Guidelines for visitorsThe public is invited to
take an active interest in “Thunder in the Park” but advised of guidelines for spectator/participant safety.
Organizers of the “Thunder in the Park” Civil War re-enactment event want to encourage area residents and visitors to take in all that this weekend’s “Thunder in the Park” Civil War re-enactment event has to offer, but also advises those attending about some guidelines that need to be followed in the interest of public safety.
It is suggested that the public bring blankets or chairs to sit in during the battle scenarios and wear good “walking shoes,” as the event will be using most of the Waukon City Park Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15. A limited number of earplugs will
be available. The only vehicle traffi c allowed inside the event area will be for Emergency Management Services and event support. RV campers will be able to get to the RV area in the City Park, but the loop around the Family Aquatic Center will be open for drop off and pick-up only – no parking will be allowed along that loop.
Members of the public are encouraged to visit the camps and ask questions of those participating in the re-enactment, but are not allowed to go into any re-enactor’s tent or pick up any weapons or other equipment, unless by expressed invitation of the owner.
For the safety of the public during the actual battle scenarios, the following
guidelines are also offered:• No member of the public
will be allowed on the battlefi eld during the scenarios, until the troops have assembled and cleared their weapons and an “All Clear” has been given.
• No member of the public will be allowed on the battlefi eld prior to a battle scenario while demonstrations are being held.
• No member of the public will be allowed in camps during battles without authorization from respective commanders.
• No member of the public of any age will be allowed to climb on artillery pieces.
• No member of the public will be allowed to smoke or have open fl ame within 25 yards of an artillery piece.
• No member of the public will be allowed to cross over or remove any safety barrier/tape.
Welcome to Waukon!Enjoy the
Re-enactment!

Enjoy The Allamakee County
Thunder In The Park!
Guidelines for visitors Something for everyone! ‘’Thunder in the Park,” a
Civil War battle re-enactment, returns to Allamakee County this year, providing an opportunity to enjoy a fun and entertaining family weekend while experiencing a bit of American history. The event is being held in the Waukon City Park Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and June 15. Saturday and Sunday admission is free to the public, and all are welcome to attend. (Freewill donations will be accepted and applied to expenses of future events.) This event is sponsored by many Waukon and Allamakee County businesses and non-profi t organizations.
“Thunder in the Park” events actually kick off at 7 p.m. Friday evening, June 13 with a performance of the acclaimed play Unconditional Surrender, An Evening With President Grant at the Waukon High School auditorium. Written, produced and performed by Waukon native Pete Grady, it is said that “Ulysses S. Grant comes to life in this informative, humorous and touching portrayal.” Admission is $5.00. Tickets are now available at the Waukon
Visitors Center in downtown Waukon, and will be available Friday evening at the door of the event at Waukon High School. Grady’s performance is being sponsored by Dave Martin of Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Over the weekend, the “Thunder” will be produced by the cannons on the battlefi eld, as battles of the Civil War are replayed for today’s observers. There will be educational and entertaining programs scheduled all weekend to give one a taste of how life was lived in those times. There will be opportunities to watch military drills and medical demonstrations and learn about how the soldiers lived during the war. The soldier re-enactors will be happy to answer any questions you may have about their uniforms, weapons, camp equipment and more. Re-enactors will also portray important historical fi gures, such as General Grant, President Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and Civil War nurse Cordelia Harvey, to provide perspective from those times. Take the time to see their performances, and take
advantage of the opportunity to have a conversation and snap some pictures with the historical fi gures.
Some events, such as kid’s games, a quilt and local Civil War history display, and Civil War era weapons displays and demonstrations will be ongoing all day Saturday and Sunday. Other events include the “Songs and Stories of the Civil War” as presented by Bob Welch, and a Civil War Era Fashion Show presented by Carolyn Richards. Did you know that during the Civil War, women disguised themselves as men, and fought side by side with the men? Carolyn Richards will tell the story of “Women in the Civil War.” Also, don’t miss Professor Chalmers Bodkin-Childs Ama-zing Patent Medicine and Magic Show” presented by Faire Wynds Entertainment. Saturday night, plan to dance to the music of the Western Home String Band, and experience the sights and sounds of the cannon night fi re exercise.
