WRPC Fall Church Retreat Friday, November 1—

Sunday, November 3, 2019 Holston Presbytery Camp & Retreat Center

Banner Elk, NC Come discover what it means to be a good neighbor! From the inspiration and teachings of Presbyterian minister Fred Rogers we will explore what it means to be "neighborly" - to truly love our neighbors as ourselves the way Jesus has instructed us to live. Start and end times and schedule to be determined closer to. Please sign up on the website using the link for "tickets" below or on the clipboard in the gathering space at WRPC. https://waverlyroadpc.org/forms/?fbclid=IwAR0xSu4sFI9E4rbNA7n9UX9rSh0xgcGJKBzFb0HK8HLHIskU4kHsv_ZWA7o

The cost of the retreat is $100 per adult in Guenther Lodge and $80 per adult in the Cabins. Children and

youth are free.

Our Stephen Ministers are taught with advice on how to value the needs of others by really listening to what they are saying, both in words and in actions. When we listen, we elevate the feelings and needs of others above our own and value them for who they really are. People like to be understood. Come learn some tips on how to understand what others are saying by sharpening your listening skills.

The transition to the shorter and busier days of fall can be a challenge. To help ease the change, we’ve put together 15 Autumn Wellness Tips to get you ready for the colder months and keep your mental (and physical!) health in check.

1) Start taking a Vitamin D supplement. We get most of our Vitamin D from the sun, so our intake decreases when the weather is colder since we spend most of our time inside during the fall/winter seasons. If you find you are not getting outside much, a Vitamin D supplement can boost your mood and immune system!

2) Take some time for yourself. Autumn and winter are the Earth’s way of telling us to slow down. Start a journal or track your moods to get more in touch with how your feeling.

3) Get your flu shot and yearly check-up. Self explanatory! No one likes sniffling and aching and sneezing and coughing getting in the way of life. Yuck.

4) Boost your immune system. You can do this by drinking plenty of water, washing your hands often to prevent sickness, and eating nutritious foods.

5) Get yourself ready for Daylight Savings Time. Go to bed earlier when you can, especially the week before the clocks change. Longer periods of darkness = longer periods of sleep! Don’t forget to change any manual clocks (like an alarm clock!)

6) Make some plans for the cold months. In the winter, we tend to hibernate if we don’t have things to keep us busy.

7) Moisturize your skin. Harsh temperatures can make your skin dry. Also, you still should be wearing sun-screen.

8) Buy in-season food. Beets, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, kale, pumpkin, broths, roasted squash, roots and sautéed dark leafy greens are all great choices.

9) Stay active! It can be easy to just sit around all the time, but it’s important to get in some movement throughout the day. Raking leaves or shoveling snow counts! (continued on back page)

Report from Peter Lodal, Food Pantry Director: For the first three quarters of 2019, the Food Pantry has served 1,461 bags and 4,439 people. (162 bags and 493 people per month on average) Compared to 2018, the numbers are 1,691 bags and 5,189 people, a 12% year-over-year decrease. Financially, we began the year with $22,822.74 in the Food Pantry Account. As of 9/30/19, this has decreased to 11,372.90. This total includes the first half of the FEMA grant we were awarded, which is $1,303 of $2,606 total.

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes It’s that time of year when we are collecting Shoebox Gifts for Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.

We’re doing something a little different this year! We will be collecting items to assemble Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. If you would like to bring in a few items some of our families with young children will be assembling the boxes on Nov. 6th during the WOW programming time. The items we will need will be on notecards in the narthex Sunday morning.

The criteria of what can be placed in the boxes has changed. If you are not sure about what to put in your box, click on these links:

15 Autumn Wellness Tips, cont’d. 10) Wear layers and protect your body from the dropping temperature. Make sure you have gloves, a scarf, ear muffs, a winter coat, warm socks, and snow boots!

11) Do some “spring cleaning” in the fall. Clean out your closet, organize that back room, and rid yourself of things you don’t need.

12) Prepare your home for possible extreme weather con-ditions. Do you have a shovel and/or snow blower? Do your flashlights have batteries? Is your heat working okay?

13) Get some books to read and shows to watch. Who doesn’t want to sit by the fire on chilly winter nights and read a good book or binge-watch some Netflix?

Just don’t get too engrossed… make sure to shower and change your clothes!

14) Keep a schedule. The cold months can seem to drag on and push us into isolation. Stay on track by scheduling time in your day to do things you like to do.

15) Be kind to yourself. The holidays can cause weight gain, the shorter days can cause low mood, and the flu season can cause sickness. Listen to your body and give it what it needs, and don’t beat yourself up! Try reframing negative thoughts into positive ones.
