From Fr. Joe It is not often that we get to celebrate The

Presentation of the Lord on a Sunday. This feast is

celebrated 40 days after Christmas, so it always

falls on February 2nd, which this year is a Sunday.

The Holy Family — Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, a

faithful Jewish family — would have done what

was prescribed according to the law of Moses,

as we hear in this Sunday’s gospel (Luke 2:22-40).

In this gospel, Jesus is again being revealed to

the world, this time through the words of an old

man (Simeon) and an old woman (Anna) as

being “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and

glory for your people Israel.” (2:32) Since this

Sunday’s Gospel is part of Luke’s infancy

narrative, years ago this feast traditionally

marked the end of the Christmas season. (So

much for those who think celebrating the

Christmas season up through the Baptism of the

Lord is long.)

Jesus’ coming into our world – his revelation to

the world – is often associated with “light” [see

the above scripture reference, or last Sunday’s

1st Reading (Isaiah 9:1) and Gospel (Matt 4:16):

“the people who sit in darkness have seen a

great light, on those dwelling in a land

overshadowed by death light has arisen.”]

Besides providing illumination before there were

electric lights, the light of candles (especially the

large Paschal/Easter Candle) also represents the

light of Christ and that Christ is the light of the

world. Some of you may remember when this

feast day was also called Candlemas Day, when

candles were blessed, either for use in church or

to be brought home. Some of you may have

brought candles to Mass this weekend to be

blessed for use in your homes; I hope those times

when you use them are blessed moments (a

quiet dinner alone, with your spouse, family,

maybe a bigger celebration; or, maybe even in

a special prayer space you have set aside at

home). May that burning candle remind you of

the light and warmth of Jesus’ presence in your

life.

Next Sunday (5th Sunday in Ordinary Time),

we will hear Jesus tell his disciples: “You are the

light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14) Just as

candles can be signs of Christ’s light and warmth

in our lives, Jesus relies on us to be his light and

warmth in the lives of those we meet — yes, our

loved ones, but even for strangers. For some

people, the light you are may be the only bright

moment of their day. Let Christ’s light shine

through you.

From Fr. Joe (Continued) (Continued from page 2)

This Monday, February 3rd, is the memorial of

St. Blaise, The traditional Blessing of Throats was

to have taken place at the noon Mass; however,

with this Monday’s noon Mass now being a

funeral Mass, the Blessing of Throats will take

place at Morning Prayer, which begins at 8:00

am and at Evening Prayer at 6:00 pm, both at St.

Anne Church of All Saints Parish. These will be

the only two opportunities for the Traditional

Blessing of throats this Monday. If you wish to

have your throat blessed on this memorial of St.

Blaise, join us for Morning or Evening Prayer from

the Liturgy of the Hours. (Also, know that, if

needed, your throat can be blessed any day.)

A couple of things are coming soon which

you may want to take advantage of to chase

away the winter blues and spend some special

time with loved ones and/or friends. Sunday

February 9th is World Marriage Day, and on the

Saturday before, February 8th, our parish will be

having a “celebration of sacramental marriage”

evening with dinner, a presentation, and time for

prayer for married couples (engaged couples

are welcome too). Tickets to the event are free,

but you must have a ticket to reserve your spot

so we can plan accordingly. Contact the Parish

Office to get a ticket.

Then the next Saturday, February 15th, come

and be entertained by a comedy show “Sisters

Act Out” featuring a group of Catholic women

from downstate who are known for their funny

and respectful comedy routine regarding their

Catholic school experience. This event is

sponsored by – and a fundraiser for – All Saints

Catholic School. The $20 admittance includes

the Comedy Show, hors d’oeuvres, and a cash

bar. The event starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are

available at the All Saints Catholic School Office

and the Parish Office.

Have a blessed 4th week of Ordinary Time,

Stewardship in Our Readings When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, they offered a

sacrificial gift “in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” An

offering of a specific size or kind is not “dictated” when we bring our gifts

to the altar at Mass. Is my gift reflective of the many blessings I have

received?

Bulletin Prayer Lists for the Sick and Military Please Note Changes

Our monthly bulletin sick list and military list, that are printed the first

Sunday of each month, will now be refreshed quarterly.

Indeed, there are many who need our prayers. However, it has come

to our attention in the past, that sometimes the person on the list may live

out of town and may have passed and we have no knowledge of this, or

the person may be doing better, but the one who listed them has

forgotten to call back. Similarly with our military list, if it is not updated, it is

not factual.

For this reason, names called in during a quarter will appear in the

bulletin the first Sunday of the month during that quarter (e.g. Jan., Feb.,

March). After each quarter, we start with a new blank list and welcome

your calls to add names of those who need our prayers (ill/hurting and

military).

Missed calling in a name for one of our prayer lists? Give us a call or

email us and we will be happy to add it to the list for this quarter (through

March).

We thank you for your assistance with this!

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family,

embraced by God’s love. We are centered on the

Holy Eucharist, inspired by the Communion of Saints

and empowered by the Holy Spirit to enliven and

ignite a community bound by love. We are united in

vibrant service under the leadership of the Trinity.

Parish Mission We, the members of All Saints Parish are called as a

sacramental people to grow in our faith and

participate fully in the one Body of Christ, centered in

the Eucharist. We value each other’s gifts and talents

as we serve the needs of our community while living

the truth and love of the Gospel.

Need a Ride to Mass?

Our parish partners

with Thunder Bay Transportation Authority to

provide a ride for those who are in need.

Those who need a ride will need to call TBTA

(ph: 989-356-4596) two hours before you would

like to be picked up to schedule your ride. If

you wish to have it charged, you must tell TBTA

dispatcher you are charging it to All Saints

Parish (we will not be doing reimbursements as

we would have no proof of a ride).

The parish will cover the ride only to/from

Church for the 4 PM Saturday Mass and the

11 AM Sunday Mass (based on the hours of

operation for TBTA).
