Army Cadet Force –Yet again we are treated to the success of our local Army

Cadet Force. See the centre pages. This is pure adventure for the youth of our

community and building the character and stamina needed for life today, these are the

calibre of youth required for our society. I is not just any group, our local group has excelled

alongside others and one can see the pride in their faces. Well done Martin Brammer, your

NCO’s and your whole troop. I hope your troop continues to grow in numbers, having

almost doubled in recent months.

The Loss of a Village Champion—Mike Cutler, whose 60th Wedding Anniversary we

celebrated in the last issue, has died within a few short weeks of that event. He worked hard

for the village as a Parish Councillor. For many years he has represented the Parish by

meeting with LCC Highways personnel to ’get things done’ on our roads. It was, and still is,

like pushing a barrow-load of wet cement. As Deputy Chair he was in line for Chair of the

Parish Council (which would have been the last year of his life), but for some reason the

tradition was changed to exclude him. Mike would have been pleased to read the report

submitted by Martin Brammer (centre pages) about the cadets as he was promoted to

Company Sergeant Major of his Army Apprentice School before entering the Army

proper. I cannot let him leave this village, even in death without recommending him for the

Stead Award, given for services to the village, even though it is posthumous. At least he

would have his name on the board in the Council Chamber for posterity. The Award has not

been made this year as no one was nominated. Please write to me as Editor to say you sup-

port me in this.

Deputy Editor—I am pleased to tell you that a volunteer as come forward to act as Deputy

Editor, a local lady, a relative newcomer to the village but with plenty of pertinent

experience. This calms the fears of the Cherry News Group who have

been concerned that we had no backup in the event of poor health. Another relative

newcomer has volunteered to make up the Group numbers to scrutinise our input and

output. All members want the same: to provide a free newsletter which encourages society

and promotes information.

The pictures from an exchange visit by Cherry Willingham Twinning Society have been

displayed this month as there was no room last month. This is another vibrant group within

the village. Mike Cutler was Chair of the County-wide Twinning Group for 8 years.

Beaver Scouts in ‘Nigeria’ - Detail about this weekend pretence of life in Nigeria staged

by Cilla Lamerton and helpers was included last month and it is supported in pictures this

month. We should all be encouraged by the efforts put in by volunteers to provide character

building activities for our young people.

VICARS BLOG JULY/AUGUST 2014

Over the last week, in its weekly cycle of

prayer, the church has given thanks for the

apostle Barnabas, know as the ‘Son of

Encouragement’.

Barnabas first comes onto the scene in the

Bible early in the book of Acts – the account of the birth of the early church

and the subsequent challenges it faced. He is noted in a passage which tells

of how the early church started to come together by sharing their

possessions, holding things in common and giving to the poor. Barnabas

sold a field and brought the money to the apostles to buy what was needed.

Later on Barnabas accompanies Paul on his various journeys and then con-

tinues in ministry on his own, to be ‘the encourager’.

I note this, because the Diocese of Lincoln is asking its parishes to think

about ‘what they might hold in common’. For many years we have thought

about ‘our parish’, or ‘our village’, now we are being encouraged to ask how

we might work better together, what we can hold in common, what we

might share and where we can support one another. The term that the

Diocese have asked us to use is ‘mission communities’ - how can we build

mission communities, to both build the church and serve our communities?

This includes, how we work with our ecumenical partners, not just how we

work as Church of England Churches.

Of course, this involves a risk. It is a natural human reaction, when we are

asked to work together, to hold onto what we have because that is what

gives our security, and yet, what we learn from scripture, one example of

which is in the life of Barnabas, is that when we give up the things we hold

onto, God grows what we have given.

These are exciting times in our Diocese, much is happening …. watch this

space!

Every Blessing

Penny

Parish Council News

The parish council spends around £3000 annually on litter picking throughout the

village. As we have no additional budget available, but wish to maintain high

levels of cleanliness in our community, we are seeking a vibrant volunteer to

organise and run a one day litter pick in the village. We are also seeking volunteers

to join in with the litter picking. All equipment will be loaned from WLDC and the

event has the full support of the parish council. To express an interest please

contact the Parish Clerk on 01522 753398 or [email protected].

