LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

MedStar Harbor Hospital is on a mission—to be the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health. With this as our charge, I’m gratified to share with you that we have much to show for our efforts, including a broadened scope of services, a growing expert team of medical professionals, an expanded footprint, and distinguished accolades, all of which helps us to better serve you.

Our Cancer Center, with its beautiful, calming infusion clinic overlooking the Patapsco River, is now more robust than ever. Not only did we recently make aesthetic upgrades, but we also welcomed new physicians to our oncology team.

In further advancements, we recently opened our new Waugh Chapel location, expanding our orthopaedic and sports medicine footprint, increasing our accessibility to the tens of thousands people who turn to us for care. But the progress doesn’t end there.

To honor the legacy of a dedicated member of our Board of Directors, and to help meet the pressing needs of the community we serve, we’ve established the Gregory Barnhill Memorial Campaign. Funding will help to create both The Barnhill Emergency Command Center—a state-of-the-art control facility providing all the tools necessary for hospital emergency command staff to respond effectively in the event of a disaster or emergency—and The Barnhill Center for Orthopaedics at MedStar Harbor Hospital, which will bring new leading-edge technology used to diagnose and treat both common and complex musculoskeletal conditions, thereby enhancing the level of care provided by our world-class team of orthopaedic experts. And our developments and accolades surpass expectations.

With a commitment to putting patients first, we developed a Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality and Safety, represented not only by MedStar Harbor associates and physicians, but also by patients and family members of patients. Based on the candid feedback garnered by this partnership, we are able to improve upon the safety and quality of care we provide.

Because of these efforts and more, we are the only hospital in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware region to receive the prestigious Quality Excellence Award from the Delmarva Foundation an unprecedented ninth time, and our hospital was included on the U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-15 Best Hospitals list. Truly, there is no stronger or more significant statement we can make to our community.

Of course, our mission is an unending one and we will continue making improvements aimed at benefitting our patients and the communities we serve. As always, we are your hospital—we are here to proudly serve you.

In good health,

Dennis W. Pullin, FACHEPresident, MedStar Harbor HospitalSenior Vice President, MedStar Health

Healthy Habits

HEALTHY HABITS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN MENOPAUSE

MENOPAUSE—it’s just one of those facts of life. No woman would volunteer to live with the symptoms that accompany it, but it’s a natural and manageable part of female biology, as the ovaries make less of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone.

For most women, symptoms can start in their 40s or 50s, with 51-and-a-half being the average age for menopause. A woman has entered menopause when she has not had her period for 12 months. If your physician is not sure that menopause has started, he or she may order a blood test to check the levels of certain hormones.

The most common symptoms of menopause include:• hot flashes• vaginal dryness• decreased sex drive• insomnia• night sweats• mood swings• memory problems• slowed metabolism and

weight gain• dry skin• thinning hair• loss of fullness in breast tissue

Because your body produces less estrogen, menopause can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Your risk of colon cancer also increases.

Take action to protect your health“A healthy lifestyle is important,” says D. Paul Stern, MD, an OB/GYN at Medstar Harbor Women’s Care. “There are proactive steps you can take to help lower your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and colon cancer. You should exercise for 30 minutes every day, eat a healthy diet (see story on page 7 about making healthy choices), decrease alcohol consumption, take vitamin D and calcium supplements, and you should not smoke. You should also have a yearly exam with your OB/GYN and an annual mammogram.”

Dr. Stern says there are over-the-counter products and prescription medications that can help you manage menopause symptoms if they are severe or bothersome.

Such medications include phytoestrogen supplements made from plants, vaginal lubricants and moisturizers, hormone replacement therapy, and the prescription medication OsphenaR.

“The best strategy is to have an open, frank discussion with your OB/GYN about your menopause symptoms and any concerns you may have,” adds Dr. Stern.

D. Paul Stern, MD, OB/GYN

Is it hot in here? Tips to manage hot flashesIn addition to medications, Dr. Stern says there are a few simple ways to help manage hot flashes:

• Dress in light layers so you can adjust your body temperature.

• Drink a cool drink like ice water. Carry a water bottle with you and keep a drink of water on your bedside table.

• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods if these trigger hot flashes.

• Don’t smoke.• Keep the house cooler,

especially at night.

ANTERIOR HIP REPLACEMENT gets patients back on their feet faster

For many patients who seek out MedStar Harbor Hospital’s Tariq A. Nayfeh, MD, PhD, even simple things like bending over to put on socks or walking to the mailbox cause intense hip pain. That pain and the limitations it puts on their lives are what bring them to Dr. Nayfeh’s office.

Dr. Nayfeh, director of the MedStar Harbor Hospital Joint Replacement Center at the Centers for Orthopaedics and MedStar Orthopaedics, is an experienced surgeon who offers his patients the complete range of treatment options, including a less invasive approach to hip replacement called anterior hip replacement. He has been performing this advanced procedure since 2006, and has been invited to operate at hospitals all over the world.

Tariq A. Nayfeh, MD, PhD, uses the latest technology and techniques to treat joint problems, including muscle-sparing, minimally invasive hip replacement.

