Dear Friends in Christ at King of Glory,

With the coming of June, we officially enter into a time of transition. A) We said “thanks and happy retirement” to two of our exceptional church staff members—Lorie Hughes, our education coordinator, and Deb Peters, our worship coordinator. B) We moved to our summer worship schedule with 1 service each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. C) Our school year programs take a break with the end of Sunday school and confirmation. D) Our fine choirs, which add so much to our worship life, are finished for the season. It is a time of

transition.

During this transition, we will seek to hire a Worship and Music Coordinator and a Sunday School Coordinator. The job descriptions are in place. The se-lection committees are appointed. Now we need some great candidates. If you, or someone you know, might be interested, spread the word. Have them send a letter of application to the church. King of Glory’s church staff is in-

credible. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?

During this transition, we are looking for ways to make our Sunday school, Logos program, confirmation ministry, and youth ministries “state of the art”. I invite you to get involved and help with this. To top it off, you get to work

alongside Pastor Jen!

Now you may ask: “So, Pastor, what can I do to help?”

1. Worship—come to church as often as you can this summer. Help KOG break last summer’s worship attendance record. Bring your friends and neighbors so that they, too, can hear God’s Word and receive God’s gifts.

Offer yourself to serve—we need special music, ushers, greeters, and cantors.

2. Get involved—use your gifts to serve your church. A church as big as ours needs lots of people to step forward to make things happen. You are val-ued. You are needed. Sign up to help with Sunday school next fall. Step for-ward to be part of the Wednesday Logos program. Join others in being adults interested in youth by offering yourself to serve in confirmation and youth group activities. Take an interest in the Facilities Task Force and help KOG plan and enact the finishing of our building. Step up and

get involved in the Strategic Planning Task Force which

will work to put together a plan for KOG 2014-2020.

It will seek to address the questions: Where are we as

a church going? What is our plan? How can we get there?

You can make a difference in your church.

Hi KOG Family,

My first year of seminary has officially ended and it definitely flew by. One year down, and two more to go. It was a great year and I am looking forward to the rest of the seminary journey. After months of lots of discernment including many conversations with friends I have decided to switch back to MA Diaconal Ministry. Diaconal Ministry is currently one of three Word and Service rosters in the ELCA.

Next year I will be starting Field Work as well as continuing taking classes from Wartburg Seminary and join my the Distributed Learning crew. Instead of taking classes at Wartburg I will be doing them online. And then return to Wartburg for my final year.

Please join us on June 8th at 10:30am, after worship, for a presentation about Theological Edu-

cation.

We will worship at 9:30 Sunday mornings this

summer starting on May 25th through August 31st

(Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend).

3. Give generously—of your self and of your resources. Summer is the time most churches see a big drop in financial giving. That puts a great strain on the church as we seek to carry out our mission. King of Glory can be different. With your generous help, KOG can move forward strong and confidently. I invite you to do

what you can.

4. Serve as you are able—God gives us our neighbors to serve. Look for ways you can serve as Christ served you. You’ll find opportunities for that service in the midst of your daily life. May God bless you as

you serve.

I am confident that if you and I put these things into practice, this time of transition can bring new life and

vitality to King of Glory.

See you in church!

God bless you and keep you in His Grace!

3 Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As one of your pastors, I get excited when I see you arrive for worship. As you welcome and en-courage each another or even extend a hand to pray for someone else, I give thanks to God for you. As you sit in your chair, listening, praying, and making a joyful noise to the Lord, I’m

grateful for the chance to gather together in God’s house to offer our thanks and praise.

But there’s actually something else that makes me even more excited.

I get really jazzed when I see you gathering together to pray, listen, sing, break bread, or hear

God’s Word OUTSIDE of our building.

Now, hear me clearly: I love when we gather together in God’s house for worship. When the

sanctuary is full and we join our voices in praise, there are few better sounds in the world.

But.

But when believers gather together outside of the sanctuary/temple, like they did in the early

church as described in the book of Acts, my heart overflows.

Acts 2:46 reads: 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the good-will of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being

saved.

I was recently approached by KOG member Bonnie Ramage who asked if I had heard of a minis-try model called “IF: TABLE,” based upon the question, “IF God is real…then what?” (more in-formation can be found here: http://ifgathering.com/if/table/). She wondered if KOG might ever do something like it, where women would gather together to share a meal, wrestle with questions of faith and life, and form deep connections over food and conversation. As she told me

about it, my heart started to dance.

She wasn’t suggesting that people skip out on worship, but rather, that we’d gather for worship AND THEN gather again (sometime later) in homes or restaurants. I dreamed with Bonnie about how people might gather as strangers, but leave as friends and how people could learn about themselves, but also learn about our Lord Jesus. We wondered if the Spirit could take a simple concept like this and bear fruit not only in individual lives, but in us as the church. My heart

started to overflow.

