Some of the nation’s most prominentgay Republicans, including former U.S.Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and formerRepublican National CommitteeChairman Ken Mehlman, have saidthey are not supporting Republicanpresidential candidate Donald Trump.

“As chairman of the D.C. GOP, I willsupport the party’s nominee,” said JoseCunningham, the gay chair of the D.C.Republican Party. “Mr. Trump is on a rolland Republicans across the country willsupport him in droves,” Cunningham toldthe Blade in a statement.

Longtime gay Republican activistBob Kabel, an elected D.C. RepublicanCommitteeman and, like Cunningham,a member of the Republican NationalCommittee, said he too is supporting Trump.

“I’m in the position where I will back the

Republican presidential and vice presidentialnominees,” Kabel said. “I feel it’s importantto take back the White House.”

Added Kabel, “In all candor, I think Trumpwill be fine on LGBT issues. I don’t agreewith him on some other issues, but he willat least not do anything bad on gay issues.”

One of the nation’s most prominentgay Republicans, former U.S. Rep. JimKolbe of Arizona who served for 22 yearsin Congress before retiring in 2007, saidhe would not support Trump in thegeneral election.

“He is manifestly unqualified to be presidentof the United States, having demonstrateda complete lack of understanding of policyissues or how he would work within thesystem to achieve his goals,” Kolbe said in a

    – Do not run out of ODEFSEY. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcareprovider before your ODEFSEY is all gone.

     –

Do not stop taking ODEFSEY without first talking to your healthcare provider. – If you stop taking ODEFSEY, your healthcare provider will need to check your

health often and do blood tests regularly for several months to check your HBVinfection. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms youmay have after you stop taking ODEFSEY.

    What is ODEFSEY?

ODEFSEY is a prescription medicine that is used to treat HIV-1in people 12 years of age and older:

    • who have not received HIV-1 medicines in the past and have an amount of HIV-1 intheir blood (“viral load”) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL, or

    • to replace their current HIV-1 medicines in people who have been on the same HIV-1medicines for at least 6 months, have a viral load that is less than 50 copies/mL, andhave never failed past HI V-1 treatment.

It is not known if ODEFSEY is safe and ef fective in children under 12 years of age or whoweigh less than 77 lb (35 kg).

When used to treat HIV-1 infection, ODEFSEY may help:

    • Reduce the amount of HIV-1 in your blood. This is called “viral load”.

    • Increase the number of CD4+ (T) cells in your blood that help fight off other infections.

Reducing the amount of HIV-1 and increasing the CD4+ (T) cells in your blood may helpimprove your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or getting infectionsthat can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).

ODEFSEY does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. You must keep taking HIV-1medicines to control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses.

Ask your healthcare provider about how to prevent passingHIV-1 to others. Do not share or re-use needles, injection equipment, or personal itemsthat can have blood or body fluids on them. Do not have sex without protection. Always

practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexualcontact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.

    Who should not take ODEFSEY?

Do not take ODEFSEY if you also take a medicine that contains:

    • carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro®, Tegretol®, Tegretol-XR®, Teril®)

Att’y gen’l says federaldefinitions couldapply to Va.

    By MICHAEL K. [email protected]

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herringon Tuesday said the federal definition ofanti-LGBT discrimination could apply tostate law.

Herring wrote in a 19-page letter tostate Dels. David La Rock (R-LoudounCounty) and Ken Plum (D-FairfaxCounty) and state Sen. Thomas Garrett(R-Buckingham County) that the Virginia

Human Rights Act’s provision banningdiscrimination based on sex protectsLGBT Virginians.

The three lawmakers had asked Herringhow Virginia laws banning discriminationbased on sex define sexual orientationand gender identity.

“For more than a quarter-century,since the General Assembly enacted theVirginia Human Rights Act, it has beenour commonwealth’s policy to protectall individuals within the commonwealthfrom unlawful discrimination on the

basis of sex,” wrote Herring. “Numerousother Virginia statutes also prohibit sex-based discrimination in areas such asemployment, housing and contracting.”

“I conclude that those statutes mostlikely prohibit discriminatory conductagainst LGBT Virginians when thatconduct is based on sex-stereotypingor on treating them less favorably onaccount of their gender,” he added.

