Leider gibt es zwei kurzfris­tige Änderungen zu vermelden. Zum einen hat die französische Band Cheveu aus „persönlichen Gründen“ ihre Teilnahme am Fes­tival absagen müssen. Und zum anderen fallen Maur Due & Lichter krankheitsbedingt aus. Ihren Platz als erster Act der Las Vegas Re­cords Night – zum achtjährigen Jubiläum des Labels im Heuer – übernehmen ihre Landsleute Léyya, die somit für Dawa und Kommando Elefant eröff nen.

Unfortunately, we have to an-nounce two changes at short notice. The French band Cheveu had to cancel their concert at the festival due to „personal reasons“. Furthermore, Maur Due & Lichter won’t be able to perform due to illness. Their opening slot at the Las Vegas Records Night – cele-brating the 8th anniversary of the label at Heuer – will be taken over by Léyya, who will now kick off the evening before Dawa and Kommando Elefant.

Die vierte Ausgabe von Waves Vi­enna bringt viele Neuerungen. Im Anschluss an das Waves Film Fest, das in Gartenbaukino, Schikaneder und Top Kino stattfand, wurde gestern die Festivalzentrale in der Alten Post mit der Opening­Party – nach einem großartigen Auftritt von Scott Matthew im Konzert­haus – eingeweiht. Heute kommen weitere neue Venues dazu und die Waves Conference wird gemein­sam mit und an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst statt fi nden. Also Leinen los und auf zu neuen Ufern! The 4th edition of Waves Vienna brings many in-novations. Following the Waves Film Fest, which took place at Gartenbaukino, Schikaneder, and Top Kino, the festival centre at Alte Post was inaugurated with the opening party last night – af-ter a fantastic gig by Scott Mat-thew at Konzerthaus. Today, more new venues will open their doors for you and the Waves Conference will take place at and in coopera-tion with the University of Music and Performing Arts. So set the sails, let’s explore new shores!

HigHligHTs 02.10.

Waves Vienna quillt auch dieses Jahr wieder nur so über vor guten Bands, die von euch entdeckt werden wollen. Wir geben hier unsere Empfehlungen ab, die man bei Lust und Laune natürlich gerne erweitern kann – und sollte. Den Donnerstag kann man bereits um 18 Uhr beim Red Bull Brandwagen einläuten. Da startet mit Us Lights auch die erste von zahlreichen Österreich­premieren. Sphärischer Pop zum gemütlichen Ein­stimmen auf den Konzertabend. Etwas vertrackter wird es bei Mlat aus Kroatien. Und wenn man dann schon mal in experimentierfreudiger Stimmung ist, kann man gleich weiter zu einem der Highlights ins Flex wandern: Girl Band aus Irland. Die vier Jungs putzen die Gehörgänge mit ihrem Noise­Punk so richtig durch. Dann kann man entweder bei den fan­tastischen Nerven bleiben oder weiterwandern zur Warner Music Night mit Kwabs. Der ist die große Soul­Entdeckung des letzten Jahres. Und weil es im Porgy & Bess so schön ist, bietet es sich an, gleich bei den Hamburgern von Rakede zu verweilen. Wer da noch nicht zum Tanzen gekommen ist – warum auch immer – kann zwischendurch bei Sopot aus Bosnien und Herzegowina auf seine Kosten kommen. Sie ver­zwirbeln Drum & Bass mit allen anderen Genres, die Spaß machen, Hauptsache die Beine schwingen mit. Bei Mieze Medusa & Tenderboy kann man dann zu Hip­Hop­Beats tanzen oder einfach nur den feinen Texten zuhören. Alternativ gibt es ausgelassenen Surf­Pop von Soda Fabric oder guten, alten Indie­ Rock von Jonathan aus Kroatien. Zwischendurch sollte man übrigens unbedingt die Rave Tram entern. Für Nachtschwärmer geht es mit Manu Delago in der großen Halle im Brut weiter und mit Andaka – bis 4 Uhr – in der Brut Bar. Dann ist aber auch wieder gut. Waves Vienna hat immerhin erst begonnen!