I’m excited to announce that we’re going to give it a shot. Six women will form our first

“IF:Table” this summer, gathering around a table once a month for conversation, food,

questions, and prayer. Another two groups will begin in September . And maybe, God-

willing, a few more will begin after that.

If this sort of thing makes your heart dance, let’s talk!

See you in worship (and out there in the world),

Pastor Jen

Praising God in a Grand Way!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the purchase of the new sanctuary piano. Your generous financial support has brought us to 60% of our goal in a very short time!

Several members of the Piano Fund committee had the oppor-tunity to evaluate pianos available through Greg Depner of Montana Pianos. The committee members considered size, quality, compatibility for the existing and future sanctuary space, as well as the availability of working with a reputable dealer.

Quality grand pianos require hours of “by hand" work. This why they are relatively expensive. To view a YouTube video about the making of Mason & Hamlin pianos, please click on the following link: http://youtu.be/GU2Hc6VgkEM

Our worship experience will be enhanced in both obvious and subtle ways. Music is an important part of our Lutheran tradi-tion and is the thread that weaves through our services. This piano will be the foundation of our musical experience in wor-ship for many years to come.

To make a contribution, please place a check in the offering plate or mail your contribution to the church. Put “piano fund” on the memo line so that your gift can be added to all the oth-ers we have received. If you would like to visit about the pi-ano, any of the committee members would welcome your call.

Information for our Congregations

Please pray for all our Family campers arriving to get the camp up and ready for the season.

It’s not too late to register for camp this summer! Space remains in most youth sessions and in those for fami-lies and adults. You can register online, or use the forms distributed with the youth and family/adult brochures in your congregation. Or call us at the camp office for further information.

Christikon covers the full costs for each at-risk kid participating in Sojourners Camp. (We expect to have 24 this summer) We invite individuals, congregations and their auxiliaries to consider special giving for camp scholarships this summer.

Special guest speakers become part of the Christikon life this summer during sessions for adults and families. During Mountain Weekend 1 (July 4-6) we feature Tim Tostengard, pastor of Amercian Lutheran Church in Billings. Dur-ing both the Continuing Education Retreat ( July 28-Aug. 3), and Mountain Weekend 2 (Aug. 1-3), we are joined by Aana Vigen, a Christian Ethicist at Loyola University, Chicago, and Terry Fretheim, Old Testament Professor at Luther Seminary, St. Paul. Come spend a few days of relaxation, learning, and faith growth with us.

Remember to pray for your congregation’s ministry through Christikon this summer, for the summer staff, and for all who join in the Christikon life.

It is the mission of Christikon to awaken and nurture faith in Christ— exploring God’s creation and the

adventure of life together.

Sunday School Offering

The offering from our final Sunday school

weeks yielded enough to provide 8 honey

bee packages!! Each $20 package includes

bees, hives, and training. Thanks, kids, for

your gifts through the year that will help

people all over the world!

Worship and Music Update

Since Deb Peters, our Worship Coordinator, announced her intention to retire in May, we have worked

to fill that important position in the life of our church. We reviewed and updated the job description.

We appointed a selection committee. We put the word out about our opening. We are set and ready

to do interviews and make a selection. The problem is—talented applicants for a position like this are

very hard to find.

So we have had to put Plan B into effect. We gathered our music staff people and laid out a plan for

this summer. Bob Quam, recently retired from Christikon Bible Camp, has volunteered to be our in-

terim Worship and Music Coordinator. He will help put worship services together, secure the cantors,

and help in other ways to make sure our summer worship services are well done. We have the service

players for each Sunday lined up. The service player will help select the hymns and songs we use that

particular Sunday and rehearse with the cantors and the special music for the day. Then we selected

the liturgies we will use for the summer months.

So, we have the summer covered. In the meantime, we continue our search for a new Worship and

Music Coordinator. We hope a gifted and talented person will step forward who can serve King of

Glory well.

If you have questions, or would like more information, contact Pastor Jim Darchuk or Jeremy Stricker,

the Worship and Music Board representative.

STEWARDSHIP AND THE 10-10-80 PRINCIPLE

A member of the congregation recently mentioned that he and his wife tried to base their giving off the 10-10-80 principle. Although I remembered writing about this principle a few years back, I had to refresh my memory on how it works. In short, this is how the principle is applied:

Give 10 Percent

When we give our first 10 percent to God, we give the Lord our first fruits and give proportionate-ly. Recorded in Proverbs 3:9 (NRSV) are these words, "Honor the Lord with your substance, with the first fruits of all your produce." By doing so, we acknowledge God to be the creator and pro-vider of all things. Since God gave us everything, we are simply returning to God a portion of what God has given to us. As the Apostle Paul says, "What do you have that you did not re-ceive?" (1 Cor. 4:7 NRSV).