We have welcomed a new litter picker to the council: Julian has recently begun

work for us and has made an excellent start in tackling the backlog of rubbish that

has built up whilst we have been between litter pickers. On behalf of WLDC

please can we remind dog owners that WLDC is more than happy for dog waste

to be deposited in ordinary litter bins but that the waste must be double

bagged.

Finally, please can we politely request that you keep hedges and shrubs trimmed

back so that they do not overhang pavements and cause obstructions to

pedestrians.

Volunteer PCSO

VPCSO’s are required to work 4 hours per week in their chosen area once

fully trained. There is a lower age limit of 18yrs but no upper age limit.

Training consists of four weekends in the classroom followed by three

months on patrol with a buddy, followed by a gradual move to being

signed off as self-sufficient. Full uniform will be supplied and all paid

for by the PCC for the next two years.

This may be of particular interest to two groups: firstly to anyone taking

early retirement but not quite ready to sit back and relax, and secondly to

students/those looking for a career in the Police Force as full training will

be given. In the last few years intake to the Police Force has not been

advertised as recruits have progressed from PCSO and other internal

workers. It will be a rigorous process but is valuable for anyone’s CV.

Perhaps it is worth spreading the word as this could be an opportunity for

someone in our community and also of benefit to our community. If you

want to know more before making a decision to apply, please contact the

Parish Clerk in the first instance.

Cherry Willingham Neighbourhood Plan What is a Neighbourhood Plan? A mechanism created by the Government

to enable residents of parishes such as Cherry Willingham to have a say in

planning decisions which affect the future of their communities. This Plan

must fit in with Government policies and local plans produced by e.g. West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) and Lincolnshire Count Council (LCC). It

is not, therefore, an option to say nothing should happen!

By whom? In Cherry the Parish Council has taken the lead in setting up the Group and will oversee the process. The process is overseen also by WLDC.

How is a Plan produced? A Steering Group has been established to tackle its technical requirements and to consult residents about their ideas and concerns. This consists of Parish Councillors and other interested residents.

What is the process? In setting up the mechanism the Government has set out clearly the process to be followed. If you want to know more about this,

details can be found on the following web-site:

http://locality.org.uk/resources/neighbourhood-planning-roadmap-guide/. At

the heart of this process is consulting residents and the final report has to be approved via a referendum of registered electors in the village.

What is the starting point? We are fortunate that just over a year ago the village produced the CW2020 Community-Led Plan which was accepted

locally and by WLDC and LCC. This means that we have much of the

information required for the first stage of the process. This Plan states: “Building on all that is good about the village and community now, our vision

is: to create a friendlier, greener, safer, healthier place to live; with enhanced

facilities and services which meet the needs of all residents; supported by a volunteering community, vibrant voluntary organisations and partnerships

and strong relationships with other agencies whether statutory or charitable.”

How can you be involved?

By joining the Steering Group and helping to shape the plan - contact the Parish Clerk.

By visiting our stall at the Community Gala on 5 July - details elsewhere in this magazine - and sharing your ideas.

By looking out for our web-site which should be live shortly at https://sites.google.com/site/cherrywillinghamplan/

By letting us have any thoughts or ideas you may have about the future of the village - contact us via the Parish Office.

Perhaps learn a new hobby or craft, meet other interesting people, make new

friends, and try other experiences together. Then why not join Cherry WI?

It’s no longer just Jam and Jerusalem!.

We are a group of women who meet once a month for 2 hours to enjoy good

company, have a laugh, hear interesting speakers, involve ourselves in WI

national campaigns and, on occasion, enjoy outings to interesting places –

including a bit of retail therapy! If you like the sounds of this then do come to

a meeting to see what we are like and bring a friend with you!

We will have a stall at the Cherry Gala on July 5th where you can pick up our

programme and talk to some of our members. Also our events programme is

posted up around the village.

Did you know that in many areas the WI is enjoying a resurgence of younger women? We need you women of the village to join us to bring Cherry WI into

Drink and Drug Driving Report a Drink Driver - text DRINK to 80800

Lincolnshire Police launched their summer drink and drug drive campaign. 1st June 2014

Members of the public will be able to report a drink driver they know using a short code

SMS text service. Simply text the word DRINK to 80800 with details of the vehicle,

where the person will be drinking and when. Police officers will use the information to

stop, arrest and process the driver through the Courts.

This is only to be used for non-emergency cases.

If members of the public see a drink/drug driver actually driving, they should treat it as an

emergency and call 999.