Once again, Waves Vienna is brimming over with great bands ready to be discovered by you. We have a number of recommendations, but your personal line-up can – and should, actually – be extended.Already at 6 pm, you can kick off your Thursday evening at the Red Bull Brandwagen: Us Lights will be the first of many Austrian premieres. Spherical pop to get in the right mood for a night full of con-certs. The Croatian act Mlat is a little trickier – and once you’re attuned to experimental music, you should make your way over to Flex for one of our highlights: Girl Band from Ireland. With their noise punk, the four lads will make your eardrums quiver. Afterwards, you can either stay there and enjoy the wonderful band Die Nerven, or move on to the Warner Music Night with Kwabs, last year’s big breakthrough act in the soul scene. And since it’s so nice at Porgy & Bess, it makes sense to stay a bit longer and watch the gig of Rakede, from Ham-burg. Anyone who won’t yet have had the chance to dance at that point – for whatever reason – can get their money’s worth at the performance of So-pot, from Bosnia and Herzegovina. They mix drum & bass with any fun genre; the main thing is that feet and hips move along. At the Mieze Medusa & Tenderboy show, you can then dance to hip hop beats or simply listen to the amazing lyrics. Alter-natively, there is Soda Fabric with energetic surf pop or the Croatian act Jonathan with good old indie rock. At some point you should definitely board the Rave Tram, by the way. For the night owls amongst you: Manu Delago will play a late night show at the big hall at Brut and Andeka is going to spin records at Brut Bar till 4 am. And that’s it for day one. After all, Waves Vienna has only just begun!

Warner Music lädt am Donnerstag im Porgy & Bess zur Warner Music Night und holt dafür vier hervor­ragende Gäste nach Wien. Den Anfang macht Alexa Feser, die mit ihren Pianoballaden das Publikum zum Schmelzen bringen wird. In ihrer Jugend hat­te sie zwar als DJ angefangen, doch schon bald das Klavier und ihre Stimme entdeckt. Nun arbeitet sie mit Andreas Herbig zusammen, der unter anderem schon Deichkind, Jochen Distelmeyer und Ich + Ich produziert hat.Darauf folgt Y’akoto. Die junge Hamburgerin mit ghanaischen Wurzeln verbindet Soul, Blues und Folk zu einer fesselnden Mischung. Genau richtig, um in den Groove des Abends zu kommen. Manche nen­nen ihre Musik „Soul Seeking Music“. Wer also auf der Suche nach Soul ist, ist auf der Warner Music Night sicher nicht falsch. Denn der nächste Künstler steht dem Soul auch sehr nahe. Kwabs aus London hat die perfekte Stimme für herzzerfetzende Songs, die dem Soul einen frischen Anstrich geben. Zu verdanken hat Kwabs das unter anderem seinen Produzenten, zu denen sich beispielsweise der Elektronik­Zauberer Sohn und Hit­Garant Plan B zählen. Die ersten Sing­les „Last Stand“ und „Wrong Or Right“ haben das Internet bereits gehörig in Aufruhr versetzt. Kwabs ist mit Sicherheit ein Geheimtipp, von dem wir noch viel zu hören bekommen werden. Spätestens wenn er sein Debütalbum im Frühjahr veröffentlicht. Den Abschluss der Warner Music Night machen Rakede. Die vier Triebwerke der Rakede werden von Jungs besetzt, die sich von Dubstep, Reggae, Hip­Hop und Metal inspirieren lassen. Genau so abgefahren und energiegeladen wie sich das liest, klingt es auch. Also noch mal richtig abgehen und in die Menge werfen, bevor sich die Nacht im Porgy & Bess dem Ende zuneigt.

On Tuesday, Warner Music invites you to the Warner Music Night at Porgy & Bess, where four outstand-ing acts will be performing. First act of the night will be Alexa Feser, who will make the audience melt away with her piano ballads. Although she started out as a DJ in her youth, she quickly discovered the piano and her voice. She’s currently working with Andreas Herbig, who produced acts such as Deich-kind, Jochen Distelmeyer, and Ich + Ich in the past.Next up: Y’akoto. The young musician from Ham-burg with roots in Ghana combines soul, blues, and folk to create a captivating mix. The perfect stuff to get in the right mood for the evening. Some call her music “soul seeking music”; so those of you who’re looking for soul should definitely check her out.The next artist has a close relationship to soul music as well. The Londoner Kwabs has the perfect voice for heartbreaking songs that bring something new and innovative to soul. And Kwabs also has to thank his producers – the electronic wiz Sohn or hit guar-antor Plan B, for instance – for that. The first singles,

