1. POOL DESIGN

1. PURPOSE

Your first step is to define how you want to use your pool.Are you looking primarily for family recreation? Exercise? Relaxation? Will you be entertaining clients and colleagues? Do you want a large lounging patio or active play area? How much shade and sun exposure do you want? Do you need to include accessibility features such as ramps?Consider the pool's shape: rectilinear, curvilinear, angular or free form.Take into account the views of your pool both from the exterior and interior of your home. Think about how you can blend your pool into a natural extension of your home.Spend some time on this. Figuring out how you want to use your pool is one of the biggest factors in determining the pool design that will work best for you.

2. HOW LONG DO YOU WANT IT TO LAST ?

This may sound a strange question, however if you are on a short term contract in Tanzania, and want you pool as fast as possible - you may want to consider a Liner pool, - which only take 10 days to install and come with a 5yr Warranty - and are much cheaper than a concrete pool

3. LOCATION

Once you know how you want to use your pool, expand that vision to incorporate any future features you may want to include. Even if you won't be installing these options right away, it's prudent to make room for them in your final design.Spas, water features and garden structures all ramp up your backyard possibilities. You may also want to leave room for a play area, tanning deck or outdoor kitchen, and plan for garden, fencing and special landscape features.Many people choose to extend their pool season by incorporating a heat source such as a firepit, fireplace, patio flame or heater. Cabanas, pergolas and trellises are all also great additions to a pool area.These options can enhance the beauty and recreational potential of your entire property. Planning for them ahead of time will help ensure that your pool design can accommodate them.

4. PLAN IT CAREFULLY

Once you've tackled official restrictions, consider practicalities.How easy is it to move between your house and the pool area? Where will people change? Is there a convenient service area for refreshments? Where will the pool equipment and chemicals be stored? Is there a convenient place to store pool toys and accessories?By considering practical issues early, you can make sure they are addressed in your pool design.

5. CHECK ALL FITTINGS AND FIXTURES ARE IN STOCK

To avoid disapointment please check well in advance for stock of fittings and fixtures

6. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME OF THE YEAR TO BUILD

Building in the rainy seasons can lead to delays - March/May and end of October > beginning of December

8. MAKE SURE IT'S WATERPROOF

Waterproofing your pool is critical - we would advise you to do a leak test BEFORE costing your pool (fill up the pool with water and monitor levels. If the level is dropping you can pump out the water and note where the damp patches are - these would normall indicate a leak

9. MAKE SURE YOU USE A CONTRACTOR WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING

Many contractors in Tanzania will claim they know how to build a pool, - please check their credetials and work refrences carefully

10. DRAW UP A DETAILED BUDGET

It is important to draw up a budget - hopefully this document will assist in working out your material costs

2. WATERPROOFING

TYPE OF WATERPROOFINGWaterproofing you pool is the most important area of building a Swimming Pool - a LEAKING pool will cost both in WATER and CHEMICALS

1 CRYSTALLINE The Best Waterproofing you can use is a CRYSTALLINE WaterProofer eg XYPEX (There is nothing better!) A big advantage of this product is that even if there is subsequent cracking the Xype will self heal

2 WATERPROOF ADDITIVEThere are waterproof additives you can add to the concrete - however it is important to note that these products can prevent Crystaline Waterproofers from working

3 CEMENTITIOUS MEMBRANEThis is a 2 part Polymer Mix with Powder which will offer you a Waterproof Cementitious membrane onto which you can tile or coat

4 SWELLABLE WATER STOP (Putty)These can also be used at any Construction Joint (easier to apply) as well as around any fixtures or fittings that intersect your concrete (eg Weir Boxes, lights, Outlets & Inlets

1. CRYSTALINE CONCENTRATEXyepx Concentrate is a powder, with when mixed with water prduces a slurry coat which you simply paint on to the concrete. For Swimming Pools x 2 coats are recommended

When using XYPEX Concentrate you do NOT require any Water Bars

Xypex is a unique chemical treatment for the waterproofing,protection and repair of concrete. XYPEX CONCENTRATE is the most chemically active product within the Xypex Crystalline Waterproofing System. When mixed with water, this light grey powder is applied as a cementitious slurry coat to above-grade or below-grade concrete, either as a single coat or as the first of a two-coat application. It is also mixed in Dry-Pac form for sealing strips at construction joints, or for the repairing of cracks, faulty construction joints and honeycombs. Xypex prevents the penetration of water and other liquids from any direction by causing a catalytic reaction that produces a non-soluble crystalline formation within the pores and capillary tracts of concrete and cement-based materials.
