WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, AUGUST 16TH, 2020
PASTORAL
As I prepare to depart the collaborative this weekend, I can only hope that I’ve done my job well in bringing you all closer to Jesus and His Holy Church. I hope that you not only got to know me, Matthew Conley, but more importantly, that you got to know the love of Almighty God through me… for He is the one whom I truly wanted you to know and to love in return.
When September 1 rolls around, be nice to the new guys. The best way you can honor my priesthood and show true care for me is by honoring and caring for the next guys. Give them a chance, allow them to know you, don’t worry yourselves on wondering why they are here or jump to crazy conclusions which we all naturally tend to do sometimes when these shakeups happen. I have no doubt that Bishop Reed and Fr. Kearney will love all of you as I have and that they will serve you well.
I humbly ask you to be open and to help them and pray for them daily. Things will be different but, different isn’t always a bad thing. I know you will all show Bishop Reed and Fr. Kearney what the Watertown Catholic community truly is- welcoming, faithful, and eager to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
If I may ask one final favor, please continue to pray for me too. Pray that my transition to Scituate will be a smooth one. Pray that the people there will welcome me and my co-pastor Fr. Anthony, and give us the chance to serve them and guide them into a deeper relationship with our Lord. If you want, you can even say a prayer that I’ll finally start eating seafood... but I’m pretty sure that one won’t be answered!
If I had to leave you with a final message it would be this- be disciples, strive for holiness, cling always and forever to Jesus who Is our hope and our stay, who is our Lord and redeemer, who is our strength when we are weak and who is our guide when we are strong.
Farewell Watertown. Thank you for everything. I look forward to meeting you in a different way each week in the Eucharist that we celebrate- though we may not be in the same Church, we are united in worship of the same God, always and forever united through him, with him, and in him.
I’m off to the Irish Riviera. I will miss you all.
Peace,
Fr. Matthew

WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A Message From Deacon John As many of you know Father Matthew's last day with us will be Sunday August 16. Unfortunately, due to these pandemic times, we will not be able to gather with Father Matthew for an appropriate celebration and send off. This fact does not diminish our thanks and appreciation for his years of pastoral service to the Watertown community. On a personal note, I want to say how much I enjoyed being his deacon. A freshly minted priest, and youngest one in archdiocese for two years, Father Matthew arrived with great confidence and energy, and occasionally, with a Dorchester attitude and sense of humor. Nothing was funnier than watching Father Sepe and Father Matthew poke at each other. When Father Sepe took ill, if any very young priest could take over, it was Father Matthew. And he did so with courage, enthusiasm, and creativity. For instance, when the virus hit, he scheduled house blessings. Father Matthew took special interest in our altar servers, from young to old, at both parishes. It was a pleasure for me to watch our young servers grow into their role, later be leaders at the Triduum, then lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Father Matthew was very involved with the youth in Watertown and with the community in general, attending many sports games during the year, as well as taking a very active role in the Faith Formation of all of our children. On Sundays he would race back and forth between Sacred Heart and St. Patrick’s for Masses and Faith Formation. Furthermore, he was Chaplain for both the Watertown Fire and Police Departments, positions which he held with pride and conscience, always keeping first responders in prayer, and having annual Masses for both groups. Father Matthew has great faith and he fully believes in God, his beloved son Jesus, the Church Jesus historically established, and the essential nature of the Church's Sacraments for people's salvation. When my father entered hospice last September, Father Matthew went to the facility in Lincoln with me to anoint him. It was a beautiful and comforting service. In December, when my two and a quarter year old granddaughter suddenly and unexpectedly died in her sleep, Father Matthew, with a couple of parishioners, drove four hours to Port Washington, Long Island, for the funeral, then back to Watertown. I never would have expected that. I know many parishioners have had experiences like mine of Father Matthew being there for them – weddings, baptisms, confessions, faith formation, Mass, Adoration, anointing, wakes, funerals, graveside, chaplain, etc., etc. When I first heard Father Matthew was being transferred, I was initially disappointed. But when I saw his new parish and learned he was going to be co-pastor with another young priest, I was very happy for him. Father Matthew spent four years in Watertown. If he became pastor here, it would have been another six, or his first ten years as a priest. I believe the change in scenery will do him good and Scituate will be blessed. Together, let us thank God for sending us such a devoted young priest. Peace, Deacon John
Fr. Conley’s farewell gift to the Deacon was this Bobblehead of himself. Ecce Homo means behold the man.

Mass, Adoration, & Confession
"May He let his face shine upon us." This first verse of Psalm 67 caught my attention this week. The Lord's face shines on us. Perhaps there are times we feel God could be looking upon us with condemning eyes that we do not want to meet, that we have disappointed Him in some way. Nevertheless, our hope is always in the Lord, the one who blesses us and grants salvation to all. It makes me think; when do faces shine? Our faces shine when we are proud of the person at whom we are looking, when we are delighted by them, full of warmth and love. Can that be how the Lord feels
about us? Gratefully, the word of God says it to be so! However, the shining face of God is not just for comfort and joy as an end point. It is missional. The opening phrase of the first verse is followed by the words "so may your way be known upon earth." The prayer inside these words is for everyone to be blessed with an unveiled vision and understanding of the Lord as the one true God, and the action we take is to share this truth with those who do not know. God wants the world to discover His smiling face. Nations that are in turmoil, nations trapped in idolatry can find gladness and joy in the Lord who deserves the praise of all. While we pray for that universal vision, may we play our part in making His love known and helping others find Him a proper place in their lives.
This Week’s Psalm Reflection
O God, let all the nations praise you! May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine upon us. So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation.
May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples in equity; the nations on the earth you guide.
May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you! May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear him!
