WE’vE coME a lonG Way

If you are a surfer of a certain age, you won’t need me to tell you how much wetsuits have improved in recent years. The days of walking like John Cleese down the beach because your body is covered in restrictive neoprene are over. Zips that jam up with salt because you haven’t been in the water for a couple of weeks, and then break because you pull them too hard – no more. Itchy rash vests that were necessary to prevent your skin coming off when you paddled out – no longer needed. Necks that were tight enough to give you the ‘hanged-look’ neck rash, but not tight enough to stop cold water rushing in – vastly improved. Winter wetsuits actually keep you warm in the coldest

seas nowadays, and summer suits give you the flexibility to surf like the grom you used to be. If you haven’t updated your wetsuit in the last two years, the improvements you’ll notice even in that short time are mind-blowing. In fact, the only problem I’ve noticed with wetsuit advancements, is that each time I invest in a new one, for some bizarre reason, it seems to make me look fatter.

When it came to wetsuits, we wanted something warmer, more flexible, better fitting and tough enough to withstand extended use. Looking to what divers, sailors and fishermen had been using all these years to stay warm, in and on the ocean, we tried wool. For comfort and performance, we blend merino wool with polyester, and it’s this merino/polyester blend lining that gives our wetsuits their added warmth without added rubber.
