    Program and gave each member the Specialty

    Track worksheet for their next rating.

    Lt Col Levitt gave the seniors present a review

    of the role of the senior member in the main

    missions of CAP; Aeospace Education, Cadet

    Programs and Emergency Services.

    Lt Col Tony Vallillo, CTWG Chief of Staff and

    former 143rd Squadron member, congratu-

    lated the seniors on the success of the unit. He

    reviewed the wings goals for 2012 and how the

    143rd is an important part of those goals.

    ach year the senior members of the 143rdmeet at a secure, undisclosed location to

    reate goals for the squadron for the coming year.

    While the senior members have monthly staff

    meetings, it has become a squadron tradition that

    he first meeting of the year be a special occasion.

    Cadets have heard rumors of these secret proced-

    ngs, but for the first time the squadron news-

    etter is offering a peek into this months senior

    taff meeting. This years meeting was held at the

    Waverly Inn in Cheshire, CT.

    Maj McCandless opened the meeting with a

    eview of 2011 and his goals for 2012. He also

    eviewed the senior staff assignments.

    Maj Palys reviewed the Subordinate Unit

    ollowing up on the successful ES Training

    xercise in December, the 143rd planned and

    onducted another exercise on 14JAN12. This

    xercise included members of Silver City

    Operation:January Heat

    The 143rd Starts 2012 with an

    Emergency Services Exercise

    Composite Squadron (Meriden, CT) and The 103rd

    Composite Squadron (Windsor Locks, CT).

    Mission Base was located at the Silver City

    Squadron headquarters at the Meriden-Markham

    Airport (MMK).

    Training focused on Ground Team and Mission

    Base tasks. Two ground teams were deployed to

    Hurd State Park in East Haddam, CT to conduct a

    search for a missing hiker. Mission Base staff were

    This exercise tested and expanded on tab

    methods used in previous exercises. Plans fo

    next exercise include expanding on the use of

    simulators and more fully staffing the mission

    per the staffing charts included in the Inc

    Command System.

    ducation, Physical Fitness and Character Development.he goal of the Cadet Programs leadershiplement is to develop in cadets the abilityo think independently and lead others inn atmosphere of teamwork and mutualespect. Senior members, acting as mentors andnstructors, help the cadets develop their leadershipotential. Cadets must pass multiple-choice

    ests of their leadership knowledge to completemost achievements and earn milestone awards. Some testsequire cadets to perform drill and ceremonies. Achieve-

    ment 8 includes a speech and essay assignment. Cadetschievements in the Staff Duty Analysis program are mea-ured through reports and staff service.

    he goals of the Cadet Programs aerospace education ele-

    ment are to inspire in youth a love of aviation, space, andechnology; provide them with a foundation in aerospacescientific principles; and introduce them to aerospace

    career opportunities. CAP introduces cadets to aviation,space and technology through self- study and group-studymethods. Cadets use the Aerospace Dimensions modulesduring Phases I and II of the Cadet Program and the Aero-space: The Journey of Flight text during Phases III and IV.

    The goal of the Cadet Programs physical fitnesselement is to develop in cadets a habit ofregular exercise. Physical exercise in the Cadet Programwill be used to improve cadets physical fitness while in-creasing confidence, teamwork and determination.

    The goal of the Cadet Programs character development el-

    ement is to develop in cadets a commitment to live CAPsCore Values, and the ability to think critically about moraland ethical issues. Cadets participate actively in characterdevelopment forums where they discuss moral and ethicalissues through the use of case studies. The senior memberconducting the forum does not formally evaluate or testthe cadets, but facilitates the forums to ensure all cadetsparticipate in the discussion.

    Practical Leadership for Cadet Of

    The purpose of the cadet staff duty analysis pro(SDA) is to improve cadets critical thinking andmunication skills through the practical applicatleadership.

    The objectives for SDAs include:1) Improve critical thinking skills by identifying

    lems and imagining solutions that make use oftechnical knowledge of a given specialty.

    2) Improve communication skills through active ling on the job and by describing in oral and wbriefings staff position duties and procedures

    3) Comprehend leadership and teamwork by exing how squadron staff functions interrelate anvalue to the team and by describing the quleaders need to succeed in those specialties.

