Flood Mitigation Methods Flood Consequences are affected by:-

TFS SOLUTION CHOSEN TO COMPLETE THE SCHEMES MISSING LINK

• The scheme for Pershore comprises two phases, phase one to protect two properties and the footpath between them and phase two the main clay core earth bund to protect the rest of this part of the town.

• The EA’s dilemma was how to provide the permanent protection to the two properties, one of which is listed.• TFS ‘s complete solution was chosen to provide the missing link and to satisfy the conservation Architect and property

owners needs providing a robust overall solution.

TFS COMPLETES PHASE ONE AHEAD OF PROGRAMME

• The contract to protect the two properties in Bridge Street was placed in March 2010, commenced early April and was completed early May a week ahead of programme. The Toll House is Grade 2 Listed.

• Phase two commenced as planned and abuts phase one providing permanent protection to this part of Pershore.

• The Floods in Carlisle in January 2005 devastated large areas of this important town. Flood defence plans were accelerated to provide a greater level of protection than originally proposed.

• A defence wall was designed but light and access was needed for the windows so TFS were chosen to design a bespoke version of their retractable barriers to provide the barriers to these sections of the wall.

• The barrier widths ranged from 2.4m to 3.6m and were designed so that one person could deploy them.

• The cover plates were designed in sections so that each one was less than 25kg in weight and the mechanism and pull rods enable simple deployment.

• The barriers were manufactured in our factory in Pontarddulais, transported to site and craned into position and fixed by our own staff.

• Volker Stevin then concreted the barriers into position and TFS commissioned the system.

Properties Flood four times in ten years at cost of some £300,000 to insurers

• TFS were called in by Aviva Insurance who paid for a full flood risk survey on behalf of the client of one of the Cottages as they were considering ceasing insurance on their insured.

• The report concluded that all three properties needed protection due to the porous walls between the properties.• A design was developed which aimed at alleviating the flood problem of all three properties from the Coombe Stream • After several years of negotiation with neighbours, the EA and LA a solutions was approved and contributions agreed.

• The solution comprised a veneer walling system taken down to the clay layer of the stream bed and up to the 1:100 + CC flood height, raising the yard walls, sumps an pumps in the floor and yards, NRV’s and door barriers

• The project was completed in six weeks after all legal's and approvals were obtained between the parties.


• Specialist contractor appointed in November for the flood alleviation work on Substation and Grid Relay Room in Carlisle in Carlisle after floods in January 2005.

• A detailed Survey revealed that the flood depth in January 2005 was 830mm, after extensive tender process TFS were chosen from the 12 options / contractors considered by the client.

• The project was ‘fast tracked’ as the client wanted completion by mid December before the first anniversary of the recent flood.

• The project was completed on time within budget and to the required standards.

• Utility Client had a number of sites with Marshalling Kiosks (MK) which are on significantly vulnerable sites and needed a cost effective solution to protect them.

• A bespoke system was developed and fully

tested at the companies own test facilities to provide protection from a variety of flash, coastal or fluvial flooding

• The system is based on our tried and tested flood alleviation systems which have been proven in a variety of actual floods.

• Installations have been completed and further

bespoke solutions have been developed for other types of vulnerable utility equipment in other sectors.

• TFS has successfully undertaken Major Projects for significant commercial clients to alleviate flood risk on their sites. These include a £750k project in Tamworth, £650k project in Nottingham £540k project in Rochdale an £800k project in Northampton.

• We are currently involved in a major project

of over £1.5m for Anglian Water to protect a number of their vulnerable sites.

• All systems are fully tested at the companies own test facilities to provide protection from a variety of flash, coastal or fluvial flooding

• The systems are our tried and tested flood alleviation systems which have been proven in a variety of actual flood events.

Case study 3 Major Projects


• Utility Client with a large site with 33kVa and 132kVa assets which had flooded from surface water twice in two years to a depth of 620mm.

• Following a ‘near miss’ in November 2009 which TFS undertook temporary protection work, they decided in December to undertake an asset based flood alleviation solution which they required completing by March 2010.

• A bespoke solution was designed and

implemented commencing on site on 11th Jan 2010 and was completed on 26th March 2010.

• To meet the program we had two teams on the site who worked on a seven day week basis with every fourth weekend off.

• The project was delivered within budget and program.

Case study 4 Rochdale


• Utility Client with a very large site with 132kVa assets which had flooded from fluvial flood water twice in ten years to a depth of 540mm.

• As part of their ‘Flood Alleviation Programme’ requirements by OFGEM, TFS were appointed following a competitive tender bid award in May 2011 for their East West and Central Midlands assets

• A bespoke solution was designed and implemented commencing on site on 1st August 2011, the substation building, four transformer and 18 separate asset protection was completed on 26th October 2011.

• To meet the program we had one team on the site who worked on a seven day week basis with every fourth weekend off

• The project was delivered within budget and program.

• Utility Client with a number of 33kVa and 132kVa assets which are at significant risk from fluvial, pluvial and coastal flooding.

• As part of their ‘Flood Alleviation Programme’ and the requirements by OFGEM, TFS were appointed following a competitive tender bid award in October 2011 for their Scottish assets

• A range of bespoke solutions have been designed and implemented commencing on site on 5th January 2012, the substation building, two transformer and 4 separate asset protection was completed on in April 2012.

• A further 8 projects were awarded and another 8 are in the pipeline with further sites awaiting surveys

• The projects have to date been delivered within budget and program.
