China’s rapid economic growth

is leading to steadily rising

waste generation.

While the overall level remains

low, MSW generation in cities

such as Beijing, Hong Kong,

Shanghai or Guangzhou is

beginning to approach that in

Europe.

The focus for investment in

the waste sector is very

much on WtE incineration,

which many local authorities

consider greener than

landfill, and also helps deal

with burgeoning power

generation requirements.

China still sends most of its

waste to landfill, although the

proportion has fallen in recent

years, as WtE becomes more

popular. Many urban areas

are running out of landfill,

which can be over-full and

poorly managed.

Power generation is a major

driver of investment in WtE

projects. This is generally

classic waste incineration,

although newer techs such as

gasification are beginning to

appear.

AcuComm has identified

actual/potential WtE power

generation of 858 MW since

2013.

Most waste projects are located in

China’s more developed eastern

provinces, where population

density and economic development

are at their greatest.

Investment is beginning to spread

to the interior, however, as cities

there are targeted for rapid growth

by the Chinese government.