Save 10 Percent

When we save 10 percent, we demonstrate discipline and an orientation for the future. It also sets a good example for our children (and our government). Let them know that, when we save faith-fully, we maintain better control of our financial future and avoid much of the stress and anxiety experienced by those who continually spend their entire paycheck and have nothing for “a rainy day.” To reach this goal, we need to follow the simple principles of saving more and saving sys-tematically.

Spend 80 Percent

God does not give us specifics about the cars we drive, the homes we live in, or the clothes we wear. God does, however, "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God who provides us with everything for our enjoyment." (1 Tim. 6:17). As we at King of Glory know, God provides more than we need for food and shelter. This is not a sin. Living with an arrogant attitude, howev-er, is displeasing to God. Also, putting our hope and trust in material possessions rather than God is futile.

What if the 10-10-80 program is too much for you to begin with? Then start at something more manageable, like a 5-5-90 program and work your way up from there. Already at 10-10-80? Then challenge yourself to go 11-11-78 or beyond.

Stewardship is like exercise—you do not run marathons before you are able to run around the block. Work on it gradually. If you fall down, pick yourself up. The journey is its own reward.

Eric Nord, Stewardship Chair

baptized at King of Glory during May.

God’s blessings to you and your

families !

Our prayers and condolences to the

family and friends of the following

saints who have passed away:

Deborah Keller

Gladys Thompsen

May God be with you during your

time of sorrow.

I WANTED TO DO OR SAY SOMETHING BUT…….a small group study

Have you ever thought or said the above words and then ended up doing or saying nothing be-cause you just didn’t know what was appropriate? Many of us have found ourselves in such a situation and then later felt guilty for our inaction. Help is on the way…..

This small group study will address the above situation and give us helpful ideas of what to do and say when a neighbor, friend, family or congregational member is going through a difficult time. Each of the four Wednesday evening sessions in June and early July will last approximate-ly one hour starting at 7PM and be held on the patio at Jerry and Claudia Baker’s home, 1809 Ar-cadia Drive in Forest Park.

Please join us for one, two or all of these informal sessions. A presenter will share helpful infor-mation for 20-30 minutes and then group discussion will take place. All are welcome! And be-cause it is summer: no reading materials are required but each presenter will share a list of ideas and resources for attendees to use.

JUNE 11: A Pastor’s Perspective: Pastor Ben Quanbeck will share from his training and ex-periences of visiting the sick and the dying. Ideas of what to do and what not to do will stimulate our conversation.

JUNE 18: Empathetic Listening: retired special education teacher and current CASA volun-teer, Cheryl Brown, will help us understand that sometimes silence can be the best response.

JUNE 25: What Have You Planned ?: Bernice Bjertness, retired nurse and one of the found-ers of the Billings Hospice program, will share thoughts from one of her favorite authors that will help each of us as we face difficult times.

July 2: Helpful Therapies: Karen Haughey (musician) and Brenda Maas (journalist) will share how we can use music and journaling as helpful therapies for others and ourselves.

If you have questions about what a small group study is or about any of the above, please contact Pastor Ben (855-1379) or Claudia Baker (656-5249). We hope to see you at one or all of these informal sessions.

Highlights from Board of Directors meeting held on May 20, 2014

Task Force #1 has been renamed the Facilities Task Force. Marty Ambuehl chairs the task force whose job it is to find ways to complete our present church building. Congregational members will be invited to participate in the discussions and recommendations that are made. Look for more information about this task force in the near future. Your help, suggestions, and support are needed. Any recommendation from this task force will be brought to the Board of Directors and on to the congregation for official action before any work is done.

Task Force #2 has been renamed the Strategic Planning Task Force. Russ Plath and Robin Tunnicliff co-chair this group. This task force will help us answer some important questions in the life of King of Glory: Where are we going? What is our plan? How can we get there? You are invited to get involved with this task force, too. Help us build a strategic plan 2014-2020. Look for more information on this task force in the upcoming bulletins and newsletters.

We officially received new members by way of transfer—Mark, Melissa and Kyle Widseth; and Linda Halvor-son. Welcome to our new members! There will be a New Member Class offered this summer. King of Glory welcomes all to join us in worship, learning, serving and giving.

We approved job descriptions for the Sunday School Coordinator and the Cherub Choir Director positions. We appointed Pr Jen Quanbeck, Beth Adam, Cheryl Jones, Heather McKenzie and Pr Darchuk to serve on the selection committee for the Sunday School Coordinator.

