The institutions responsible for water management in
Azerbaijan
Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources
implements out groundwater exploration, monitoring water resources
“Azersu” OJSC
provides household water supply countrywide and industrial water supply to some enterprises
Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC
provides agricultural water supply
Ministry of Emergency Situations
deals with protection of strategic water plants, floods, realizing monitoring and other issues
Ministry of Public Health
takes control the quality of the water used for drinking
The legislative framework for the water governance in
Azerbaijan
Water Code of the Azerbaijan Republic Law on water supply and waste water Law on Melioration and Irrigation Law on Environmental Protection Municipal Water Law Law on security of Hydrotechnical facilities and etc.
In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved rules for use of water, sanitary protection zones, water cadastre and other regulations
Azerbaijan ratified the convention of UN, on "Protection and Use of Transboundary
Watercourses and International Lakes” (Helsinki, 1992)
Reconstruction of water sector
In recent years in Azerbaijan is implemented:
o creation and reconstruction of water supply systems in all cities and in most villages o creation and reconstruction of sewerage systems o creation and reconstruction of irrigation and drainage systems o creation and reconstruction of water treatment plants o creation large and small water reservoirs and etc. The works are realized by Government of Azerbaijan with the financing of investments of: the World Bank the Asian Development Bank the Islamic Development Bank the KfW Bank of Germany Sweden’s SECO organization the Japanese International Cooperation Agency the Korean International Cooperation Agency the Saudi Development Fund and other financial institutions
Drinking Water Supply Baku
Baku is supplied with drinking water 5 sources:
• I Baku water pipline –groundwater (1916)
• II Baku water pipeline – groundwater (1958)
• Ceyranbatan water pipeline –surface water (water treatment plant) (1961)
(Ultrafiltration system is under constraction 2011-2014 - capacity 6 m3 per second)
• Kur water pipeline –suface water (water treatment plant) (1970)
• Oguz-Gabala-Baku Water pipeline – groundwater (2010)
(capacity 5 m3 per second – number of wells – 79, depth of well 150-170 m)
