Watch out! Your dream job could be a nightmare in disguise.

Reading the job ads can be dangerously addictive if you are on the hunt for your dream job. Flexible hours. Sigh. Global offices. Swoon. Genuine career prospects... Hire me now!

So you think you’ve found ‘the one’? It might be time to ask some difficult questions about your dream job.

Does size really matter?Yes. But it depends what you’re looking for…

Big companies can offer security and great perks. But you might end up caught up in politics or a mundane day-to-day routine.

Small companies can be great for learning opportunities and variety in your role. But you might find yourself being micromanaged by a bossy company owner, or taking on more work than you can handle.

Try to match your working style with the right company.

Do you really have anything in common?

Perception is a dangerous thing. You’ve got to look beyond the surface to really see if the job on offer is going to be fulfilling. Just because the company or brand is really attractive doesn’t mean the job will be as well.

Is there any chemistry?

Does your dream come with a horrible boss? Are you prepared to spend eight hours a day with them? You can cover your eyes and block your ears, but you’ll have to face them eventually. So make sure there’s some chemistry between you and your potential boss and if not…Save yourself now!

Are you a gold digger?

A wise person once said, ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’. Whoever they were, they were right. So ask yourself, will you enjoy working in this role and will you able to do a good job? If the answer is no – walk away. Happiness is worth more than gold.

Do your homework

Do some research about your potential employer’s workplace culture. You might be surprised where your dream company ranks on the list of ‘good places to work’.