We selected Miranda McNeil to serve as our Church Nursery Coordinator. She will oversee the operations of the nursery by scheduling workers and taking care of the nursery.

We adopted changes to update the Employee Handbook.

We reviewed the progress of the “Piano Fund”. We are now over half-way to our goal. Financial gifts can be given at any time to this fund. When we are ready to purchase the piano, a congregational meeting will be called to authorize the purchase.

The Board of Directors meetings are always open to congregational members. We meet the third Tuesday of each month in the Fireside Room.

The “Under 40” BBQ – Saturday June 7, 6:00 pm

Due to increasingly busy lifestyles, making connections with peers in the church is particularly challenging for those who are under 40 years old. Let’s fix that.

On Saturday June 7 there will be a potluck BBQ here at King of Glory specifically for the “under 40” crowd.

The details you need to know: 1. This will be a potluck meal please bring a salad, side, or dessert. 2. Hamburgers, Hot dogs, Buns, Condiments, Paper plates, Plastic ware, Lemonade, and Water will be provided. 3. Child care and children’s activities will be available for those who need it. 4. This gathering is intended to be 90% Social & 10% business where we can talk about how the church can best serve your families and how you can best serve the church in the years ahead.

If you would like to help: 1. We need 1-2 people who will bring grills & cook the meat. 2. If you have activities that will entertain multiple children they would be a blessing to those serving in childcare. 3. A little bit of Set-up and Clean-up work will need to be done

4. Start talking to people about this event... You don't have to be a King of Glory Member to at-tend. 5. If you would like to donate Hamburgers, Hot dogs, Buns, or Condiments to this gathering, they will be appreciated.

For those who fall outside the “Under 40” designation – if you would like to help in any way please contact Pastor Ben to see what is most needed.

Annual Garage Sale is coming soon!

As you are doing your Spring cleaning, keep the "Champ Camp Team" (youth mission trip 2014) in mind and consider donating items you no longer need to their fundraiser Garage Sale. The Sale will be on THURSDAY (*note new day) June 12th from 8am-2pm and Friday, June 13th from 8am-12noon. Donations must be clearly labeled (For Garage Sale!) and can be dropped off in the lower Commons/Fellowship Hall. If you need assistance transporting items to church, please speak with Nick (672-9897) or Pastor Jen (855-1537). Thanks!

Dearest people of King of Glory,

This past Sunday blessed me beyond measure. I thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday School Finale,

the meaningful retirement milestone during worship, and the lovely retirement party. Thank you

so very much for the wonderful food brought by all and the party hosted by the KOG

Connects/Fellowship Committee. I am so grateful for the congregational gifts I received – the

beautiful scrapbook album, the wicker swing for my yard, the generous gift of money, and the

photography gift certificate! Thank you for such amazing gifts! Thanks, too, to the youth group

for their framed greeting to me and to the fourth graders for the tie-dyed scarf. I also loved all

the cards, email messages, hugs, and other gifts I received. I am humbled by your

thoughtfulness.

I will always treasure this time that I have served as the Christian Education Coordinator. Thank

you for everything from the bottom of my heart.

Much love,

Lorie Hughes

Jason says "thanks" for all your prayers and support.

He is making progress in his recovery and our family is

Dear friends at King of Glory,

Thank you so much for the wonderful meal and retirement party - for the gorgeous quilt,

amazing “The Coordinator” song , beautiful planter of flowers, CD, gifts of money, and other

gifts and cards. Thank you also for the kind and meaningful words so many of you shared with

me.

Most of all, thank you for the privilege of being a part of the music ministry at King of Glory,

as a service player for many, many years, and as the worship and music coordinator for the

past two years. It has been a real joy to work with so many truly gifted musicians young and

old and an honor to coordinate and lead our music in praise and thanks to God.

Covert Digital Scavenger Hunt

Join your fellow youth group members for an evening of digi-

tal scavenging! We will meet at church at 5:00 on Friday, May

30th. After we have pizza and get our instructions, we will hit

the streets to find our list of items. Then we will return to

church to share our pictures and have ice cream. There is sug-

gested donation of $5 for this event. Hope to see you there!

Garage Sale Fundraiser

The youth who are attending this summer’s

mission trip to Lutherhaven Champ Camp will

be hosting a garage sale on Thursday and Fri-

day, June 12th (8 a.m.—2 p.m.) and 13th (8 a.m.

—noon). Please note that this is a change from

last year. If you have items to donate, please

drop them off downstairs at the east end of

the fellowship hall. Or, if you’d prefer, contact

Nick to have a crew come pick the items up.

Volunteers to help sort and price are also wel-

come. As always, thank you for your support!
