The Reception and Inte-gration Agency was estab-lished ten years ago to assist with the increase in the number of asylum applications to Ireland. Direct provision centres were set up throughout Ireland which were meant to house people temporar-ily, a maximum of six months according to a recent RTÉ report, but instead people have lan-guished in this system for years.

Adult males are housed in single rooms with 4 to 6 men per room and fami-lies of up to 6 people are housed in a single room without a private bath-room. People in the asy-lum process are not al-lowed to work or access third level education and are provided with €19.10 per week to meet their needs. The direct provi-sion centres provide asy-lum seekers with their room and meals.

There are approximately 6500 people currently liv-ing in direct provision in Ireland and 50% of those are families with children.

Every person, regardless of their country of origin, has the right to asylum under the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as under the Geneva Con-vention. People seeking asylum flee their countries of origin because of perse-cution carried out by their own governments or if their governments are not able to protect them. Asy-lum seekers and their chil-dren are no longer safe in their own countries.

The Dubl in based AkiDwa (the Swahili word for sisterhood), which is an ethnic minor-ity led network of African and migrant women living in Ireland, has recently published Am Only Saying It Now, which chronicles the experiences of 121 women living in direct provision in Ireland. The study found that the women felt harassed and discriminated against and an overwhelming fear that if they complained it would negatively impact their case for asylum.

The Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC) 2009 re-port, One Size Doesn’t Fit All, details the failure of the state to meet the “most basic human rights of those in its care includ-ing rights to health, food, housing, and family life.”

FLAC has called for the end to the direct provision system advocating instead that people in the asylum system should be allowed to work, prepare their own meals, have access to proper health services, and be assured of their basic human rights as guaranteed by the United Nations and the Irish Constitution.

“Living in a reception centre is really depressing. You don’t have your own life. You can’t eat what you like to eat. It’s really frustrating living in this condition because you don’t have freedom. It’s like being in jail. -from Am Only Saying It Now

“You fear to speak or say anything since you are threat-ened with transfer every time you question or challenge. Gardai have been called many times when residents stand up for their rights...You are al-ways in fear of the conse-quences, with a feeling of lack of control, hope or drive in your life. - from Am Only Saying It Now
