What is a WAVE?A disturbance that travels through space and time, usually accompanied by the transfer of energy.
Crest and Trough:CREST – maximum value or upward displacement within a cycle.
TROUGH – minimum or lowest point in a cycle.
Crests and Troughs
Amplitude:Magnitude of changeOscillation- repetitive variationMeasure of energy transferred
Equilibrium PositionAlso known as rest position.
WavelengthDistance between one point on a wave to
the identical point in the next wave in the series.
(ex. Crest to crest, trough to trough) Represented by greek symbol λ (lamda)
Characteristics of a wavelength:FREQUENCY- how often the particles of the
medium vibrate when a wave passes through the medium
- temporal frequency - Hertz (Hz) or cycles per secondPERIOD- the time needed for each particle to
complete one full wave movement.
Types of waves:LONGITUDINAL WAVE- parallel to the
direction of wave propagation.
- move backward and forward along the
direction in which the wave is travelling.
TRANSVERSE WAVE- perpendicular to the direction of wave
propagation. - propagating from left
to right. - the particles do not
move along with the wave -oscillate up and
down
Longitudinal and Transverse Waves
Classifications of wave:MECHANICAL- also known as material wave. - needs a medium to travel. - ex. ocean waves, and sound waves - requires initial energy input. Types: Transverse, Longitudinal, and Surface
waves.
ELECTROMAGNETIC- require no medium but can travel through one.
-can travel not only through air and solid materials, but also through the vacuum of space.
Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic RadiationOften abbreviated as E-M radiation or EMRForm of energy that exhibits wave-like behavior as
it travels through space.Has both electric and magnetic field components.Classified according to the frequency of its wave.Carries energy and momentum that may be
imparted to matter with which it interacts.Increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength.Consists of radio waves, micro waves, infrared
radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.