For more information call the Waukon Chamber of Commerce at 563-568-4110 or check Facebook for “Allamakee County Thunder in the Park.”

ALLAMAKEE COUNTY
Fashion Show will present apparel, perspective from the Civil War eraJessica Michna to present portrayals of Mary Todd Lincoln and Cordelia Harvey
The “Thunder in the Park” program includes performances by Jessica Michna as Mary Todd Lincoln Saturday, June 14 and Cordelia Harvey Sunday, June 15. Michna has become widely known for her riveting portrayals of First Ladies and other historic women, as well as her fi ctitious characters.
She has entertained groups throughout America including guests from as far away as New Zealand, Japan and Brazil. Audiences ranging from young children to senior citizens have been equally enthralled. She has appeared before historical societies, schools, libraries, living history museums, senior centers, churches, and has been guest hostess at parties and weddings.
Michna’s performances are compelling and emotionally enthralling. Audiences laugh along with her humorous anecdotes. They share in her tears as she relates how the horrors of war have impacted families. She has a powerful effect on an audience. Once they have seen one of her
characters they can’t wait to see the next one. Michna is always open to questions after the program.
She will be presenting the following two programs during the “Thunder in the Park” weekend:
Mary Todd Lincoln – “Preserve the Union”
Mary recalls her early years and education in Lexington, KY. She tells of her move to Springfi eld, IL, where she would meet and marry the young prairie lawyer who would eventually become President of the United States. Mary introduces the audience to life in Washington, regaling her listeners with stories about her boys, including her biggest boy, President Lincoln. In this time of national strife, the Lincolns would suffer personal tragedies, concluding on that fateful day in April of 1865.
Cordelia Harvey – “Angel in a Gray Bonnet”
Cordelia Perrine Harvey came to Wisconsin as a
young school mistress. She would meet and marry Louis Harvey, who would rise to the governorship of Wisconsin. Cordelia’s life unraveled when she was widowed after less than three months in the Governor’s Mansion. Her husband’s tragic drowning, while he was traveling to check on the welfare of Wisconsin soldiers fi ghting in the Civil War, left Cordelia rudderless and without purpose.
She would set aside her grief to become the healing angel of a nation wracked by civil war. Throughout the Civil War, she traveled to military hospitals in the South, working to improve the care of wounded Wisconsin soldiers, and in the process improved care on a national basis. She traveled to Washington and convinced President Lincoln to establish convalescent hospitals in Wisconsin for the injured soldiers suffering in the heat and humidity of the South. She came to be known to the soldiers as the Wisconsin Angel.

“Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant” to kick off “Thunder in the Park” with Friday presentation
“Thunder in the Park” returns to Waukon June 13-15, beginning with the presentation of Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant, a one man play written and performed by Waukon native Peter J. Grady. The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday, June 13 at the Waukon High School auditorium. Tickets are now available at the Waukon Chamber of Commerce offi ce in the Visitors Center in downtown Waukon.
Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant introduces audiences to the
man behind this caricature. In the play, the audience meets Ulysses S. Grant in the fi nal year of his life, as he is dying of throat cancer (brought on, no doubt, by his habit of smoking twenty cigars a day). Grant is penniless. The one-hour show uses period music, photographs, cartoons, maps and drawings to explore Grant’s successes and failures in military and civilian life, and provides the audience with a new understanding of Ulysses S. Grant, whom author H.W. Brands has called “The Man Who Saved the Union.”
Pete Grady is a 1971 graduate of Waukon Senior High School. He was raised on a farm near Cherry Mound in Linton Township, the son of Ed and Margaret Grady. He currently lives in Marshalltown and has served as an Assistant Attorney General to Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller since 1995.
For information about June 14 and 15 Thunder in the Park events and activities visit ”Allamakee County Thunder in the Park” on Facebook or call the Waukon Chamber of Commerce at 563-568-4110.
