Teex instructor spotlight: Jim chew

Senior Training Specialist Jim Chew has worked as a water and wastewater operator for more than 40 years. He started his career as an operator at the City of Odessa in 1968. Later he moved to Bexar County, serving

in various capacities including Water and Sewer Superintendant and then General Manager. Jim also served as the Director of Public Utilities for the City of Live Oak until becoming a TEEX instructor in 1983.

Jim has a passion for teaching. The thing he enjoys the most is being approached by operators across the state and being told, “You helped me to get my license.” Jim is well-known for incorporating a bit of humor in to the class. His wife says he is a frustrated stand-up comedian, and she likes that his teaching and travel across Texas saves her from being subjected to his comedy everyday.

Teex Water & Wastewater Training celebrates its 70th anniversaryIn 2010, TEEX Water & Wastewater Training will celebrate 70 years of service to the citizens of Texas. Since 1940, TEEX’s Water & Wastewater Training Program’s mission has been to provide education and training for operators, improve public health, and to provide clean and safe drinking water for the citizens of Texas.

TEEX, a member of The Texas A&M University System, has some of the most knowledgeable instructors in the country, top-quality training materials, and some of the industry’s best training aids.

Texas small Public Water systemTraining ProgramThe Texas Small Public Water System Training Program provides “no-cost” training and also pays for the licensing fees of operators working for small public water systems. Operators of small community or non-transient, non-community public water systems serving 3,300 persons or fewer may be eligible for this program.

Registered members of the TSPWSTP are eligible to receive three vouchers per year to attend required training courses such as TEEX’s Basic Waterworks Operations course. Additional vouchers may be available by contacting the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality at 877-822-5349.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION ASSEMBLY TESTER (BPAT)

Using our Pump and Motor Maintenance Trailer, students will learn about scheduling and planning maintenance work, how to maintain a budget, and how to use cost-control methods effectively. You will gain valuable, hands-on training on the installation of pumps and the types, uses and maintenance of pumps. The types, uses and maintenance of motors, lubricants and lubrication will also be discussed. Hand tools, bearings, power transmission and safety will be taught throughout this course.

TEEX’s 20-hour Pump and Motor Maintenance (WWW203) course is offered as both an open-enrollment and a contract course.

Transfers, Cancellations, and Refund PolicyIf you cannot attend a class, you MUST contact TEEX in advance to either transfer or cancel your registration. Please refer to the transfer, cancellation, and no-show policy listed below.Transfers: • Transfers to another scheduled class (or from one customer to another) are accepted at any time before the start of the class at no charge. • Customers are encouraged to transfer to a future scheduled class of the same course. • If the customer cannot transfer to a scheduled class of the same course, then he/she may transfer to another class of a different course and receive either a refund or pay the difference between the two class fees (if applicable). • If the customer cannot attend any scheduled class, then the Cancellation/Refund Policy is in effect.Cancellations: • TEEX will provide a full refund if you cancel 15 or more calendar days before the start of the class. • Cancellations received 14 calendar days or less before the start of the class will be charged a fee of 10% of the class tuition. • If TEEX cancels a class, customers will be offered: 1) a transfer to a scheduled class of the same course; 2) a transfer to another class of a different course (customers will receive either a refund or pay the difference between the two class fees, if applicable); 3) a full refund.No Shows: Registered participants who do not contact TEEX in advance to cancel their registration and do not attend their scheduled class will be charged the entire class fee. eLearning/Home Study Courses: Refunds are not available for eLearning or home study courses, nor may the course be transferred from one customer to another.