“Last Stand” and “Wrong Or Right”, have already caused quite a stir on the internet. Kwabs is defi-nitely one of those up and coming acts we’ll hear a lot of in the future, especially once his debut album is out next spring. Last but not least: Rakede. The band is powered by four lads who get their inspira-tion from dubstep, reggae, hip hop, and metal. And they sound just as crazy and energetic as that reads. The final chance to go wild before the Warner Music Night at Porgy & Bess comes to an end.

gasTlanD KrOaTienWaves Vienna bringt Bands aus aller Welt nach Wien. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dieses Jahr auf Kroatien, das viel mehr kann, als ein beliebtes Ur­laubsziel zu sein. Den Beweis treten fünf Bands aus Hrvatska an, die klar machen, wie stark die Szene in diesem Mittelmeerland gewachsen ist.Bereits am Donnerstag kann man bei den Noise­Punkern Vlasta Popić am Red Bull Brandwagen den Kopf schütteln und die Arme schwingen. Der raue Sound erinnert mal an Sonic Youth, mal an Black Flag. Dementsprechend hart und schräg ist der Output. Großartig! Wer es vielleicht aber eher vertrackt und schwierig mag, schaut – etwa zur selben Zeit – ins Elysium. Da geben uns Mlat eine Lehrstunde in Sachen Math­Rock. Lasst euch sagen, dass es sich lohnen wird, denn ein paar Takt­ und Tempowechsel haben noch nie geschadet. Wie man das alles mit Indie­Rock vermischt, verstehen die vier Jungs ebenso. Gleich darauf bleibt man am besten im Elysium, denn mit Punčke folgt die nächste kroatische Band. Die drei Mädels wollen nicht wirklich in Schubladen gesteckt werden, doch das Label Rock drücken wir ihnen jetzt mal ganz allgemein auf, denn rocken können sie auf alle Fälle. Den letzten Slot im Elysium belegen Jonathan, die zu fünft großen Indie­Rock à la frühe Editors und White Lies auf die Bühne holen. Den letzten kroa­tischen Act gibt es dann am Samstag im Xpedit Lager zu sehen. Irena Zilic beweist, dass Kroatien neben harten Gitarren, auch Gefühl zeigen kann. Ohne natürlich Energie zu verlieren. Zilic nennt Ben Howard und Norah Jones als Einfl üsse. Dement­sprechend gefühlvoll sind auch ihre Songs. Eine Reise nach Kroatien lohnt sich also nicht nur we­gen der Meeresluft, sondern auch um interessante Musik zu entdecken.

Waves Vienna brings bands from all over the world to Vienna. One special focus this year is on Croatia, a country that has much more to off er than just be-ing a popular holiday destination. Five bands from Hrvatska will prove how much the scene in the Medi-terranean country has developed.Already on Thursday you can bang your head and move your feet at the gig of the noise punks Vlas-ta Popić at the Red Bull Brandwagen. Their rough sound is reminiscent of sometimes Sonic Youth, sometimes Black Flag. The output is hence hard and weird. Fantastic!But if you prefer something more sophisticated and complicated, you should head to Elysium at about the same time. Mlat will be teaching a lesson in math rock there. Let me tell you, it will be worth your while, a few changes in tempo have never hurt anyone. And the four guys also know how to combine it all with indie rock.Afterwards you best stay at Elysium, because the next Croatian band will perform right after: Punčke. The three girls don’t really like to be pigeon-holed, but since they really know how to rock, it’s probably fair to say they’re a rock act.The last gig at Elysium will be played by the quintet Jonathan, who make grand indie rock à la Editors or White Lies. Our fi nal act from Croatia will perform on Saturday at Xpedit Lager. Irena Zilic is living proof that, apart from hard guitars, her home coun-try also has emotions to off er; without losing power, of course. Zilic names Ben Howard and Norah Jones as infl uences and so it’s no surprise that her songs are soulful. Note: a trip to Croatia pays off not just because of the sea air, but also because one can dis-cover interesting music there.

