Having just passed the seventh week that we have been isolated at home we might seem to think that we will never return to normal. When that is so true there will be a time

when we will come together again and perhaps remember the essential lessons that we learned from this time. One of the important lessons that I have learned is to appreciate the newness of each day. In isolation the reality of life seems to be that we wake, eat, read or find something to keep us busy, eat, again find some past time, eat, and perhaps watch some tv and then sleep. There has been some quality time for prayer as well. The routine of our every day lives seems to present a different attitude. Think of the times that you woke to dread entering the many tasks at hand. I don’t think we will dread routine again. I also have learned that there needs to be time in our day to reach out and appreciate each other through simple gestures of concern. There has also been a deepening appreciation for those who work on front lines and in essential lines of work. I do hope that we will not fall back into the mentality of taking for granted those who work so diligently for our well being. I really hope that we will never take for granted a friendly hello or a handshake or a hug. The absence of physical closeness has been detrimental to our well being. So let’s pray that we will grow from this time and learn the life’s lessons that we might have taken for granted for a long time.

Please appreciate the prayerful consecration that our Bishop has made to Our Lady of our Diocese. The Bishops of Canada have made this consecration under the advisement of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. As we continue to navigate through these unprecedented days, we have been invited to join the Bishops of Canada and a number of Episcopal Councils throughout the world to consecrate the Diocese of London to Mary, Mother of the Church on May 1, 2020. On the first day of the month traditionally devoted to honouring our Blessed Mother, we will call out to her and seek her maternal protection during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

We are invited as a parish communities to join spiritually in the reconsecrating of the Diocese of London on Friday, May 1, 2020 to the Blessed Virgin Mary in response to the pandemic, entrusting our needs once again to her intercession.

There is a movement being organized called May 16 Miracle. There is a massive organizational effort taking place right now, with daily ZOOM meetings at the CK level and also in smaller committees at each of the smaller communities (like Dresden, Blenheim, etc.)

They are mapping out and dividing up the whole of the municipality into collection zones, and organizing teams, equipped with appropriate COVID-19 precautions, that will take pick up trucks around to pick up the goods based on a neighbourhood team approach. The teams will deliver the collected items to

a central location. . . where the set up will again be consistent with COVID restrictions. We will be asked on that Saturday (May 16) to place on our front porches non perishable food stuffs and they will be collected and then distributed to the needy.

One things that the horrific crimes that happened in Nova Scotia two weeks ago has shown us is never to take life for granted. We stand together as a nation in sorrow but hopeful that we will do better.

What are your priests doing during the pandemic? One of the many things that we are doing in ministry is officiating at the internment of our parishioners. We are not able to have celebrations of funerals during this time but we do assist immediate family members with the burial of their loved one. When the restrictions have been lifted and we are able to gather again we will have Memorial Celebrations.

Some people have asked why are we videoing the Masses at only three of our five churches. The easy answer to that is there is only internet capabilities at three of our five churches and the equipment that we are using belongs to Father Peter. We will rotate the celebrations at the three churches in the coming weeks.

Be safe and stay home.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Called to be shepherds

Reading I Acts 2: 14, 36-41 (Peter’s discourse) Reading II 1 Peter 2: 20-25

(for the slave) Gospel John 10: 1-10 (The Good Shepherd)

Key Passage: (The shepherd) goes ahead of them, and sheep follow him because they know his voice. (John 10:4)

Adult: How are you a shepherd to those in your care?

Child: What will you do this week to show you love those around you?

MASS VIA PHONE

We realize that some members of our parish family do not have the internet and therefore cannot watch Mass or pray the Rosary on line. Good news! We just found out from one of our parishioners that you can listen to Mass or pray the

Rosary from St. George Parish in London by calling 1-226-781-7977 and following the prompts. Don’t worry, we tried it and it works!

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ©LPi ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE ~ May 3, 2020 ~Fourth Sunday of Easter

With whom do we converse and listen to the most? Believe it or not, the answer is ourselves. We are constantly having conversations with ourselves, and sometimes we even get caught! Our inner conversations reveal the truth about ourselves. We really cannot hide from ourselves, although we often pretend we can. By conversing with ourselves, we find solutions to our challenges, problem solve, work through our relationships, formulate opinions, run through dress rehearsals of possible conversations, and wrestle with and determine our system of priorities and values. What other voices affect the conversations we have with ourselves? Often, voices from our past continue to haunt us. These voices cause us to mistrust our judgment, harbor anger, and cling to our fears of rejection, failure, being wrong, and the like. It is in these inner conversations that we face what holds us captive — our limitations, weaknesses, sinfulness, and stubborn ego preoccupations. We often go about our lives putting out one fire or another, keeping ourselves preoccupied and busy, and trying to stay on top of things. Intentionally or unintentionally, we find ourselves wandering off. We turn around and can no longer see our home. We look down at our feet and realize we have lost our anchor. Feeling scared, out of place, desolate, unsettled, and lonely, we realize that we are lost. We listened to the wrong voices! In the midst of everything competing for our attention, the voice of the One who could truly call us home got muffled. We didn’t hear it. As our inner dialogues continue to play out, the one voice we need to consult — even before our own — is God’s. He is the Good Shepherd who can keep us safely where we need to be. As we graze through the stuff of our lives, we must constantly remember to look up, be attentive, and stay focused. Our habits of prayer are the only thing that can properly root us and keep us grounded. Contemplating God’s presence and developing an inner awareness of love incarnate, we will then find ourselves praying unceasingly as the days and nights and the ebbs and flows of our of lives unfold. Suddenly, the inner conversations we are constantly having are no longer just with ourselves or with voices that can lead us astray but with the Trinity, who desperately wants us to stay home.

