Waste and Recycling
Guide
IntroductionKeele University’s Waste Policy follows the simple principles of the waste hierarchy to reduce waste at source, reuse materials where possible and recycle as much of the waste as we can:
Recycling is important in:
• Reducing waste sent to landfill
• Reducing pollution and conserving natural resources
• Saving energy on raw materials
• Reducing greenhouse gases that cause Global warming and Climate Change.
The Recycling Strategy is part of the University’s Carbon Management Plan to reduce Carbon emissions 34% by 2020 based on 1990 levels.
There is also a strong financial incentive to reduce waste at source and recycle. Landfill tax rates from April 2013 is at £72 per tonne and the rate will continue to escalate by £8 in 2014 when it will reach £80 per tonne.
The purpose of this guide is to inform staff, students and visitors of what and how to recycle waste within the Keele Campus academic buildings, central services buildings and Halls of Residences.
How much waste is Keele University recycling?
In the 2011/12 academic year the University recycled 43% of its waste. This amounts to 571 tonnes of waste! We would like this to increase to 60% by
2014.
How It Works- Recycling in Academic and Central Services Buildings on CampusWaste Collection from External Bin Stores
All office waste is collected by the University contractor from external bins in the waste stores. General waste bins are clearly labelled as “Residual Waste” and have black lids. All recycling bins are clearly labelled as “Dry Mixed Recyclables” and have red lids.
Internal segregation of recyclables
Dry Mixed Recyclables need to be segregated from general waste to be collected by our waste contractor.
The following should be recycled:
• Paper and Card
• Newspapers and Magazines
• Plastics, Grades 1-4 (including bottles, cups, food wrappers, magazine wrappers, bags)
• Food and drinks cans
• Aluminium Foil
None of the following should be placed within the Dry Mixed Recycling bins:
• Food Waste
• Glass
• Metal and Wood
• Electrical Equipment
• Polystyrene
• Liquids
Only clear bin liners can be used for the recycling bins. The waste contractor will not accept recycling in black bags.
Recycling in Academic and Central services BuildingsThe Dry Mixed Recycling can be segregated into ONE Mixed Recycling bin. You must make sure you use only clear bags for recycling.
Communal recycling points have been placed in public areas and the dry mixed recycling is segregated in to two waste streams, for ease of use and to minimise contamination from items that can’t currently be recycled.
Recycling in Halls of ResidenceIf you are a student living in Halls of Residence you can segregate all Dry Mixed Recyclables (paper, card, plastics, cans) in your kitchen diner. These will be collected by University staff and taken to the outside bin stores for collection.
Recycling of GlassGlass waste is recycled “in-house” at all catering outlets and bars. Glass recycling will be introduced to other areas in the near future.
Recycling of Food wasteFood waste is segregated “in-house” at the university catering outlets.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)The WEEE Regulations aim to reduce the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment going to landfill, and increase recovery and recycling rates. WEEE must be segregated from other wastes so it can be collected by a specialist contractor.
Waste and Recycling A-ZAerosols Empty aerosols that are non-hazardous can
be placed in the Dry Mixed Recycling Bins.
Aluminium Foil
Can be placed in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins.
Must be clean and dry.
Batteries Batteries contain hazardous materials; please do not throw them away with general waste.
Please cover both ends (terminals) of the batteries with insulation tape as when in bulk batteries can spark.
Batteries when stored together with exposed terminals have been known to short circuit and overheat potentially causing fires.
Books
Can they be re-used? Books can be reused by donating to betterworldbooks.co.uk
Books can be placed in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins.

Try and only use plastic bags that are biodegradable.
Plastic bags can be placed in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins.
Cartridges - Printer
Ink Cartridges should be recycled for re-use.
The University is currently reviewing the collection service for this.
CDs, DVDs and minidisks There is currently no provision for recycling CD’s. However this is currently under review.