The Virginia Human Rights Act does notspecifically include sexual orientation orgender identity.

Then-U.S. Attorney General EricHolder in 2014 said Title VII of the CivilRights Act of 1964 — which specificallyaddresses workplace discrimination —protects transgender people. The EqualEmployment Opportunity Commissionruled last summer that discriminationbased upon sexual orientation amount tosex discrimination under the statute.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of1972 bans schools receiving federal fundsfrom discriminating on the basis of sex.

Gavin Grimm, a trans student whoattends Gloucester County High School, claims in a federal lawsuit that theGloucester County School District’s policybanning him from using restrooms andlocker rooms consistent with his genderidentity violates Title IX.

The Justice Department argued in theGrimm case that Title IX requires schooldistricts to allow trans students to userestrooms consistent with their genderidentity. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court ofAppeals in Richmond last month ruled inGrimm’s favor.

“The law in this area has developedrapidly and the clear trajectory has beentowards a more inclusive understandingof sex discrimination that encompassesdiscrimination based on sexualorientation and gender identity,” saidHerring in a statement he released alongwith his opinion. “This growing body ofcase law has not required an expansionof the definition of ‘sex’ or ‘gender.’ Ithas merely required courts to applywell-established prohibitions against sexdiscrimination and gender stereotyping

to LGBT Americans.”Family Foundation of Virginia President

Victoria Cobb sharply criticized Herring.“It comes as no surprise that, once again,

the attorney general has ignored the plainreading and long-established view of thelaw to come to a politically motivatedconclusion,” said Cobb in a statement.

Herring released his opinion a dayafter U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynchannounced a federal civil rights lawsuitagainst North Carolina over House Bill 2. Thestate’s governor, Pat McCrory, on Mondaysued the Justice Department in responseto an order that his administration stopenforcing the anti-LGBT law.

The 4th Circuit’s ruling in the Grimmcase applies to North Carolina because itfalls within its jurisdiction.

Gray, who LGBT activists have called thecity’s most LGBT supportive mayor, wasconsidered the favorite to win the club’sendorsement. The club had endorsedhim in each of his past races for the Ward7 seat, Council Chair, and mayor.

“I’m ecstatic,” Gray said after the forum.“I worked very hard over the years to beable to do the right thing, to bring justiceto our LGBT community,” he said. “Andtonight’s endorsement frankly was anaffi rmation of the work we tried to do. Iappreciate it very much.”

In opening remarks and whileanswering questions from the audience,Alexander pointed out she hasshepherded through the Council severalimportant LGBT supportive bills in herrole as chair of the Council’s Committeeon Health and Human Services.

When asked to explain why she was oneof just two of the Council’s 13 members tovote against the city’s marriage equalitylaw in 2009, Alexander said she wasacting in accordance with the majorityof her Ward 7 constituents, whom she

said “had not yet evolved” on the issue ofsame-sex marriage.“I would vote for that now,” Alexander

said. “I have evolved and so has Ward 7.I’m proud to say Ward 7 has evolved and Istood with Ward 7.”

Gray pointed out how he chose to leadthe Council’s effort to pass the marriageequality law in his role as Council chair, eventhough he was denounced by conservativeministers and others who opposed allowinggays to marry back in 2009.

In pointing to his LGBT supportiveactions as mayor, Gray noted he put inplace through executive action a directiverequiring health insurance companies toprovide coverage for sex reassignmenttreatment for transgender residents, making D.C. one of the first jurisdictions

in the country to adopt such a policy.Club members speaking on Gray’s

behalf included former D.C. Councilstaffer Ron Collins; Amy Loudermilk, who served as deputy director of theMayor’s Offi ce of LGBT Affairs underGray; transgender activist Bobbi Strang;and former Whitman-Walker DeputyExecutive Director Patricia Hawkins.

Among the club members who spokein support of Alexander were her gayformer staff assistant Ronald King, lesbian activist and current DeputyMayor for Greater Economic OpportunityCourtney Snowden, and gay charitablegroup Brother Help Thyself President andmayoral aide Jim Slattery.

Mayor Muriel Bowser is supportingAlexander and May.

