The (unofficial) Chicago area tap water taste test 1. Sit back. Relax. Water is the source of all life. 2. Describe the appearance: Is this water a certain shade of a color other than clear? Are there particles in it? Chunks? Is it sparkly, bubbly even? What’s the general vibe you get from this sample? 3. Describe odor: Does this water smell like a gym towel? Like magnolias blooming in early April? Summer rain? The more particular you are the better. 4. Describe taste: In addition to salty, sour, sweet, bitter, refreshing, smoky, etc., also describe mouth feel. Is it light, goopy, dense, like melted gold? 5. If you had to guess, where was this sample taken? The Chicago River? A suburban well? 6. Rank 1-6, 1 being most desirable.
