2017 WILDCAT SEASON PREVIEW Wayne State College looks to rebound from its fi rst losing season in 18 years. Last season, the Wildcats were 15-28 overall and placed ninth in the NSIC with a 12-16 league mark. WSC was just 1-8 in games decided by one run and 2-3 in two-run games, going 3-11 in close games decided by two runs or less. The Wildcats return four starters and 15 letter winners from an offense last season that ranked fourth in the NSIC with a .331 batting average, but the WSC pitching staff looks for a better year after ranking 12th in the league with a team earned run average of 8.22 after being third two years ago at 4.58. Third year head coach Alex Koch, who is 42-52 overall and 34-30 in NSIC games, says the biggest improvement for this season needs to come from the mound. “We went from third to12th in one year on the mound – it will be better,” commented Koch. “Coach Clark has put a lot of emphasis on our pitchers work ethic and how they go about their business. I believe we are mentally stronger and just all around more prepared as a staff this year. And it helps that everyone is healthy for the most part.” Top returners offensively include seniors Aaron Krier, Cody Jenkins and Bodie Cooper. Krier (pictured above right) posted a team-best .392 batting average last season

as a utility player at second base and right fi eld and ended last season with a 15-game hitting streak. He will start this sea-son in center fi eld. Jenkins (pictured left) started all but one game last season at third base and record-ed a .337 average, ranking third on the team in hits (55) while produc-

ing 13 doubles, fi ve homers and 29 RBI. Cooper moves from left fi eld to catcher this season after hitting 11 homers with 39 RBI last year while starting all 43 games. Other key returners offensively include junior Tanner Simons, a .315 hitter last season with 13 doubles and 32 runs scored, junior infi elder Brandon Fowler, who hit .321 in 26 starts last season and senior outfi elder Chris May, a .283 hitter with two homers and 16 RBI last season as a backup outfi elder last season. Mainstays back on the Wildcat pitching staff include se-niors Joey Lenihan and Taner Ledezma. Lenihan, a Wayne native, led WSC in appearances last year with 18 coming out of the bullpen, going 0-2 with three saves and a 5.75 ERA. He notched 25 strikeouts in just 20 1/3 innings pitcher. Ledezma is the top returning starter after going 3-4 last year with a 6.20 ERA, striking out 46 batters in 49 innings of work. The Wildcat pitching staff will be bolstered by two promi-nent newcomers this year. Senior Bobby St. Pierre transfers to WSC from Madonna Univeristy and has been tabbed Wayne State’s Pitcher to Watch in the NSIC this season. The 6-3, 225 pounder notched 24 saves in 43 appearances

in two seasons at Madonna with a 1.48 ERA, helping the team reach the NAIA World Series last season. Breedlove is a 5-10, 155 pound freshman from Omaha Westside that was 9-0 as a junior, named Second Team All-Nebraska while playing in the American Legion World Series. “Bobby St. Pierre and Aiden Breedlove will both have key roles in the starting rotation for us this year,” said Koch. “Offensively, transfer David Janes will be big for us. He showed a consistent bat in the fall and the versatility to play many different positions for us on the fi eld.” Wayne S ta te i s scheduled to open the 2017 season on Sat-urday, February 18th in a three-game series at Newman in Kansas. The Wildcats also face Midwest region fi nalist Missouri S&T, ranked 35th in the Col-legiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Coaches’ Poll, along with games against William Jewell in other non-conference games. The Wildcats also face three NSIC schools in non-conference games March 9 and 11 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, battling Minot State, Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State. “Our non-conference schedule will be a challenge for us this year,” added Coach Koch. “We open the year again at

Newman and we also travel to Missouri S&T, who may be one of the best teams we see all year.” Wayne State was picked to finish eighth in the 2017 NSIC Pre-season Baseball Coach-es Poll released on Jan-uary 25th. Three teams from the NSIC last year qualifi ed for the NCAA Central Regional – regu-lar season champion Minnesota Duluth, tour-

nament champion St. Cloud State and Minnesota State. Min-nesota State and St. Cloud State are ranked 16th and 17th respectively in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll. “Our main goal this year is to just be playing our best baseball once conference games start,” remarked Coach Koch. “This is a deep league with many good teams in it. If we have a chance of making some noise in the conference we will have to be playing some of our best baseball from start to fi nish of the conference season.” The Wildcats open their home schedule on Saturday, March 18th hosting Minot State in the NSIC opener at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.

THE NORTHERN SUN

INTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE

From its modest origin as a six-team alliance over eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 16-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affi liation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, Au-gustana College in 2008 and Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls in 2012. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In 1992 the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affi liates became certifi ed for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1995, its member institutions fi lled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualifi ed student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 83rd season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning 16 national titles since 2006. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories. Concordia University launched an ongoing streak of seven consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 fi nish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010 the Golden Bear extended that NCAA record win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title. In 2011, after overcoming midseason injuries, the Golden Bears hit their stride. The Golden Bears knocked off No. 1 and undefeated Cal State San Bernardino to become the fi rst team in the history of NCAA Division II women’s volleyball, to captured a fi fth consecutive NCAA Division II Championship. Then in 2012, the Golden Bears again made a late season and championship match surge as they defeated Tampa 3-2 after trailing 0-2 to win their sixth straight NCAA DII Volleyball National Championship. In 2013 Concordia-St. Paul won the NSIC regular season title, but was defeated in the NSIC Tournament Championship by Minnesota Duluth. But from there the Golden Bears ripped off six straight NCAA postseason wins, extending their streak to 42, on their way to a 3-0 sweep of BYU-Hawaii to win another NCAA National Championship. In a most surprising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a fi eld of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Two years later, in 2010, the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the fi rst NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records. Minnesota State added more luster to the league by fi nishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game. Augustana College got into the mix of national championships in 2011 when their women’s cross country team turned in a true team performance in Spokane, Wash. All fi ve Viking runners earned All-American status as Augustana won the fi rst cross country national championship in NSIC history. After multiple runnerup fi nishes, the St. Cloud State Huskies fi nally captured the national championship in wrestling in 2015 and repeated again in 2016. The Augustana men’s basketball team won their fi rst-ever NCAA Division II national title in 2016 for the league’s 16th national championship. The NSIC has also had 10 athletes awarded with the NCAA Elite 89 Award on 12 occasions.
