We will be creating two projects. One that is inspired by Wayne Thiebaud and one that is of a contemporary ‘pop art’ style. The difference will be that you will be working on the projects simultaneously.

Step 1. Complete the handout with your possible compositions. Based on the pastries on the tables. Decide which one you like the best and make a finalized sketch in the space provided.

Symmetrical

Asymmetrical

Radial Final composition sketch with color.

Step 2. Have Ms. Abrams take a photograph of the pastries placed the way you plan on painting.

(I have brown eyes, FYI)

Step 3. draw your composition on the watercolor paper.

Step 4. Starting with your background, start to build up your watercolor.

(I forgot to take a picture before I started painting the cupcakes and cherries. The very first thing to paint is just the table and the background.)

Step 5. As you need to wait for your watercolor layers to dry (remember do not paint next to and edge that is wet) you need to start on your contemporary piece. Using the color copy I give you as well as transfer paper draw the lines onto your watercolor paper (this is a specific paper I will give you). PRESS LIGHTLY!

Place the transfer paper black side down on your watercolor paper.Place your color copy on top of the transfer paper. Go over the lines to transfer the image.

Step 6. Using a scrap piece of paper to test on, try and mix the EXACT colors on your color print out and paint in the corresponding triangle. You might need many layers to build up to a color.

Step 7: Continue to paint of both pieces, allowing dry time.

You need to work in layers!

Frosting….

Step 8. When your Thiebaud watercolor is done, begin to use color pencil to accent graded value, add pops of contrasting color in shadows as well as some edges. Refer to your color pencil techniques that you learned…color overlay, burnishing, etc.

Step 9: On your contemporary painting add an outline of your pastry using the transfer paper again. You may add some color pencil if you would like.

Things to think about…

- Do you want to create a certain mood?

- Sweet

- Sinister

- Humorous

- How are you going to use color and value to achieve that mood?

- How are you going to balance your composition?

- From what point of view are you going to create the painting?

- What will be the focal point? How will you make it the focal point?

- How can you use color like Wayne Thiebaud to make colors pop? To dull certain colors too?