Das österreichische Indie­Label Las Vegas Records feiert sein achtjähriges Bestehen und lädt am 2. Ok­tober im Rahmen von Waves Vienna zu einem Show­case ins Heuer am Karlsplatz. Aufspielen werden drei Acts des Labels: Léyya springen kurzfristig für Maur Due & Lichter ein. Weiters spielt die Akustik­Folk­Rock­Band Dawa auf. Zwei Stimmen, Akustikgitarre, Cello und Schlagwerk – mit diesen Utensilien zau­bern Dawa folkige Songs, die eine Bandbreite von ruhig /emotional bis hin zu etwas lauter / wütender abdecken. Kommando Elefant wiederum vereinen Indie­Pop mit ein bisschen Synthies und texten dazu noch clevere Lyrics, die Humor mit ein bisschen Sys­temkritik verbinden.

The Austrian indie label Las Vegas Records is cele-brating its 8th anniversary and, in the course of Waves Vienna, invites you to a showcase at Heuer at the Karlsplatz on October 2nd. Three acts of the la-bel will be performing: Léyya are taking the slot of Maur Due & Lichter who had to cancel their gig. In addition, the acoustic folk rock band Dawa will play a set. Two voices, acoustic guitar, cello, and drums

– with these instruments, Dawa create folky songs ranging from calm / emotional to loud / angry. Kom-mando Elefant, by contrast, combine fi ne indie pop with some synths and, on top of that, write clever lyrics that are both humorous and critical.

Unsere Freunde von Introducing Israel machen ihren Namen am Donnerstag im Elysium 1 zum Pro­gramm. Sie stellen eine Auswahl der besten israeli­schen Bands vor und zeigen uns, was sich im Nahen Osten musikalisch so abspielt.Dass sich ein Abstecher oder sogar ein ganz­er Abend im Elysium 1 lohnen wird, beweisen sogleich auch die Opener Isaiah. Angefangen bei der Instrumentierung – griechische Laute triff t auf Folk­Gitarren und Afro­Beats – hin zu den Einfl üs­sen aus der Folk­Geschichte, sind Isaiah eine der außergewöhnlichsten Bands des Festivalabends. Manchmal hört man die Beatles, manchmal Simon & Garfunkel heraus. Das alles zur Primetime um 20:15 Uhr. Als nächstes kann man zu Tamar Antler tanzen. Oder sagen wir besser swingen, denn Ant­ler ist von Swing beeinfl usst und holt diesen erfolg­reich mit zahlreichen elektronischen Erweiterungen in die 2010er­Jahre. Dabei klingt sie manchmal wie Destroyer mit mehr Augenmerk auf elektronische Beats und manchmal wie Parov Stelar. Eine elektri­fi zierende Mischung, die mit Sicherheit das ein oder andere Tanzbein in Bewegung versetzen wird.Den Abschluss im Elysium 1 machen Soda Fabric, die wohl direkt am Strand geboren wurden, anders kann man sich diesen sonnigen Surf­Pop nicht er­klären. Okay wahrscheinlich hören die vier Jungs einfach nur gerne The Drums oder Surfer Blood – ist ja eigentlich egal. Hauptsache, die Musik ist gut und macht Spaß und beides lässt sich nicht bestreiten. Leider scheint um 23 Uhr abends keine Sonne mehr, sonst hätten wir sie natürlich direkt in der Strandbar spielen lassen. Ein eklektischer Abend geht damit zu Ende, der einen kleinen Einblick in die facetten­reiche Musikszene Israels gibt.

