H- Bomb
• A thermonuclear weapon that uses heat after atom fission to set off a nuclear fusion blast.
• Was first developed in 1951 by Stainslaw Ulam for the United States.
• Was first tested in 1952 • Tested to be 450 times more powerful than the
bomb dropped on Nagasaki In WWII • Nuclear Bombs like the H-Bomb have been used
by countries to threaten other countries ever since.
Rock Around The Clock
• Written in 1952 by James E Myers
• Most successful rendition is by Billy Haley and his comets in 1954
• While not being the first rock and roll song, It was the rock and roll song that brought rock and roll into the mainstream culture.
• The song achieved #1 singles on both the US and UK charts at the time.
Sputnik
• The first artificial earth satellite • Launched by the Russians in 1957 • The launching of the sputnik was a major point in
the Space Race, where many countries were trying to do “firsts” in space.
• The sputnik stayed in orbit for 3 months before falling back into the earth’s orbit.
• The sputnik transmitted radio signals that amateur radio operators all over the world could pick up.
Buddy Holly
• American pioneer of rock and roll. • He started out playing bluegrass as a school child,
but after seeing Elvis play, and opening for Billy Haley and His Comets, he began to adopt rock and roll.
• Had two recording contracts at the same time and released songs with his band titled as “The Crickets” and as Buddy Holly.
• He wanted to record in New York but his band mates wanted to go back home, so the band slit up and Holly went to New York.
• He made a back up band of people he had found in New York and called them “The Crickets” as well.
• He was playing in a tour across the Midwest when a plane that he was using to travel between shows crashed in a snow storm, killing Holly, the pilot, as well as the newly formed “The Crickets”
• His death was on February 3rd, 1959.
Psycho
• A 1960 Horror movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by Joseph Stefano
• Adapted from the 1959 book of the same title, written by Robert Bloch
• The movie is regarded as one of the best movies of all time by critics and film scholars.
• The plot involves a woman who steals
money from her employer and then splits town.
• The woman stays at a Motel over night where she is murdered.
• The Investigator is also murdered.
• This caused this film to be criticized for showing too much violence and sexuality.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
• A failed attempt to invade Cuba by America
• Lasted three days from April 17th to April 19th, 1961
• This was brought forth by Cuba’s new prime minister, Fidel Castro, siding with the USSR.
• America was involved with he USSR
In the cold war.
• America’s failure helped for other countries to Realize that the United States could indeed fail.
Moonshot
• Apollo 11 moon mission. • Was the space flight that landed the first men on the
moon. • Launched on July 16th, 1969 • Landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969 • First step took place on July 21st, 1969 • America wanted to get to the moon before Russia. In
the space race • Not much was known about the moon and the
procedure was carried out with great caution. • They brought back 50 pounds of moon rocks
Water-Gate
• A scandal involving Richard Nixon • Nixon and his Committees had done Illegal things during his presidency, and they tried to cover these things up. • However the president had a tape recorder in his office and their conversations were recorded. • Government officials demanded to see the tapes
and the president complied. • Nixon Resigned on August 9th, 1974 because of
his fear of being impeached.
Punk Rock
• Term was beginning to be used in
the early 70’s by music critics
• By 1976, Bands like The Clash,
The Sex Pistols, and The Ramones
had popularized this type of music.
• Popular in the US, Britain, and
Australia.
• Most Popular in Britain.
Heavy Metal Suicide
• In the 1980’s heavy metal was gaining popularity. • Common themes in heavy metal music were
darkness and death. • Parents blamed the cause of suicide on the fact
that their kids were listening to bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden.
• They tried to say that they had hidden messages in their songs promoting suicide, like the term “do it”.
• Bands couldn’t be made to stop because of the 1st amendment, Freedom of Speech.