ST. ANTHONY’S DAY CELEBRATION Sunday, June 14, 2020

It is with profound sadness that after 63 years our annual celebration for the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua is postponed due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. It is postponed until we can safely come together, once again, to celebrate our faith and our Czech heritage. The feast day of St. Anthony is June 13th and we are asking that you say a prayer.

"Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak."

~ St. Anthony of Padua

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER We know that this is difficult for many of you not to be able to attend Sunday Mass but as we have indicated in the past while that there is a rich tradition of praying the Spiritual Communion prayer that deepens our appreciation of the Sacrament.

My Jesus, I believe You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You avocet all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Today the Holy Father has asked all Catholics to intercede for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life>

♦ Pray for all priests (both living and dead) who

have ministered to you througout your life. ♦ Keep our parish priests and deacons in prayer

throughout the week ♦ Encourage your children or grandchildren to

consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister

♦ Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call

HOW TO DONATE As we are all forced to slow down in our current world, unfortunately some things continue along, such as our household bills and expenses. The same goes for our parishes as well, that operate mainly on donations received at Mass. If you normally donate with your offertory envelope when you attend Mass, there are some other options.

E-TRANSFER Using your online banking website or app, add the parish you wish to donate to using the parish email address: Blessed Sacrament – [email protected] Our Lady of Victory – [email protected] St. Agnes – [email protected] St. Joseph – [email protected] St. Ursula – [email protected]

Create the e-transfer and in the comment/note area, please indicate your envelope number or your address and which fund you are donating to, such as Sunday Offertory, Easter, Building, Share Lent etc.

No password is needed as the parishes are set up for autodeposit.

CHEQUE If you do not use online banking, you can mail a cheque to the office. Please make your cheque payable to the particular parish and on the memo line, indicate which fund you are donating to. Please mail it to:

St. Agnes Parish 52 Croydon St. Chatham ON N7L 1L3 Attention: “Name of parish you are donating to”

PAD (Pre-Authorized Debit) If you wish to set up PAD, you won’t have to worry about remembering to bring your envelope to Mass or be concerned that you can’t donate because you can’t attend Mass, such as our current situation.

There is a form available on the website (www.ccfp.dol.ca/how-to-donate or click Giving/How to Donate on the top menu). You can print off the form and fill it out and either scan the form and a void cheque and email it (using the email addresses above), or mail the form and void cheque to the office (using the address indicated above). Please note for this method, the form must be received before the 15th of the month in order to take effect the next month.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS PRAYER FOR SEMINARIANS

Father, thank you for the generosity of our seminarians. Safeguard them as they

prepare for priesthood.

Keep all evil far from them, so they may become strong Christian men who are

faithful to prayer, diligent in their studies, open to spiritual direction, and docile to all aspects

of seminary formation.

Above all, enflame their hearts with love so they will be ardent and gentle shepherds of Your church.

We make this prayer through the great High Priest. Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

St. Charles Borromeo, Patron saint of seminarians,

Pray for us!

RECOGNIZING THE VOICE OF JESUS —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

When my wireless provider introduced HD Voice, the voice I heard on my phone was unbelievably clear, and it felt at times like both the caller and I were in the same room. The best aspect of this feature is that it didn’t cost the customer any additional fees, and it didn’t require any changes to the phone. I could say it was free, but I suspect I was already paying for it in my monthly bill anyway. At least it felt free. The clearer the voice calling you, the easier it is to recognize who it is on the other end of the line. In John’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of the gatekeeper who opens the gate and calls for his sheep. They respond because they know his voice. Others try to lure the sheep when the gatekeeper is not there, but the sheep find their voices unclear or unfamiliar. Jesus is our gatekeeper. But unlike receiving something for free from a wireless company, to be able to hear his voice we need to pay attention and practice listening. By developing a stewardship way of life that is mindful and prayerful, we become attuned to his voice and are able to discern when the call is from our Lord and when it is from an imposter. It is great to talk about all the things we can do and all the gifts we can share, but if we are not listening for his call to hear where our offerings are needed, we can end up like a lost sheep searching for the gatekeeper.

CHURCH CHUCKLE

A grandfather was walking through his yard when he heard his granddaughter repeating the alphabet in a tone of voice that sounded like prayer. He asked her what she was doing. The

little girl said: “I’m praying, but can’t think of exactly the right words, so I’m just saying all the letters, and God will put them together for me because He knows what I am thinking.”
