wishes to our Club and our members.

science at an eary age and microscopes are
emblazoned with the Rotary emblem.
25th Belmont & WA Small Business Awards
These awards are in recognition of the immense value that Small businesses contribute to the Western Australian economy and The Rotary Club of Ascot is sponsoring this year’s Achievement Award.
