l Gifts bring touch of home to Beaudesert Hospital patients

Beautiful homemade patchwork quilts and lap covers are bringing a personal touch to the clinical environment of Beaudesert Hospital and giving patients the feeling of home.

Nursing and Midwifery Director Jacquie Smith said it was a wonderful surprise to be approached by a local ladies quilting group who offered to make the beautiful patchwork bed covers for palliative care beds.

“Following discussion with hospital staff ideas flowed to also making lap covers to provide dignity to patients being pushed around in wheelchairs,” Jacquie said.

“We are able to give these to patients to take home when they leave hospital and one of our patients was so grateful she told her son during a visit who then inadvertently passed on the story at a local café and to the very volunteer who had made some of the lap covers.

“She found herself listening to him tell his story about what that lap cover meant to his mum in hospital.

“The lady did not say anything but smiled as she had so much warmth and satisfaction from hearing her group had made a difference to someone.”

Beaudesert Hospital patient Joanne Smith said it meant a lot that members of the local community cared so much to take the time to create such special gifts for those spending time away from their families in hospital.

“They help make it feel more like home,” she said.Featured: Joanne Smith with RN Kirsty Baldwin.

MORNING TEA FOR

SethTHURS JUNE 15 10AM STAFF DINING ROOM

LOGAN HOSPITAL

3C/CCU nurse Seth Hargreaves focussed on

Much loved 3c/CCU nurse Seth Hargreaves’ life and that of his beautiful young family has changed forever. After Seth sought the advice of his GP after suffering pain in his left wrist, an MRI scan soon revealed a large spinal cancer encroaching on his spinal cord.

After 8 hours in the operating theatre at the PAH, one of the surgery’s real risks; paraplegia, had been cruelly realised.

Seth has recently been transferred to the spinal injury unit for rehab putting him a little bit closer to getting back home to his wife and fellow nurse Carla, and his adoring children Lilly and twins Edward and Henry.

With modifications required to their home before Seth can return in a wheelchair, his colleagues in the Emergency Department and 3c/CCU have rallied to help raise much needed funds to help one of our own.

To show your support, head to the Staff Dining Room on Thursday and enjoy morning tea for Seth.

Stomal Therapy have training

The first of two Stomal Therapy Workshops was pouched – I mean couched – at Logan Hospital in May as part of a continuing professional education initiative from the amazing team in Stomal Therapy and Wound Management.Clinical Nurse Consultant, Leeanne Johnson said the highlight of the session is the presentation and lived-experience of a previous patient.

“Stomal Therapy is a niche specialty, with 40 stomal therapy nurses across Queensland practising wound, stomal and continence care for a diverse range of patients,” she said.

“The workshop, which is open to all clinicians with an interest, provides an overview of bowel surgeries, pharmacy, nutrition, pouching and accessories and the whole patient journey from pre-op to discharge and follow-up.

Meet the team of five specially

qualified nurses which includes

Community VoicesDid you know our facilities receive fantastic feedback each and every week? Here are more recent examples

sent to Logan and Beaudesert hospitals.

My dear father was transported to the Logan Hospital via Queensland Ambulance Service. Sadly he lost his battle and passed away.

Although initially it seemed to take an extended period of time before dad was assessed in the emergency department, I really have to commend the Logan Hospital staff on their dedication; empathy; communication and compassion.

Most of the nursing and medical staff went above and beyond and this certainly did not go unnoticed by my siblings and myself. Communication was superb between the treating teams as was ‘keeping us in the loop’. We were consulted during every step and were and remain very appreciative for their consideration. I am a clinical nurse (currently job sharing as a Clinical Nurse Consultant) with another hospital health service and as you would be aware, there could be no harsher critic than someone in the same field.

Although the outcome for us was far from favourable and I feel raw from the pain, I feel I need to take this time to congratulate you on the wonderful work you do. All too often, people are quick to complain, but taking the time to show appreciation is rare. So again, I thank you all for doing a great job and being there when we needed you most. Well done!!!

In appreciation, JS

To all the amazing midwives and doctors at Beaudesert. We would like to thank you for all the wonderful support and assistance throughout our journey of bringing little E into this world.

We could not have done it without each and every one of you.

Much love and kind regards. B, M & E
