What is the Institute of Waste Management Of Southern Africa?

multi-disciplinary non-profit organisation operational in Southern Africa that is committed to supporting professional waste management practices.

The Zimbabwe Chapter, which was founded in 2002, operates in Zimbabwe with its own mandate and structures but in close cooperation with the head office of the Institute which is based in South Africa.

Our organisation comprises of voluntary members who promote environmentally acceptable, cost effective and appropriate waste management practices. We strive towards the protection of the environment and people of Southern Africa from the adverse effects of poor waste management by supporting sustainable best practical environmental options.

About the Institute of Waste Management

We contribute to the improvement of waste management standards and legislation, support international, national and regional trends in best environmental practices; promote the science and technology of waste management and practice affordable cost effective management of waste. Education and training in the realm of effective and efficient waste management is also a key focus for us.

When the IWMSA was established over 30 years ago, it was the vision of the founders to provide Southern Africa with a clean and healthy environment. Today this is still the very core of the organisation.

Membership CategoriesINDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIPS

Professional Member         Any person who has been actively involved in waste management for more

than twelve months and is possession of a recognized qualification.                                                                 

Associate Member Any person not eligible for member category above, but who is interested in

or connected with some aspect of waste management.Retired Member  Any Institute member who is no longer actively engaged in or connected

with waste management.                                                                                                            Student Member

Any student actively engaged in a course studying to qualify in subjects approved by Council.

How To Become a MemberBecome a member in six easy steps:1. Choose the membership that suits you

best – should you need advice; please contact our head office for more information.

2. Download and complete an application form

3. Submit your completed application form with your proof of payment through to  the secretariat

documentation with the application form.5. Once we receive your application it will be

submitted at the next branch committee meeting for approval.

6. Once your application has been approved, your membership certificate will be emailed to you and will be valid provided that all annual subscription fees are up to date.

Team Leaders Simon Bere is an experienced environmental

scientist and pollution control engineer. He holds a Master of Science from Lancaster University where he specialises in pollution sciences and integrated solid waste management. Simon has worked extensively in the environment and natural resources sector in Zimbabwe including in urban environmental planning and management.

Simon is one of the founding members of the Zimbabwe Chapter of the Institute

Team Leaders Rowan Kushinga Machaka is a seasoned

environmental practitioner whose key area are participatory community development and environmental impact assessments. He is also the founding member of the Environmental Association of Zimbabwe and a PHD student in environmental management.

Kushinga’s experience is critical especially in community participation programs in waste management issues by communities
