Welcometo Hessen.
Dear reader,
Any company that is looking to achieve global success needs to choose a strong international base for its operations. For investors, the federal state of Hessen in central Germany is the premier location in Europe. We have so much to offer your business: a stable economy and financial system, a high level of productivity, a highly qualified and motivated workforce, an innovative research and development landscape, exceptional conditions for investment, a first-class infrastructure, a legal framework that you can rely on, and a fair system of taxation.
The strength of the Hessen region and of Germany as a whole is borne out by international com-parisons. Did you know, for example, that our country has the highest GDP per capita out of all 28 EU states? And the Germany brand is proving to be yet another positive locational factor: in the GfK Roper Nation Brands Index of 50 developed countries, Germany has now occupied one of the top three places for ten years in a row. According to the American Chamber of Commerce 71 per cent of US companies rate Germany as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ as a location for business.
The federal state of Hessen, in the heart of Germany and Europe, holds particular appeal for international companies. Just ask any one of the 12,000 or so foreign firms that successfully operate here, or the people from 190 countries who wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
We look forward to telling you about Hessen’s credentials as a place to do business, its inter-national presence, its capacity for innovation and – last but not least – the high quality of life that it offers. After all, we want you to make the right decision for your investment.
We’ll accompany you every step of the way – from the initial idea and the selection of potential locations to the recruitment of specialist staff.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Frankfurt main station
We are leaders.Hessen has one of the best-performing economies of any federal state in Germany. Thanks to its central location in Europe and its busy international airport the region also serves as a logistics hub between the world’s conurbations. Frankfurt is the best-known city in Hessen and is surrounded by flourishing economic centres in all parts of the region.
Some 8.6% of Germany’s gross domestic product is earned in Hessen – by 7.5% of the country’s population. Accordingly, the GDP per head in Hessen is 15% higher than the German national average.
At €80,000, the GDP per person employed in Hessen is in a leading position by international comparison. In 2016 goods valued at almost €59 billion were exported from Hessen. Almost two thirds went to European countries, with the Americas and Asia each accounting for 16%.
In 2015 foreign direct investment in Hessen totalled €69 billion. This accountsfor 15% of all direct investments in Germany. The countries that contributed the highest amount of investment were the EU nations, Switzerland, the USA, South Korea, Japan and China. In 2015 almost half the companies that the economic development agency helped to establish operations in the region came from just two countries, the USA and China.

Intelligent integration: the benefits of our superb transport infra- structure – which encompasses high-speed intercity trains, autobahns, river ports and Frankfurt’s international airport – include time savings, regular connections, late cut-off times and a high degree of reliability. All the major European economic centres can be reached by plane in under two hours. And this first-class infrastructure is being continually improved in line with demand – protecting the environment and cutting costs.

Every year around 65 million passengers and more than two million tonnes of air freight pass through Frankfurt Airport, which is one of the largest airports in Europe.
Hessen boasts a comprehensive rail network, offering rapid connections for people and goods from east to west and north to south across the region.
Hessen’s river ports are served by ship, rail, and road as part of a seamless intermodal network for the transport of goods. They link the region with Europe’s major sea ports.
Nearly 100 airlines operate out of Frankfurt am Main, with about 4,600 flights per week serving nearly 300 destinations across all continents.

The Hessen region is the ideal location for advancing research ideas and turning them into technologies and innovative products. Academic and commercial research are closely integrated here. Hessen’s high-tech sector is gaining its momentum from collaborations between science and research, from entrepreneurial ideas and from the willingness of companies to invest.
We arehightech.
The Technology Centre for Industry 4.0 (MiT 4.0) at Darmstadt Technical University is one of five national institutes that SMEs can approach with questions about digital technology and the Industrial Internet of Things.
Representatives from industry, academia and politics set up the House of IT research centre in Darmstadt in order to provide further support to the ICT sector in the Rhine-Main region.
The House of Energy in Kassel serves as a think-tank and forum for representatives from business, academia and politics to communicate and share knowledge related to the switch to renewable energies.
For information and communication technologies (ICT), Hessen is a prime location that offers excellent prospects for the future. Around 122,000 people work in more than 10,000 IT-oriented companies that generate around €40 billion in revenue, provid-ing the perfect environment for companies looking to locate in the region.
Industrie 4.0 is the name of a German government initiative promoting the digitisa-tion of manufacturing. It is setting the challenges of tomorrow along with The Internet of Things, in which production is becoming increasingly interconnected. In Hessen, the efforts of innovative SMEs, global manufacturers, highly specialised engineering firms and scientists to bring the future into the present day are being ably supported by a strong ICT industry and digital infrastructure.
Hessen’s biotechnology sector, with some 200 directly related companies in which more than 16,000 employees generate a turnover of €12.1 billion, is one of the leading biotech actors in Germany. The medical and industrial sectors are particularly strongly represented.
In the field of materials technology, Hessen already has one of the highest concentrations of suppliers and end-user companies of any of Germany’s non-city states.
Environmental technology is driven by roughly 1,300 businesses active in the development of renewable energy, waste management, recycling and water and waste water treatment.
Hessen is one of the top ten most innovative regions in Europe*.

Visit to a trade fair in Germany
In October 2015 the market research institute TNS Emnid interviewed 150 directors of international companies that have operations in Hessen.
When deciding on Hessen as an investment location three quarters of investors initially considered economic regions in other European countries. For more than two thirds of interviewees the arguments for choosing Hessen over other German regions were the strongest.
Most international companies in Hessen rate their current business situation as good, very good or excellent. The picture is near-identical when it comes to company fore-casts. More than two thirds are planning to increase their workforce over the coming years and more than half are looking to grow further in the next three years.
Flight connections, infrastructure and location are the deciding factors when it comes to choosing Hessen as an investment location.