King called Alexander a strong LGBTcommunity ally and supporter. He saidLGBT activists shouldn’t fault her for notinitially supporting same-sex marriage

any more than they fault PresidentObama and Democratic presidentialcandidate Hillary Clinton, who King notedalso opposed same-sex marriage beforeevolving to become supporters.

Gray won the endorsement by a marginof 70 percent, with 40 club memberscasting ballots at the endorsementsession. Alexander received 22 percent.Ward 7 candidate Grant Thompson, whodid not attend the forum, received 5percent. Ten percent cast their vote forno endorsement.

A fourth candidate competing for the Ward7 seat in the upcoming June 14 Democraticprimary, Delmar Chesley, also did not attendthe meeting and received no votes.

In the Ward 8 race, in which fivecandidates are competing in theDemocratic primary, May captured theStein Club endorsement with 72 percentof the vote. She has expressed strongsupport for LGBT rights.

Challenger Aaron Holmes, whoattended the endorsement forum andalso expressed strong support for LGBT

rights, received 10 percent. Also receiving 10 percent waschallenger Trayon White, who camewithin two points of overtaking May in thespecial Council election for the Ward 8seat in 2015. The special election was heldto fill the seat that became vacant due tothe death of former D.C. Mayor and Ward8 Council member Marion Barry.

White, who supporters said was outof town, and Ward 8 candidates BonitaGoode and Maurice Dickens, did notattend the Stein forum. Goode andDickens did not receive any votes fromStein members.

White is considered to have a shot atbeating May based on his strong showingin the special election. In the 2015 race,White did not return a questionnaire

from the Gay and Lesbian ActivistsAlliance, a nonpartisan group that ratescandidates on LGBT issues. White alsodid not respond to questions from theWashington Blade in the 2015 raceseeking his positions on LGBT issues.

But this year, according to GLAA

President Rick Rosendall, White hasreturned the GLAA questionnaire. GLAAwas scheduled to release its ratingsbased on the candidates’ questionnaireresponses and records on May 11.

Evangelical preacher Franklin Grahamposted a Facebook message on May 6characterizing as a “monument to sin”plans that President Obama reportedlyis completing to designate the StonewallInn bar in New York’s Greenwich Villageas a national monument in the strugglefor LGBT rights.

Graham was reacting to a Washington

Post story reporting that Obama waspoised to use his presidential authority todesignate the Stonewall Inn bar and thesurrounding streets as one of the NationalPark Service’s historic monuments.

“A monument to sin?” Grahamstated on his Facebook page. “That’sunbelievable. War heroes deserve amonument, our nation’s founding fathersdeserve a monument, people who havehelped to make America strong deservea monument,” he said

“I can’t believe how far our countryhas digressed,” said Graham. “I hope thepresident will reconsider. Flaunting sin isa dangerous move.”

Franklin Graham is the son ofinternationally recognized preacher andtelevangelist Rev. Billy Graham.

Federal offi cials and Rep. JerroldNadler (D-N.Y.), whose district includesGreenwich Village, have said the historic

designation would commemorate the June 1969 police raid on the Stonewall Innthat triggered six days of riots by LGBTpatrons and bystanders.

LGBT advocates and historians considerthe clash between Stonewall patrons andthe police to be the first large-scale actionof defiance against anti-LGBT oppressionand the spark that started the modernLGBT rights movement.

A statement released by Nadler’soffi ce said he would join U.S. InteriorSecretary Sally Jewell and National Park

Service Director Jonathan Jarvis in a May9 community meeting to discuss theproposal. Among those expected to attendwere New York State Sen. Brad Hoylman,State Assembly member Deborah Glickand New York City Council member Corey

Johnson, all of whom are gay and whorepresent the site of Stonewall.

“It’s no surprise that the three offi cialswho represent the area and support themonument are all openly gay,” FranklinGraham stated in his Facebook message.“God’s word tells us, ‘Righteousnessexalts a nation, but sin is a reproach toany people.”

Obama has cited what he has called thehistoric significance of the Stonewall riotsin several speeches, including his January2013 inaugural address.

2016 hopeful agreedto summit daysbefore N.Y. primary

    By CHRIS [email protected]

Sen. Bernie Sanders has cancelled ameeting with HIV advocates his campaignaffi rmed days before the crucial New YorkDemocratic primary he would attend, according to the activists who sought toarrange the meeting.

