A Kennesaw State University leadership exchange with India is opening students' eyes tointernational cooperation and bringing together professors across disciplines at Georgia's third largestuniversity.

Two Kennesaw students - born in Brazil and Nigeria - were chosen last year to travel to India withfaculty to meet with students and educators at five universities.

The team's research would form the foundation for an annual exchange between the two countries, allowing students from both countries to learn about global leadership.

Launched by Kennesaw's Center for Student Leadership, the program has been closely influencedby its ties with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, a major foreign-policythink tank in Washington.

To determine where students should focus, the Center for Student Leadership considered the "sevenrevolutions" CSIS believes will affect the future of global integration. Among them are population, naturalresources, knowledge, health care and more, said Brian Wooten, director of the center.

Since these issues collide most dynamically in emerging markets, the center has focused on buildingrelationships in the so-called BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China.

"We've already been working with China, so India provided us the opportunity then to begin to explorenew dimensions, new ways of connection," Mr. Wooten said.

To open the door to India, he turned to Rifka Mayani, associate director at Kennesaw State's enterprisesystems and services technology group . Ms. Mayani, a Mumbai native who has lived in the U.S. formore than 15 years, tapped family connections to connect the group with a mix of universities includingSt. Xavier's College, HR College of Commerce and Economics, Sophia College, NirmalaNiketan and the Narsi Monjee Institute of Management Studies.

Taking Georgia students to India Sept 1-10last year exposed them to a completely newculture and taught them how to engage witha future economic powerhouse, Ms. Mayanitold GlobalAtlanta. In between the collegevisits, the students and accompanyingfaculty members visited temples, mosquesand churches for an overview of the city'scultural and religious diversity. They alsojoined Ms. Mayani's family for dinner and ataste of Indian hospitality.

"Given that it's the second largestpopulation in the world, you're going to turnaround and meet an Indian somewhere,"she said, adding that Indian studentscoming to Atlanta will have a similareye-opening experience.

India was even better than advertised, saidBrazil native and Kennesaw Statealumna Juliana Rocha, who along with IfeAmajor, a business student majoring infinance, was chosen to provide researchhelp on the trip.

During her stay in the country, Ms. Rochatalked with Indian students and faculty todetermine what they wanted to glean from apotential partnership with Kennesaw State.

"I've actually had the opportunity to visitother places like Australia and China, andthis trip to India completely blew my mind, for lack of better words, in terms of what I expected to seeand what I did see when I was there," she said. "It's a whole new world."

She was particularly awed by the country's religious diversity, as well as its unique sights and smells, she said.

Beyond building cultural competency in student leaders, the program has led to collaboration in otherdisciplines, said Nancy Prochaska, assistant chair of Coles College's Department of Management andEntrepreneurship.

After the leadership team's initial visit, HR College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai sent ateam of economists-in-training to Kennesaw. They inspired a team from Coles College to participate inan annual competition at HR where aspiring experts present papers recommending fixes for troubledeconomies.

"Seeing them here really sparked the flame that maybe we really could do that and reciprocate," Dr.Prohaska said.

The Kennesaw team members will have its work cut out for them at this "Olympics of the economicworld," she said. The competition is in its 19th year and draws entrants from many nations.

Wayne, I wanted to take a moment to brag on your team. This is the second week of our start up on the new Facilities management system and we have over 100 customer requests in AiM and almost 400 work orders with only 5 workdesk tickets. That speaks to the caliber of the project team that was in charge of the implementation. Elizabeth Starnes, Matt Balaun, Rifka Mayani, Michael Haynes and Plant’s own David Van Hook were the critical ingredients to the smooth transition into a new system that will play a key role in the Universities data infrastructure and operational excellence. As much as I have worked to secure a system of this type for our department and the University, I never dreamed that we would experience such a whole-hearted embrace of it’s potential and I credit Rifka and Elizabeth with not only recognizing the power of integrating this into the enterprise systems on campus but wrestling many of the obstacles to the ground. There is still a lot of work to be done in that arena, but we are poised to wring every bit of potential out of this investment. There are many players that have contributed to this effort, but your implementation team gave us the best possible foundation for this start.