    The SDA program accomplishes these objectivconnecting cadet officers with senior membeofficers, having the cadets serve as apprenticstudying the position requirements and acperforming some staff functions, cadet officehow leadership manifests itself in real-world eences, thereby promoting a deeper appreciatihow CAP fulfills its mission as the Air Force Aux

    The SDA program consists of two facets: the

    report and staff service. Through the SDA repodet officers analyze and summarize in writing wrequired to serve successfully in the respectivposition. Through staff service, cadet officers eence the position first-hand, working alongsidrespective senior member staff officer, a mentoprovides on-the-job training and guidance.

    The SDA Report. During each achievement inIII and IV, cadet officers will complete a SDA rfor the staff position associated with the achievem

    Staff Service. Additionally, once during Phase Ionce during Phase IV, the cadet will par ticipate i

    service, acting as an apprentice to a senior mestaff officer for 4-6 weeks.

    Cadet to Speak at CAPNational Conference

    he CAP Drug Demand Reduction Program has

    reated the Cadets Lead the Way to Your Future

    peech Competition. This is a national competition

    pen to all cadets. The winning cadet will receive a

    omplimentary registration to the CAP National

    Conference in Baltimore and will speak at the event.

    The Cadet Oath

    The Cadet Oath symbolizes how serious cadets

    are about becoming leaders. Cadets are expected

    to be able to recite the Cadet Oath from mem-

    ory. More importantly, cadets need strength of

    character to live up to its noble tenets.

    I pledge that I willserve faithfully

    in the Civil Air PatrolCadet Program,

    and that I will attendmeetings regularly,

    participate actively inunit activities,obey my officers,

    wear my uniform properly,and advance my education

    and training rapidlyto prepare myself to be

    of service to my community,state, and nation.

    ncampments are one of the most popular andworthwhile activities available to cadets. They chal-enge cadets to develop self-discipline and teamwork

    while broadening their understanding of aerospace.Most encampments are conducted on a military in-tallation. Encampments are conducted under CAP

    upervision with Air Force advice, assistance andooperation. They may be conducted at active duty,National Guard, or Reserve bases. They may also beonducted at any community, state, or other nationalacility (including DoD installations).

    ol Huchko, the CTWG Commander, announcedast month that Connecticut will not sponsor an en-ampment this year. Cadets who wish to attend anncampment in 2012 may apply to incampments inther wings. The application process may be differentor each wing, but in every case a CAP Form 31 is re-

    uired. Since cadets require the Wing Commanderspproval to attend any CAP activity outside of Con-ecticut cadets should submit their application pa-erwork to the squadron commander well in advancef the encampment.

    Drug Demand Reduction Officer

    Coordinates CAPs role in support of the Presi-

    DDR program at the unit level. Promotes drug

    awareness to CAP members through lesson plans,

    events, activities, educational materials, bulletins,

    newsletters and the web. Gives drug awareness

    presentations to outside organizations. Manages

    reporting requirements.

    Emergency Services OfficerAssists the commander by managing and directing

    emergency service activities. Establishes working

    relationships with local agencies responsible for

    search and rescue, disaster relief and other local

    emergencies. Develops emergency service plans,

    training programs and standard operating proce-

    dures, and maintains a rapid alerting system to

    assemble emergency service resources as needed.

    Finance Officer

    Assists the commander and finance committeein proper management of unit funds. Ensures

    approved bills and deposit details are forwarded

    The 1960s found Marines fighting in the swamps andjungles of Vietnam while at the same time pioneer-ing Americas entry into space. The first U.S. combattroops in Vietnam were Marines who landed at DaNang in 1965, supported by F-4B Phantom IIs andA-4D Skyhawks. From Hue to Chu Lai to Khe Sanh,Marines on the ground depended on their FlyingLeathernecks. In 1962, Marine Col. John Glenn be-came the first American astronaut to orbit the earth,a voyage that lasted less than five hours, but would beremembered by Americans forever.

    In 1998, Glenn returned to space as the oldest Amer-ican to do so, with 144 orbits over nine days. MajorGeneral Charles Bolden entered the Marine Corps dur-ing the Vietnam War and built on the legacy of thosewho preceded him when in 1980 he became the firstAfrican American Marine selected by NASA to becomean astronaut. Over the next 14 years, he flew fourshuttle missions, including commanding both Atlantisand Discovery. On May 23, 2009, President BarackObama announced the nomination of Bolden as NASAAdministrator.