Waterfront MEDSTAR HARBOR HOSPITAL Spring 2015 5

“This approach requires a smaller incision on the front of the hip,” he explains. “The major advantage is that you don’t cut the muscles or tendons around the hip joint, which means that your recovery is faster, you can go home from the hospital sooner, and you’re able to be active sooner.”

Many patients are able to go home the day they have surgery, and all of them are up and walking the day of their surgery. Other advantages of this muscle-sparing approach include:• Less pain after the procedure • Ability to start rehabilitation

to build strength and mobility right after returning home from the hospital

• No need to follow the restrictions required after traditional hip replacement to prevent the new hip from dislocating, such as not bending your hip past a right angle, not crossing your legs, not putting your full weight on your hip, and not turning in your foot for about six to 12 weeks

• Two to eight weeks of recovery, compared to two to four months with traditional hip replacement

MedStar Harbor provides all orthopaedic patients with private rooms with views of Baltimore’s waterfront. Says Darryl Hill, one of Dr. Nayfeh’s patients, “The hospital was the best. I would have gladly stayed there for a few more days. The wonderful view of the water had a positive effect on my spirit. A friend of mine who is a physician visited me and remarked it seemed more like a luxury hotel than a hospital!”

Adds Dr. Nayfeh, “At MedStar Harbor, we have a world-class

joint replacement program staffed by top-notch surgeons. We offer all our patients the latest techniques in joint replacement and pain management right here in the community. We have the best technology for diagnosing and treating joint problems, on par or better than what you’d find at any large academic medical center, but we also treat every patient with personal attention, not like a number.”

Join MedStar Harbor Hospital orthopaedic surgeon, Tariq A. Nayfeh, MD, PhD, for a casual discussion on joint health. Visit MedStarHarbor.org/Classes or call 410-350-2563 to register.

Arthritis prevented Lorn Hill from exercising. After Dr. Nayfeh performed minimally invasive hip replacement on him, he’s able to do his favorite activity without pain.

6 Waterfront MEDSTAR HARBOR HOSPITAL Spring 2015

“ If I had known it would be like this, I wouldn’t have waited so long.”There are few activities Lorn Hill

doesn’t enjoy. The 66-year-old general contractor has done it all—volleyball, mountain climbing, backpacking, zip lining, biking, and skiing. But in recent years, arthritis pain in his hips meant he couldn’t do the things he loved. “I remember the day I had to stop playing volleyball,” Lorn Hill says. “I just couldn’t jump and bend.”

Over time, the pain grew worse. He couldn’t even bend to put on socks in the morning. Although he had been diagnosed with arthritis 13 years earlier, he hadn’t been ready to have surgery. But now the limitations on what he could do bothered him, so, with the help of his daughter, a biomedical engineer, he researched orthopaedic surgeons and found Dr. Nayfeh.

“Once I talked with him, it was a done deal,” says Lorn Hill. “Dr. Nayfeh was thorough, explained everything to me, and even

helped me get treatment for other health problems none of my other doctors had correctly diagnosed.”

After surgery on his left hip, Lorn Hill was out of the house and active in just seven days. Recovery was even quicker after his right-side hip replacement. He was back on the ski slope with his 17-year-old twins just three months later. “It felt like I didn’t even have surgery,” he says. “If I had known recovery would be like this, I wouldn’t have waited all those years. It’s like I’m a young man again.”

“ Top to bottom, my experience was A-1.”Darryl Hill, brother to Lorn Hill,

has never let challenges slow him down. At the University of Maryland, he was the first African-American to play football in a southern athletic conference. After college, he played for the New York Jets, then went to graduate school and became a businessman with successful ventures in the U.S. and overseas.

He had always been very active, but as he got into his 40s, he started having hip pain. “The pain grew worse with each decade,” says Darryl Hill, now 71. “Guys who I used to be able to beat in tennis were becoming competitors.”

Over the years, he had tried various treatments, but eventually felt surgery was his best option. Naturally, his brother, Lorn, recommended Dr. Nayfeh. “As soon as I met Dr. Nayfeh, I felt at ease,” says Darryl Hill. “My experience in the hospital and with every member of the staff, from Dr. Nayfeh’s office to the nurses, physical therapists, and physician’s assistants, was unbelievably good. They were all tremendously skilled, helpful and upbeat. The staff really knows what they’re doing.”

Like most of Dr. Nayfeh’s patients who have anterior hip replacement, Darryl Hill was up and walking the same day he had surgery and came home from the hospital in only two days. Just a week after surgery, he was mobile, and only using a cane on occasion.

“I highly recommend Harbor and Dr. Nayfeh,” he adds. “From top to bottom, my experience was A-1.”

“ Three months after surgery, I was skiing like nothing had happened.”During a skiing trip last year,

72-year-old Thomas Brown thought he pulled a muscle. His hip was causing him pain into summertime, so his primary care physician suggested an injection to help manage the pain. “I got about a day of relief, then the pain was back as bad as before,” he remembers.

After surgery, Thomas Brown went from barely being able to walk to skiing all day.

