Internship Program Overview

Program Description: An internship is defined as a hands-on professional learning experience where a student works at an off-campus location to gain work experience. An internship can be an excellent and eye-opening way to decide if a certain career is in fact the right fit. All academy students on-track for graduation are required to participate in an internship their senior year. Students are supported throughout the program by their coordinators and instructors and are graded on hours worked, attendance, assignments, professionalism, and evaluations by their intern supervisor.

• Students are not paid.

• Work Permits are not required.

• Worker’s Compensation Insurance is covered by Palm Springs Unified School District.

• Minimum Required Internship Hours - 24 hours annually.

▪ 12 Hours First Semester & 12 Hours Second Semester

• Students must be placed in an internship directly related to public safety (law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services), and if possible, in their area of interest.

• This handbook will also be used for students participating in off-campus mentorships.

Student Preparation: Students take a sequence of four career technical education courses in public safety and bring a unique set of skills that can be applied to the workplace. Additionally, as part of the academy experience, students have had exposure to project-based teamwork, community and industry connections, presentations, mentorships, and off-campus experiences (community service and field trips). Internship Placement: Students may be placed into their internship through application, interviews with our public safety business partners, and/or through recommendation by PSA staff. Program Objectives:

1. To provide students with practical experiences that will help make their classroom instruction more meaningful.

2. To provide training opportunities for students to practice skills and attitudes learned in the classroom.

3. To provide an opportunity, with local organizations, for students to acquire skills and knowledge that are best developed on the job.

4. To provide students with the ability to keep up with the changing world of work by putting emphasis on problem-solving, critical-thinking, and decision-making.

5. To provide opportunities for students to make social adjustments and to develop the ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors.

6. To emphasize to students the importance of being able to follow directions, pay attention to details, and accept supervision.

7. To provide relevant instruction to help students prepare for public safety occupations and related professions.

8. To foster an understanding in students of the benefits and responsibilities of gainful employment.

9. To facilitate the transition between school and employment.

10. To point out to students that constant educational growth is necessary for successful employment and good citizenship.

If an emergency occurs and you cannot attend or will arrive late, you must contact your intern supervisor at least 2 hours in advance and the WBL and PSA Coordinators. You may be marked down for every absence, regardless of the reason for the absence. Remember that absences and tardies will also affect your intern supervisor’s evaluation of you! 3. The scores you receive on your two formal evaluations will translate into “bonuses” (extra points in grade) or “docked pay” (loss of points). At the end of your internship, you may also ask your intern supervisor for a formal Reference Letter, but only if you know you have done an outstanding job at your site!
