TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.” The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word.

EL TIEMPO Los días de fiesta ya pasaron, el año se nos viene encima. ¿Y qué clase de año será? De acuerdo con las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy, será “el año de la gracia del Señor”. Y Jesús con seguridad no se refería solamente a los próximos trescientos sesenta y cinco días cuando hablaba a la gente en ese tiempo. El anuncio de la “llegada” de la gracia de Dios lo hizo Jesús para todos los tiempos, para cada año. De manera similar, leemos hoy en Nehemías cómo la gente se reunía con solemnidad a escuchar la Palabra de Dios como si fuera la primera vez. Escuchaban y luego se postraban con el rostro en la tierra y lloraban. Pero el profeta decía: “Este día está dedicado al Señor… no estén tristes”. El “año de la gracia del Señor” es este año. El día “dedicado al Señor” es hoy. El tiempo de escuchar es ahora. ¿Qué clase de año tendrás? ¿Qué clase de día? La ayuda de Dios siempre está aquí. From the Desk of the Pastor… Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord:

“As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.” Our parish has been evangelized for several decades and the faith has been passed on for generations. In the Lord we have learned to see with the heart and above all we have discovered the cultural and ethnic richness that makes up this Diocese of Immigrants. This is so because the baptized members of our parishes come from all corners of the world. We know that Religion is intimately linked to the Culture that identifies each country and continent. We do not have to travel to come to know and share the wealth that surrounds customs, traditions, beliefs and faith. In this Continent we have God's people who come from the Americas: the Caribbean and Central and South America. In our parish we have a Hispanic community of which the vast majority are from the Dominican Republic. This past Saturday, Sunday and Monday we celebrated the Triduum in honor of Our Lady of Altagracia. We thank God for their presence in Saint Fortunata parish – Caribbean families, men and women of sincere faith, convinced of their Hispanic heritage who evangelize by their very lives, especially the women. This Triduum serves to reinforce the commitment for our life of faith. We give thanks, especially to all of those who made it possible, beginning with our Administrative Assistant María Jorge, along with the other women such as Ana Rodríguez, Carmen Pérez, Rosca De Los Santos, Matilde Rodríguez, María Coca, all the Sponsors and many others who make a difference for our Parish Community. Thank you all for this beautiful Triduum in honor of Our Lady of Altagracia, the Mother of our Lord.

The first month of 2019 is already coming to a

close; we ask the Lord and our Blessed Mother to continue accompanying us every day on this journey of life, and to guide our steps on the path of life, service and peace.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en el Señor: ‘Así como el cuerpo es uno y tiene muchos miembros y todos ellos, a pesar de ser muchos, forman un solo cuerpo, así también es Cristo.” Nuestra parroquia ha sido evangelizada por varias décadas y esta fe ha sido transmitida por varias generaciones. En el Señor hemos aprendido a ver con el corazón y hemos ido descubriendo, sobre todo, en esta Diócesis de los Inmigrantes la riqueza cultural y étnica que la compone porque tenemos miembros de nuestras parroquias bautizados de todos los rincones del mundo. Sabemos que la Religiosidad está íntimamente vinculada a la Cultura que le identifica a cada país y Continente. No tenemos que viajar para conocer y compartir esa riqueza que envuelve costumbres, tradiciones, creencias y fe. De nuestro Continente tenemos pueblo de Dios quienes procedemos de las Américas: Central, Caribe y Sud América. En nuestra parroquia tenemos comunidad hispana, su gran mayoría procede de República Dominicana. Precisamente el sábado, domingo y lunes anterior tuvimos el Triduo en honor a Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. Damos gracias a Dios por esta presencia en Santa Fortunata, familias caribeñas, hombres y mujeres de una fe sincera, convencidos de su herencia hispana y evangelizadores con su propia vida, en especial sus mujeres. Este Triduo refuerza el compromiso en pro de la vida de fe. Damos gracias, especialmente a todas ellas, empezando por nuestra Asistente Administrativa María Jorge, junto con otras mujeres como Ana Rodríguez, Carmen Pérez, Matilde Rodríguez, Rosca De Los Santos, María Coca y muchas otras más que hacen la diferencia para bien en nuestra Comunidad parroquial.