Waterfront MEDSTAR HARBOR HOSPITAL Spring 2015 7

Brown decided it was time to see an orthopaedist. His daughter, who is a physician’s assistant at MedStar Harbor, recommended Dr. Nayfeh. “I was really impressed from my first appointment,” says Brown. “Dr. Nayfeh is so thorough. He confirmed that my hip joint was deteriorated to the point of needing to be replaced.”

Unfortunately, because of the pain-management injection he had previously received, Dr. Nayfeh told Brown he needed to wait six months before his surgery. “By the time I had my surgery, I could hardly walk,” he says. But the situation turned around completely after surgery.

Brown was walking well the day after surgery. “I had such a positive experience with my surgery,” he says. “I was almost pain-free and walking up and down stairs just days after. I’m convinced the anterior approach made all the difference. If someone had told me I’d feel this good this soon, I would not have believed them. Three months after my hip replacement, I was skiing in New England like nothing had happened.”

“I’m a brand new person!”For years, Vida Martin tried to

tough out the pain caused by the arthritis in her hips. For the 50-year-old manager of a grocery store on a local military base, work meant spending hours on her feet, bending and lifting. “It got to the point that I needed to lean on a cart to walk through the store,” Martin says. “I could stand for no more than two or three minutes without severe pain. One day, I was at home alone and I could not lift my leg to go up the stairs. That was when I knew I had to do something.”

Her primary care doctor had referred her to Dr. Nayfeh two years earlier, so she returned to him for her surgery. “Dr. Nayfeh is more like a family member. He made me feel comfortable and made sure I understood everything. He was both knowledgeable and compassionate, and that put me at ease, even though I had never had surgery and was anxious. Everyone at MedStar Harbor was on-point the entire time I was in

the hospital,” she says.Martin spent only one day in

the hospital and was walking without pain the afternoon of her surgery. “I felt fantastic! There was a dramatic difference between the pain the day before and after my surgery. Before, pain was the center of my day. The pain in my right leg was a 15 out of 10. After, it’s a zero. I can stand longer, walk farther, and go up steps without pain. I’m a brand new person!”

Before surgery, Vida Martin couldn’t stand without pain. Now she’s bowling strikes.

The experts at MedStar Heart &

Vascular Institute are taking the care of patients with irregular heart

rhythms to a new level — using the

smallest heart monitor available. At about the size of a large paper clip, the LINQTM insertable cardiac monitoring device helps MedStar cardiologists quickly diagnose and treat irregular heart rhythms. “The device is placed just under the skin in a simple outpatient procedure,” says electrophysiologist, Glenn

Meininger, MD. “Once implanted, it automatically detects and records abnormal heart rhythms for up to three years.”

The tiny device records heartbeats around the clock and wirelessly transmits the data from a person’s home to a secure web page. The data is checked regularly by specially trained nurses who identify and address any potential problems. “The LINQ device can catch a number of heart-rhythm disorders,” says Angela Drozd, RN, who monitors the incoming data. “The most common uses are to evaluate patients who have a history of fainting without any identifiable

cause or those with a history of palpitations, and to manage patients who have atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat.”

LINQ offers peace of mind and convenience, allowing patients to live normally, even as their condition is being remotely monitored.

CANCER

Lung Screening Saves Lives ARE YOU A SMOKER? Have you ever wondered if you might have lung cancer? You may qualify for a lung

screening. (See box at right).Lung cancer is the number one

cause of death from cancer in the U.S. Each year, more people die from lung cancer than from breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.

“The reason for this is because lung cancer does not produce any symptoms until it has spread,” says Ziv Gamliel, MD, medical director, MedStar Health Cancer Network Lung Cancer Screening Program. “By the time patients suspect

they have lung cancer, it is usually widespread and not curable.”

Until recently, there was no effective evidence-based method for screening long-time smokers for lung cancer, according to Gamliel. “It’s exciting to know now we finally have convincing data there is a reasonable chance to detect lung cancer before it’s too late and we can do something about it,” says Gamliel.

The MedStar Health Cancer Network offers low-cost lung screening for long-time smokers and former smokers to detect lung cancer in its early stages when it is most treatable. “There are over 220,000 cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year and, currently, less than 18 percent are expected to

be cured. We want to improve those percentages. The potential impact of lung screening is huge and could save thousands of lives annually,” says Gamliel.

To schedule a lung screening at a MedStar location near you, call 410-350-3560.

If you meet these criteria, you could be a candidate for our Lung Screening Program:

• You are 55 to 77 years of age. • You have a smoking history of at

least 30 pack-years (i.e., a pack of cigarettes per day for at least 30 years, or two packs per day for at least 15 years.)

• You are either still smoking or quit less than 15 years ago.

“Our physicians are collaborating regionally to maximize patient access to top-quality care, resources and technology throughout the area,” says Les Matthews, MD, medical director, MedStar Orthopaedics in Central Maryland.

“We’ve become less hospital-centric and that has enabled us to provide greater coordination of care, more consistent services and a better patient experience at every MedStar facility.”

Over the past two years, MedStar Orthopaedics has been streamlined to create a more sophisticated and integrated care-delivery system, according to Dr. Matthews. “For patients, that means seamless and easier access to orthopaedic care in the community.”
