ABOUT THE RAIDERSSouthern Oregon enters the weekend with a 10-3 record, but has lost two straight games. Th e Raiders have lost to Cal Maritime twice. EOU won at Cal Maritime, 71-51. SOU leads NAIA Div. 2 in off ensive rebounds per game (19.0) and total rebounds per game (49.6). Southern is holding opponents to 34 percent shooting from the fi eld, which is 10th in the country. LAST TIME OUTTh e No. 5 Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball team held off No. 10 Eastern Oregon University in a top 10 battle last Saturday, 68-59. Holding just a two point lead, 30-28, a minute into the second half, Lewis-Clark State struggled to shake loose a Mountaineer squad that always seemed to answer with a 3-pointer or steal to keep the game close. Th anks, in part, to 15 second half points by Voshell, the Warriors were able to create a little bit of dis-tance and push to their largest lead of 49-37 at the 11:05 mark. Eastern Oregon was able to cut the lead to 60-57 with 2:55 left in regulation, but a steal by Brittany Niebergall and back-to-back buckets on the inside by Voshell and Fierro helped LCSC stay in front for the win. Lewis-Clark State held EOU to a season-low 19 fi eld goals and 27 percent shooting from the fi eld. Th e Warriors were 44 percent from the fi eld.

A NEW PROGRAM HIGHTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team continues to climb in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 and has a new program high ranking released Monday. Th e Mountaineers had their previous school-high ranking of No. 13 during the 2003-04 season. THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...MOUNTAINEERS CRUISE PAST SOUTHERNJan. 22, 2011

Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team eased past Southern Oregon University, 69-35.

Rosebud Guthrie led the Mountaineers (13-7) (5-6) with career highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Th e sopho-more fi nished 7 of 10 from the fi eld. Th e Zillah, Wash. native added a career-high three steals. Kelsea Hurliman chipped in 12 points. Alyssa Garro and Samantha Flett each threw seven assists.

Eastern Oregon jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Alexi Smith scored the fi rst basket for Southern Oregon with 15:37 left in the fi rst half. It started a 6-0 run for SOU. Colby Patton closed the fi rst half with a layup with three seconds remaining to give the Mountaineers a 30-12 half time advantage.

Southern’s 12 points were the fewest points EOU has given up in a half since Walla Walla University scored six points in the second half of an Eastern 93-21 win on Oct. 27, 2009. Th e last time the Mountaineers gave up that few of points in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game was on Feb. 22, 2007 when EOU allowed 11 fi rst half points in a 53-34 win over Oregon Tech.

A Taylor Stewart free throw with 4:25 left in regulation gave Eastern its largest lead of the game, 64-28. Th e

game featured zero ties and no lead changes. Southern Oregon received little trouble from the Mountaineers on Dec. 17 earlier this season when the Raiders won, 69-53. In that game, EOU had a pair of two-point leads to begin the game, and then forced three ties early in the contest. But, the game belonged to Southern.

Eastern outscored SOU 22-7 in points off of turnovers, 28-16 in points in the paint, 20-6 in second chance points, and 20-4 in fastbreak points. Each team fi nished with 19 points off of their bench. Th e Mountaineers had 22 assists to Southern’s four. Both teams committed 16 turnovers. Eastern Oregon outrebounded SOU, 49-35.

Smith led the Raiders with 11 points. Celonna Ar-rington came off of the bench to grab a team-high six rebounds. SOU was held to 23 percent shooting from the fi eld and 2 of 18 from behind the arc. Southern Or-egon was 7 for 15 from the free-throw line. Th e Moun-taineers were 41 percent from the fi eld, 11 of 29 from three-point range, and 8 for 10 from the free-throw line.

EASTERN WOMEN FLY PAST OWLSJan. 21, 2011

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team ended its losing streak with a 69-60 over Oregon Tech.

Th e Mountaineers (12-7) (4-6) were led by a 16-point performance from Vintea Georges. Th e junior was 4 for 9 from the fi eld, and added a career-high nine rebounds. Kelsea Hurliman fi nished with 14 points and Nicole Redd had 12 points. Kyle Miller grabbed nine rebounds and threw four assists.

EOU fi nished 37 percent from the fi eld and 6 of 20 from behind the perimeter. Eastern won for the ninth time out of the last 10 meetings against OIT, despite commit-ting 17 turnovers to Tech’s 16, and throwing 12 assists to the Owls’ 16. Th e Mountaineers improved to 8-2 when they outrebound their opponent. Friday EOU won the rebound battle, 41-31.

Th e game featured three ties and a pair of lead changes. A Kassi Conditt jumper with 11:17 left in the fi rst half gave Tech its largest lead of the game, 12-6. Th e Lady Owls led from the 14:09 mark in the fi rst half until 5:18 remaining left in the half. A Redd three-pointer fi nished a fastbreak and gave EOU the lead with 5:17 left until halft ime, 21-19.

Th e Mountaineers led 33-25 at halft ime, and spread their lead to the largest of the game, 43-32, with 14:18 remaining in regulation. Tech responded with a 9-0 run over the next 2:20 to cut the lead to two points. OIT’s Brittany Cherry tied the game at 54 with a jumper with a 5:21 left in regulation. Eastern Oregon answered with an 8-2 run that gave it the cushion needed for the victory.

Cherry fi nished with a game-high 18 points. Aundrea Albright added 13 points and eight rebounds. Karissa Dixon and Morgan Hofman each had four assists. Tech (10-12) (2-8) was 40 percent from the fi eld, 4 for 9 from behind the arc, and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line.