    Today, Marine aviation is task organized to support theMarine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), as the avia-tion combat element, by providing six functions: assaultsupport, anti-aircraft warfare, offensive air support,electronic warfare, control of aircraft and missiles,and aerial reconnaissance. Marine AV-8B and helicop-ter air combat elements of the Marine ExpeditionaryUnits (MEU) are deployed year-round on amphibiouscarriers all over the globe. Their locations, along withthose of the big deck carriers, are the subject of the firstquestion asked by the President of the United Stateswhen hot spots develop around the world.

    Energy DrinksEmergency Department Visits

    Involving Energy Drinks

    nergy drinks are flavored beverages containing highmounts of caffeine and typically other additives, such

    s vitamins, taurine, herbal supplements, creatine, sug-rs, and guarana, a plant product containing concentrat-d caffeine. These drinks are sold in cans and bottles andre readily available in grocery stores, vending machines,onvenience stores, and bars and other venues wherecohol is sold. These beverages provide high doses ofaffeine that act as a stimulant upon the central nervousystem and cardiovascular system. The total amount ofaffeine in a can or bottle of an energy drink varies frombout 80 to more than 500 milligrams (mg) of caffeine,ompared with about 100 mg in a 5-ounce cup of coffeer 50mg in a 12-ounce cola.1 Research suggests thatertain additives may compound the stimulant effects ofaffeine. Some types of energy drinks may also containcohol, producing a hazardous combination; however,

    lthough consumed by a range of age groups, energyrinks are marketed to appeal to youth and are con-umed by 30 to 50 percent of children, adolescents, andoung adults. Of the several hundred brands of energyrinks on the market, the most popular brands of en-rgy drinks that account for the majority of the markethare are Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, Full Throttle, andmp. Marketing for energy drinks often targets youngeople, suggesting benefits such as increased energy and

    tamina, weight loss, and enhanced physical and/or

    mental performance. Emphasizing thrill seeking withnames such as Cocaine and Venom, energy drinkcompanies use innovative media to reach their audienc-es, such as advertisements in video games and at sportsevents, and solicit market research feedback fromconsumers via social media to help identify newpackaging designs.

    The popularity of these

    drinks has increased mark-

    edly in recent years, with

    energy drink sales increas-ing 240 percent from 2004

    to 2009. Consumption of

    energy drinks is a rising

    public health problem be-

    cause medical and behavior-

    al consequences can result

    from excessive caffeine intake. A growing body of sci-

    entific evidence documents harmful effects, particularly

    for children, adolescents, and young adults.

    Between 2005 and 2009, there was a marked increase in

    the number of emergency department visits involvingenergy drinks. It is notable that visits involving energy

    drinks alone often caused adverse reactions, suggesting

    that energy drink consumption by itself can result in

    negative health events serious enough to require emer-

    gency care.

    Although there are no recommended or safe levels

    that have been experimentally established for caffeine,

    most researchers and clinicians consider 100 to 200 mg

    of caffeine per day to be moderate intake for an adult.

    Pediatricians recommend that children and adolescents

    abstain from all stimulant-containing energy drinks.Excessive caffeine intake from energy drinks can cause

    arrhythmias, hypertension, and dehydration, in addition

    to sleeplessness and nervousness. Additional risks and

    other medical complications can arise depending on the

    individuals overall health status (e.g., cardiac condi-

    tions, eating disorders, diabetes, anxiety disorders) and

    other drugs or medications he/she may be taking (e.g.,

    medications for attention deficit disorder). Use over

    time can cause dependence and withdrawal symp-

    toms. Risky behavior such as drinking and driving can

    also be facilitated by mixing energy drinks with other

    substances such as alcohol; a study of college students

    found that more than half of them mixed energy drinks

    with alcohol.

    Finally, given the finding that one in six visits involved

    energy drinks in combination with alcohol, public health

    awareness campaigns could also help dispel the misguid-

    ed belief that energy drinks can offset or eliminate the

    effects of alcohol intoxication.