Fashion Show will present apparel, perspective from the Civil War eraThe “Thunder in the Park”
event will once again this year include a fashion show and a discussion on women in the Civil War, both presented by Carolyn Richards of rural Hazel Green, WI Saturday and Sunday mornings in the southeast corner of Waukon City Park. Richards has been participating in reenactments for 21 years. Her introduction to reenactments came about in
a rather unique way.One day her grandmother
gave her the “thumb guard” that her great-great-grandfather had used while serving in artillery during the Civil War. Each cannon used in that era had a vent hole on the rear of the cannon that must be sealed up to prevent air from fl owing through the barrel while it is being loaded or the powder in the cannon could explode.
The easiest way to seal the hole would be to cover it with one’s thumb, but that method would be painful, because the cannons get hot.
The thumb guard, made of leather padding, was created to protect the thumb when it was placed over the hole. When she received the thumb guard, Richards wondered what it was for, so she went to a reenactment to learn about
young school mistress.
She traveled to Washington and convinced President Lincoln to establish convalescent hospitals in Wisconsin for the injured soldiers suffering in the heat and humidity of the South. it. While she was investigating the thumb guard, her husband and son got drafted to serve on a cannon crew during the battle reenactment. “That did it,” she said, “We have been going to reenactments ever since.”
For six years, Richards participated in reenactments by wearing hoop dresses and other attire of the Civil War era. “Then, fi fteen years ago,” she said, “I bought a cannon, a 12-pound mountain howitzer. Then I wanted to get into the battle to play with my cannon. I started to research women in the Civil War and I learned about the unique women who served in that war. Many women, disguised as men,
served on the front lines, in the north and in the south. They served as infantry soldiers, cavalry, artillery and all areas of the war. Other women, called the “vivandiers,” wore special type uniforms and served on the front lines, mostly in medical areas. I decided to become a vivandier, but not in medical. It’s a hoot playing with a cannon!”
The fashion show will tell the story of women’s attire of that era, as well as telling the story of the women who served on the front lines. Later in the day, spectators can watch as Richards participates in the battle reenactment as a vivandier.

“Professor Chalmers Bodkin-Childs Amazing Patent Medicine and Magic Show”
“Step up, step up! Right this way to the Medicine Show! A time to be amazed, be amused and have all of your cares, worries, aches and pains disappear! The Medicine Show has come to YOUR town! And so the call goes out. Something so unique to America and Canada - combine the quack doctors of the old world with the circus of the new, and look out! The Medicine Show was born!
“Please don’t worry, we aren’t going to try to solve your problems with some scurrilous medicine! Certainly not! Ours is totally above board! Why, if you use OUR medicine, your Husbands will be smarter! Wives will be prettier! Children will be quieter! Mules will be stronger! Cows will be contenter! Chickens will be... well, chickener!
“The medicine shows of the past were made up a lot
of families, and this one is no exception. Based upon an actual medicine show of the early 1800’s, Faire Wynds has tried to bring you a fresh look at entertainments of the past. Because most of the show was devoted to the free entertainments, that is what we focus on, as well. Magic, juggling, feats of strength and dexterity, fi re-eating and escapeology - with just a good dose of the Professor’s good
wit will keep just about any ill at bay!
“And remember-if it ain’t Professor Chalmers Bodkin-Child’s Amazing Patent Medicine, it’s something else!”
Enjoy the Patent medicine and magic show June 14 and 15 at the Waukon City Park, according to the schedule of events printed within this special publication. Admission is free. Freewill donations will be gratefully accepted.
President Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by Lance Mack
Through his nearly mirror-like portrayal, Lance Mack will seemingly bring President Abraham Lincoln back to life for those attending the “Thunder in the Park” Civil War re-enactment event being held at Waukon City Park June 14-15. Mack will present a series of “Speech Giving by President Lincoln” sessions throughout the “Thunder in the Park” weekend. Check the Schedule of Events printed within this special publication for additional information about
those sessions.Adorned in President
Lincoln’s signature stovepipe hat and black frock coat, Mack’s stunning physical likeness to the 16th President of the United States only serves to add to his presentation. His tall, lanky body and natural black beard are just part of his overall Lincoln near carbon-copy appearance that initially drew the attention of Mack’s family and friends and soon became the basis for him to pursue his portrayal of the former president.