With a long hot summer forecast drivers are reminded that police will be carrying out

roadside checks at all times of the day including the mornings.

With the use of FIT (Field Impairment Test) officers will be testing drivers for the effects

of drugs as well as drink during this campaign.

Whilst the numbers are slowly falling there are still an unacceptable number of deaths and

injuries on our roads linked to drink and drug driving.

This operation will not target one section of the community but be spread across the

entire driving population to get the message out that drinking and driving is not tolerated.

In a recent Government THINK road safety survey around a quarter of respondents (24

per cent) in England and Wales thought they knew someone who drove when over the

legal limit which is similar to previous surveys. Men are far more likely to be drink drive

casualties than women and younger road users are also disproportionately likely to be

involved – around one third of those killed or seriously injured were aged between 16 and

24, almost 80% of whom were male.

Cherry Willingham Cricket Club

Hello All—With the cricket season now in full swing I thought it was appropriate to

bring the village up to date with results so far. As I write this the start to the 2014 season

can perhaps be best described as steady rather than spectacular.

The Saturday 1st XI which now plays in the Lincolnshire Premier Division (the 2nd tier

of cricket in the county) began their campaign with a fantastic victory at

Hartsholme, who had come down from the top tier (ECB league). Batting first Cherry

made 13? all out, a total which many would have felt was well below that required.

However, the Cherry boys really produced the goods with the ball as Will Carter and Joe

Dobson aided by a couple of run outs bowled the hosts out for 7? leaving Cherry as

comfortable victors. This fine victory was followed by another away triumph and again

it was at another side tipped to do well this year. Alford batted first and recovered well

from 80 for 8 to post a challenging 168, however, with skipper Will Carter in fine form

with the bat, scoring 79, it seemed Cherry were coasting to victory. A middle order col-

lapse though turned the game on it’s head and with only a single wicket remaining new

signing Russ Binnington was the hero, using all his experience to steer Cherry over the

line. Unfortunately the lads were unable to back this up on the bank holiday Monday

losing by 9 wickets at Haxey but I know they are determined to bounce back in their

next fixture when they entertain Alkborough.

The Sat 2nd XI began their campaign with a 6 wicket defeat at Louth 2nd’s but a week

later the first win was registered with a 3 wicket success over Alford. Keith Whitely,

Phil Lunn and Matt Spikings all showed up well with the ball before John Singleton and

James Gray looked in good touch with the bat. A cluster of quick wickets did cause

some concern and tension but Whiteley and Spikings ensured the win and a full 20

point haul.

The Sunday sides have yet to really get into their respective season’s both playing only a

single game at the point of writing this. The 1st XI were beaten at Hartsholme, however,

the 2nd XI earned an encouraging 9 wicket win at Heighington with Jamie Burnett and

Matt Spikings claiming 4 wickets apiece before James Gray (28) and Matt Jenkins (26*)

saw Cherry home.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone in the village that they are very wel-

come to pop down to home games and lend us their support and perhaps even get in-

volved, be it supporting off the field activities, work on the pitch and ground or perhaps

even playing a few games then you would be very welcome. The Club has a Race Night

in the Cherry Tree on Saturday 7th June (starts 8.30pm) and we would like to extend an

invite to anyone in the village and beyond that is looking for an enjoyable night out and

chance to support the cricket club to come and join us. The club runs four weekend

senior teams as well as a senior midweek side and also has an Under 15 team entered

into the youth league for 2014. For any additional information on any of the above

please contact Club Secretary, Matt Dobson on 07940 048910.

Gardening Club – 4th Wednesday in the

Month

The club meets on the 4th Wednesday of most months

at 7.30pm in the church hall. We do not meet in

January or in July and August. You will be most

welcome at any or all of the meetings and we would

welcome new members so put our September date, 24th

September, on your calendar and come and enjoy the

talks we plan. We also try to have at least one outing per year to a nearby garden to

further our knowledge and enjoyment of other people’s ideas.

On Saturday, 26th July we are holding a Coffee Morning in the church hall from

10am to 12 noon. Everyone is welcome; we shall have a few stalls, and plants for

sale. Please come along. At our June meeting we had a talk on violas by Rob

Chapman, a gold medal Chelsea winner.

