OUR APPROACH TO

CLEAN WATER

Carbon dioxide is consumed by the algae.

Harvested algae, rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, is pelletized.

Algae pellets used as fertilizer or bioplastics.

Oxygen is generated by the algae.

Algae on rotating belt surface removes

nitrogen and phosphorus.

Gross-Wen Technologies uses its patented wastewater treatment technology, known as the revolving algal biofilm (RABTM) system, to cost-effectively meet new wastewater discharge permits. Our system uses algae to recover nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Compared to other treatment options, our system is significantly more affordable and produces algae biomass which can be sold as slow-release algal fertilizer or bioplastics. Overall the process has a low carbon footprint, making it the most sustainable approach to treat wastewater.

Secondary Treatment with Nutrient RemovalThe RABTM system is well suited to be located after primary sedimentation when Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Ammonia (NH3), Total Nitrogen (TN), and/or Total Phosphorus (TP) treatment are needed. When the BOD concentration is higher, the RABTM system will grow a mixed culture of both bacteria and algae, which can simultaneously remove BOD, NH3, TN and TP.

Side-Stream TreatmentSide-Streams at wastewater treatment plants, such as anaerobic digestion effluent and sludge thickening effluent, typically are circulated back to the front-end of the plant. This waste stream is typically very nutrient dense with relatively low flows (compared to the rest of the plant). Side streams have nutrient concentrations ideal for algal growth and our RABTM system.

Tertiary TreatmentThe RABTM system can be a simple retrofit on the back-end of an existing wastewater treatment plant for polishing TN and TP to meet stricter effluent discharge limits. This allows plants to keep their existing infrastructure, preventing costly upgrades to the entire plant.
