fREqUEntLy ASkED qUEStIOnSCan I register online for day camp? Initial registration must be done at the Culver-Palms Family YMCA. Once you complete your initial registration, you can pay your balances for each camp week, online.

Are the registration packets available online? Yes! But, please note, our registration procedures have changed. At the time of registration, you only need to complete a registration card. After completing your registration card, you will be given a registration packet, which you will turn in when you drop your child off on their first day of camp. Registration cards are only available at the YMCA and not available online.

What is the difference between Palms and El Rincon? How do I know which camp is for me? The simple answer is that Palms and El Rincon are essentially the same program. Weekly, kids will engage in the exact same field trips and the exact same activities. The more complex answer is that El Rincon is only open in the summer for summer day camp. During the school year, the YMCA does not operate the El Rincon Site. Palms Site is open year-around, and provides Before and After School Care, and spring and winter break care. Because we operate Palms year around, it is a state licensed child care facility. El Rincon is only opened during the summer; therefore, the state allows us to run El Rincon as a licensed-exempt program. However, both programs are still sanctioned by the same policies, procedures and guidelines set forth by the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles.

Do you accept deposits for camp weeks? We sure do! You can place a $25 dollar deposit for each week of camp you desire to register for. Full payment is due two weeks prior to the start of each week. Deposits only hold your space in camp until the payment due date. Once the due date has passed, your reserved space and camp deposit will be forfeited; so please make sure you follow the payment due date schedule, which requires each camp week to be paid in full, two weeks prior to the start of that particular week. We will accept deposits for the weeks of 1–5 until May 13, 2013 and weeks 6–11 until June 17, 2013. We will accept checks as a form of payment until June 17, 2013.

Do you offer a multi-child discount? Unfortunately, we do not offer multi-child discounts. However, we do have a Financial Assistance Program, which offers assistance to families who otherwise could not afford the day camp fees.

What are the ages and/or grades for specialty camps? Each camp has a different age and grade requirement. Please see each camp for specific details.

Does my child have to attend every week? No. Camp is offered in weekly sessions. You may select whichever weeks you wish and there is no minimum or maximum amount of weeks you may register for.

Does the YMCA provide lunch and daily snack at Day Camp? Children are required to bring a sack lunch, water bottle, snacks and sun screen to day camp each day. Children are also required to wear closed-toed and closed-heel shoes. The YMCA will provide an afternoon snack every day for the Palms and El Rincon locations only. Children should bring their own afternoon snacks if they are attending a specialty day camp or Good Times camp.

When will the camp calendars/schedule be ready? The camp calendars/schedules will be available at Day Camp Kickoff Day on Saturday, March 9th.

How are the children grouped? Are all the ages placed together at Day Camp? Children are grouped by age. Day Camp groups consist of one counselor and 10 campers. At times, a C.I.T. may be placed in a camp group to assist the counselor. Please note that because our Palms Camp site is a licensed facility, at times, our ratio may be 1:12. But, please do not be concerned. This is below the state standard of 1:14 and Camp Directors are always available to assist groups that may have campers with a little more energy and that require extra supervision. For water and swimming trips, our ratio is one counselor for every 6 children.

Will the staff at summer day camp be full of teenagers and college students? The YMCA prides itself on finding the best staff possible. Our staff team members are trained in CPR and First Aid and are required to attend a 20 hour Day Camp orientation. Most of our staff possess college coursework in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Sociology, Recreation, Physical Education and Nutrition. Staff are also required to attend Child Abuse Prevention training and Positive Discipline training. Staff must also be 18 years or older at the time of employment.6

Page 7: WE LOVE SUMMER · Dates: July 6–13 Fee: Visit ycampsla.org for registration fees. camps and caravans, please contact Katie Laase at KatherineLaase@ymcala.org. DAy CAMP PROGRAM hOURS

Do you have to pay a registration fee for each day camp my child attends? No. You are only required to pay one $50 registration fee, which covers all our summer day camp, god times camp, and specialty camp programs for the summer of 2013. The camp registration fee does not cover any Resident Camp programs.

How do I apply for financial assistance? Summer Camp financial assistance application will be available March 1, 2013. Make sure you get your applications in early. Please note, if you are applying for financial assistance, you cannot register until after your application has been processed and approved. If you register before you receive an award letter (via mail), the registrar cannot go back and adjust your camp rate. For more details about our Day Camp programs, please request a copy of our 2013 Summer Day Camp Parent Handbook!

SWIM tEStInGThe YMCA classifies children as “swimmers” or “non-swimmers” for our summer day camp programs. The YMCA will no longer provide swim testing during summer day camp. All swim testing will be conducted prior to the start of camp. We will also offer one additional swim testing date mid-summer. Parents will need to bring their children to the YMCA during one of our swim testing dates to have their children tested for the deep end. Swim testing is only required if you would like for your child to swim in the deep end of the pool. The YMCA defines “deep end” as the level of water in the pool that, once you child has their feet planted on the bottom of the pool, reaches above your child’s armpits. The “deep end” is based upon the height of a child and not necessary defined by the depth of the swimming pool. In order for a child to swim in water that rises above their armpits, they must be swim tested. If you prefer for your child to remain in the “shallow end” a swim test is not required.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles defines swim testing as follows: Children are to be tested by the Lifeguard as to ability before attending an aquatics venue for the summer. A child classified as a swimmer must be able to swim a distance of 75 feet without touching the bottom or side of a pool and tread water for one (1) minute. If a child is not tested, they are to be classified as a non swimmer; if child is classified as non-swimmer, swim test is not needed. The results of the swim test must be recorded on the “Swim Test Results Form”. The site supervisor must have this form on every child listed as a swimmer while at an aquatic venue.

The swim test results will be given to each camp director so that they are aware of who is classified as a swimmer. All other children not on the list will be classified, by default, as non-swimmer.