Our friends from Introducing Israel will do their name justice at Elysium 1 on Thursday. They will present a selection of great Israeli bands and show us what the Near East has to off er in terms of music. Already the opening act Isaiah proves that a quick visit or maybe even an entire evening at Elysium 1 will be worth your while. From the instrumentation – bouzouki meets folk guitar and afro beats – to infl u-ences from folk history: Isaiah are one of the most outstanding bands of the festival evening. At times you can hear The Beatles, at times Simon & Garfun-kel. And all that at prime time at 8:15 pm. Right after that, you can dance along to Tamar Antler. Or, to be more precise, swing along; because she draws on swing music and, with various electronic modifi ca-tions, updates it. Sometimes her music sounds like Destroyer with a greater focus on electronic beats, sometimes like Parov Stelar. An electrifying mix that will defi nitely get some legs shaking.The fi nal act to perform at Elysium 1 is Soda Fabric, who must have been born right on the beach. That’s the only reasonable explanation for their sunny surf pop. Okay, the four guys probably just like to lis-ten to The Drums or Surfer Blood – doesn’t really matter anyway as long as the music is good and gets you in a jolly mood; and that’s the case. Un-fortunately, the sun won’t be up at 11 pm, otherwise we would let them play directly at the beach bar. And with that, an eclectic evening that provided a glimpse into the diverse music scene of Israel will come to an end.

Neben Kroatien und Israel liegt ein weiterer Schwer­punkt am Donnerstag auf dem Südosten Europas. Das Elysium 3 hält dafür als Zentrale her und ver­spricht den ganzen Abend Musik, die man sonst nicht allzu oft in Wien zu hören bekommt. Wie zum Beispiel Ana Curcin aus Serbien. Die junge Song­writerin hat sich Folk und Americana verschrieben. Sie versteht es, intime Songs mit ausgefeilten Tex­ten und träumerischen Melodien zu verfassen, die so ergreifend sind – man möchte sich am liebsten mit ihnen ein Bett teilen und den ganzen Tag nur mit ihnen schmusen. Die nächste Band spielt zwar an diesem Abend auch nur akustisch und kommt eben­falls aus Serbien, liegt aber musikalisch Welten von Ana Curcins Folk entfernt. VVhile krachen normaler­weise mit noisigem Rock, der an die Japandroids oder No Age erinnert. Das bedeutet: verzerrte und verhallte Gitarren mit melodischem Gesang und auf den Punkt gebrachten Drums. Doch in Wien wird die Band diese Mischung auf die Akustikgitarre übertra­gen. Wie das ausgeht, sollte man am besten selber um 21:00 Uhr im Elysium 3 herausfi nden. Die näch­ste und letzte Band des Discover­Southeast­Europe­Abends nennt sich Sopot und kommt aus Bosnien und Herzegowina. Die Mischung aus Drum & Bass, Reggae, Dub und Electro­Rock liest sich genau so verrückt, wie sie klingt, und genau das macht sie so besonders. Die Musik bleibt trotzdem stets tanzbar und macht richtig Laune. Wer also Lust darauf hat, sich die Beine abzutanzen, kann um 22:30 Uhr ins Elysium 3 schauen und sich selbst davon überzeu­gen, wie Südosteruopa im Jahr 2014 klingt. Drei von Grund auf unterschiedliche Bands, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte, denn so schnell sieht man diese Vielfalt an einem Abend nicht wieder in Wien.

In addition to Croatia and Israel, Southeastern Eu-rope will be a third main topic on Thursday. Ely-sium  3 will function as the location and provide an evening of music you usually don’t get to hear in Vi-enna that often. The Serbian Ana Curcin, for instance. The young songwriter dedicated herself to folk and Americana. She has a gift for writing intimate songs with sophisticated lyrics and dreamy melodies that are so moving you just want to share a bed with them and cuddle all day. Although the next band that evening also plays an acoustic set and comes from Serbia, musically they are worlds apart from Ana Curcin’s folk. VVhile usually bang with noisy rock reminiscent of Japandroids or No Age. That means: distorted and reverberating guitars with melodic vo-cals and tight drumming. But in Vienna, the band will translate this mix onto acoustic guitars. You should fi nd out for yourself how that will work out at 9 pm at Elysium 3. The next and last band of the Discover Southeast Europe evening is called Sopot and comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their combination of drum & bass, reggae, dub, and electro rock reads as crazy as it sounds and that’s what makes them so special. Nevertheless, they’re danceable and great fun. So if you feel like dancing your butt off , head over to Elysium 3 at 10:30 pm and see for yourself what Southeastern Europe sounds like in the year 2014. Three absolutely diff erent bands you shouldn’t miss, because you won’t get this kind of diversity in Vienna any time soon.