On September 24th we are holding a mini show. The five categories will be – a

single flower in a small container; a garden photograph; the funniest shaped

vegetable; a house plant; and a small table arrangement which can be flowers, fruit

or vegetables. A small entrance fee of 20p for each category will be charged and

best of all, everyone will have a chance to vote for the winners. Don’t forget to

keep your pots and hanging baskets watered well, usually daily, in the warmer

weather and water in the evening or early morning so the plants can benefit before

the water evaporates!

For more details of the club please ring Terry on 754254.

With the season now over we can look back as reasonable by reaching three

cup semi-finals and finishing fifth in the league which was quite an

achievement, not always being able to field our best team and with

young promising players the likes of George Asplin and Joe Silson.

Hopefully we will have more for next season.

Paul Leedle finished second of the top goal scorers of the league with 33

goals from 20 games which included five hat tricks. Neil Robinson and

Brendan Foster-Mattheison both made a top 25 appearances. Ashley Bradley

scored 12 goals from 24 appearances. George Asplin made 22 appearances

and scored 7 goals.

The club would like to put on record our thanks to team manager Gary

Jenkinson for his time and dedication he has showed to the club and doing

a first class job. Our thanks go to our President Bert Wilkinson and

Vice President Steve (Ginge) Fisher for their interest in the club. Our best

wishes to Ginge for his recent illness. Thanks to Babs and the Cherry Tree

for their support and after match chip butties. Thanks to the residents at the

Church Lane end of the pitch for their help in returning the balls from their

gardens.

We now look forward to next season, so any players over 16 years looking

for a club please phone 01522 808176 or contact any club member. We will

“It’s a business thing. If you have an appointment in business, you keep it. And that’s the same with a trainer – you keep it because you feel that you will be letting

them down if you don’t – not to mention that bit of pride which tells you that you

are not going to let them think you can’t hack it”

And that simple thing has changed Jeff’s life.

“I feel great”, he says “but the strange thing is that the exercise started to affect me

mentally – in a good way. I thought when I started that I’d just do it to lose a bit of weight and get fitter but it’s affected the way I feel and the way I think. I’ve got

more confidence – I sleep better. I feel more positive. A lot of it is about your head –

it’s all mental issues” Inspired by Jeff’s story we’ve put together a stress-busting package designed to

change your life, like it did Jeff’s.

Risen from the Dead

There are not many people in history who can say they have risen from the dead but

one of Wellbeing’s clients can make that claim.

Jeff Allen is a lively, ebullient guy, full of life and wit – the sort of person who is

great to have around - a bloke who can be guaranteed to make a party go with a

swing.

Almost 7 years ago, he was the Managing Director of a 20 million pound business.

He was, by his own admission, overweight and out of condition. But he was OK.

He didn’t feel that he was stressed – he was coping fine.

And then it happened. He was enjoying some leisure time with friends, go-karting

when he suffered a massive cardiac arrest – and died! Luckily there were medics on

hand who brought him back (with great difficulty, he tells us). But brought him

back they did. And after a spell in hospital he was returned to normal life.

Now, as I’m sure you can imagine, an experience like that makes you stop and

think. And Jeff was no exception. He says that although he didn’t think he was

worried or hassled at the time, actually his whole life-style added up to one word –

STRESS: job, overeating, no exercise. And to cap it all, 3 years ago he went

through a divorce! All those events lead one way, even though you don’t realise it.

But he decided to actually do something about it – and to my mind that makes him

quite special. So many people sit back and just moan about how unlucky they are.

Jeff found out by researching on the internet and reading that he should be doing

some exercise – that was the way above everything else that would tackle his

problem. But he’d tried gyms before and always given up after a short while simply

because he couldn’t motivate himself to go. He knew he should but there was

always something more important, more urgent to do.

So he came to Wellbeing Fitness and asked us if we could help him. He signed up

for one of our packages, where three times a week, in a studio in complete privacy

he would have a one to one session with a Wellbeing Fitness personal trainer – a

session that was designed just for him, for his particular situation and state of

health. And during each session the trainer would guide him carefully through it

step by step, modifying and adjusting the exercises session by session, week by

week.

The results are spectacular. He told us:

Laser tag. Many thanks to those parents who stayed to help.

The following week we tried Tie Dying tee shirts to be used as our team Strip for the

Next weekend we shall be camping with other Beaver Scouts from across Lincoln District,

working on Outdoor challenges and Activity Badges.
