We are pleased to share with you the Mercer University Library 2016-2017 Year in Review. What an exciting year this has been! In the summer of 2016, the library faculty and staff came together as one University Library with a unified mission of serving Mercer University through teamwork, creativity, and commitment. Our shared vision and values shape our work as an integral part of the academic success of our students and the research agenda of the University.
I have a sign in my office that reads, “It’s not about information or about technology. It’s about what people do with it.” That’s what we are all about—helping Mercerians use our resources, collections, computers, spaces, services, and hopefully contributing to their academic and personal growth. This is how we help Mercerians change the world. This is who we are. We bring creativity, commitment, and energy to everything we do and continually look ahead to the next big idea or opportunity. We are grateful for the support of our donors and friends who make our work possible.
Please read on about the exciting work we did this year and how we deliver exceptional library services for Mercer University.
Sincerely,
Beth HammondDean of the University Library

JACK TARVER BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONMarch 2, 2017, marked the 100th birthday of Jack Tarver and with it the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of this accomplished Mercerian and namesake of the Macon campus library. The Jack Tarver Library hosted a birthday party on March 2. On March 13, the Library partnered with Mercer’s Center for Collaborative Journalism to assemble a national panel of education journalists for a public forum on school integration. Nikole Hannah Jones, investigative journalist for the New York Times Magazine, was the keynote speaker. We find this program a fitting tribute to Mr. Tarver’s legacy of high standards and bold journalism covering difficult issues with integrity. During his days with the Atlanta newspapers, Mr. Tarver was instrumental in supporting Ralph McGill’s Pulitzer-winning fight against segregation.

The University Library played an integral role in my undergraduate success. The variety of spaces to study, resources to utilize, and staff with answers to my questions made it a place where my studying could be its most productive. I am so thankful that I was able to have a place where I could go to study and my time would be truly maximized because everything I needed was in one place.EMILY “MILLIE” SMITH, ’17, | SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT, AND 1ST YEAR STUDENT AT MERCER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
In 2016, the faculty and staff of the University Library thoughtfully considered ways to solidify the Library into a unified organization with a new shared vision, mission, and values. One year later, we reflect on what we have accomplished in serving Mercer University.
The reorganization of the Library into a cross-campus, team approach has brought librarians and staff together in their functional areas. Throughout the year, there have been new collaborations and initiatives that utilized partnerships, shared decision making, and new ways to serve the University better. We welcomed new members of the library community to help us support all Mercerians to achieve academic and professional success. This “One Mercer, One Library” culture was validated by officially changing the name from University Libraries to University Library in early 2017.
The Library remains the primary provider of quality information resources, enhancing our strong print collections with a vast array of electronic books, journals, streaming audio and video, digitized archival collections, and more. We share print collections across Mercer’s campuses and deliver e-resources to the Mercer community wherever it is. We also serve as the most popular gathering spots, not only for our strong services and assistance, but for the spaces and amenities we provide: individual and group study spaces, social spaces, computers and print services, 24-hour study rooms, and café to get a hot cup of coffee, meal or snack.
Every day we see the results of working with students on projects, in helping faculty with their scholarship and in serving as a preferred campus location. Together, we celebrate our success and embrace new opportunities to create our future. We are proud of our leadership role in creating a successful cross-University academic support service unit and showing how we can transcend geography to create and deliver superior library services wherever our patrons may be—on campus, at home, across the country, or overseas—through personal service and the ability to deliver almost 1 million electronic resources to Mercerians’ computers or mobile devices. Wherever they are, we are, too.
Looking ahead, we see great things coming in the coming year, including a complete refurbishment of furnishings, computer area, and study spaces on the main entry floor of the Tarver Library and the opening of a major new study space in Swilley Library. We are excited about our work together to build a University Library in partnership with the goals and vision of Mercer University. The Library

One YEAR Later Highlights OF THE Year
HOLMES GIFTInspired by his collegiate study and faculty mentors, Dr. Y. Lynn Holmes, CLA ’62, has been collecting ancient artifacts for more than 50 years. Over his long career as a teacher, scholar, and traveler, he acquired a significant collection of approximately 1,000 items, including coins, artwork, household items, religious objects, weapons, and jewelry. It has always been his wish to pass on his love of the Ancient Near East to Mercer so that it can be a resource for people in the Middle Georgia area. In 2008, Dr. Holmes entered into an agreement with Mercer University and the Jack Tarver Library to house his collection at a future date and to begin featuring items from his collection through exhibits and events. Five exhibits have been created to date.
In 2016, Dr. Holmes donated the bulk of his collection to the Jack Tarver Library. The items have been cataloged and organized into a database, searchable by anyone through URSA, the Library
Depository through this link: libraries.mercer.edu/ursa/handle/10898/3790.
This collection, which is unlike anything else at Mercer or in the Middle Georgia community, has already attracted interest from Mercer faculty members to use artifacts in their classes. We are very grateful to Dr. Holmes and his wife, Elizabeth, for their generosity and we look forward to many opportunities to share his love of archaeology and the Near East through exhibits, classes, and events.
Located on the upper floor of the Capricorn Recording Studios at 548 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Macon is a 1970s-era mural that is approximately 12’ tall and 50’ long. There is a matching mural of similar scale painted on the exterior brick on the back of the building. Both geometric-themed murals were painted by the same artist, Michael Pierce, and recently restored by Tarver Library archivist Kathryn Wright.
“ I think the most beneficial aspect of Tarver Library for me has been the personal assistance I have received from different library employees over my four years at Mercer. Most recently, I remember working on my senior research on intergenerational perceptions of race relations in South Africa and coming to a standstill when I had no idea where I could find sources on my topic. I walked up to the Ask Jack desk and was immediately given personal assistance on how to better focus my search. I also won’t forget my long nights spent in Tarver’s 24-hour study rooms!