The 30-minute meeting betweenSanders and HIV advocates was set forMay 13 in Indianapolis. Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton also agreed to meetthe activists, who say they’re are still ontrack to meet with her Thursday for onehour in New York City.

Hilary McQuie, director of U.S. policy

and grassroots mobilization for the HIV/AIDS group Health GAP, told the Blade theSanders campaign cancelled the meetingwithout explanation.

“He did cancel — no reason given andthey have not rescheduled,” McQuie said.“We feel a bit burned by the bern, andhope they will answer our emails now.”

Peter Staley, a New York-based gayrights and HIV advocate, told the BladeHIV advocates before the unexpectedcancellation were in daily contact with theSanders campaign.

“They sent a ‘need to reschedule’email last Sunday (for our Tuesdaymeeting), and then bizarrely stoppedcommunications completely after that,”Staley said. “We’ve been emailing andcalling every day since then, includingwarning them days ago about our intentto go public.”

According to a statement announcingthe cancellation from the Brooklyn-based HIV and homeless advocacy groupHousing Works, attendees were informedon April 30 the Sanders meeting was

cancelled, which was two days aftermany of them purchased expensive,last-minute plane ticket to attend theevent. Although the Sanders campaignpromised to “reschedule” as soon aspossible, it has yet to propose a new date, time or city, the statement says.

The Sanders campaign didn’t respondto a request for comment late Sunday toconfirm the meeting with HIV advocateswas cancelled or to explain why the eventwould be nixed.

Both Clinton and Sanders agreed inApril, days before the New York primary,to meet separately with HIV advocates. The primary, which Clinton won by 16points, was considered crucial in thecontest for the Democratic presidentialnomination and ended up delivering a

decisive victory for the frontrunner. The agreement to meet was a result

of letters sent to each of the presidentialcandidates requesting a meeting in theaftermath of Clinton’s controversialremarks earlier this year — for whichshe has apologized twice — praisingPresident and Nancy Reagan for their

efforts on HIV/AIDS.In the letter to Clinton seeking a

meeting, HIV advocates called on her toappoint an HIV adviser, meet with HIVcommunity leadership and declare acommitment to end the AIDS epidemicnationally by 2025.

Among the more than 70 signers ofthe letter were the New York-based GayMen’s Health Crisis, ACT UP New York, theNational Black Justice Coalition, NMAC,Human Rights Campaign, the New York-based health agency Amida Care and

the D.C.-based HIV/AIDS advocacy groupHousing Works.McQuie said the HIV advocates have

also now heard from the campaign forpresumptive Republican presidentialnominee Donald Trump. The HIVadvocates were told he’s finalizinghis policy team, but will get back to themonce that occurs, McQuie says.

According to a statement fromHousing Works, the Clinton and Sanderscampaigns each proposed beforethe New York primary to meet with HIVcommunity leaders, but confirmationsnever materialized. Only after threateningdemonstrations at the Clinton andSanders headquarters on the day beforethe New York primary did both campaignspromise May meetings.

Charles King, CEO of Housing Works, said in the statement he’s among Sanders’supporters, but the candidate’s decisionto cancel the meeting is “incrediblydisappointing.”

“I have been a supporter of BernieSanders, and was proud to vote for himin the New York primary,” King said. “It isdisheartening to see the ‘revolutionary’candidate who claims to value grassrootsorganizing and visionary politics notmake time in his schedule to meet withus. He is supposed to be the guy whowalks the walk, but all we’ve heard thepast six weeks is talk—and fairly tepid, reactive talk at that.”

Ramon Gardenhire, vice presidentof policy and advocacy for the AIDSFoundation of Chicago, said Sandersshould remain true to his word to meetHIV advocates.

“AIDS activists have learned the hardway that patience costs lives,” Gardenhire

said. “‘SILENCE=DEATH’ was a reality in the1980s, not just a slogan, with thousandsof Americans dying while PresidentReagan ignored the new epidemic. Asthe AIDS crisis grew, politicians often saidsupportive things and then did nothing.True leadership requires action, not

just empty words. Time and again, Sen.Sanders has publicly vowed to show upand not back down even when a fight isan uphill battle. Now is the time for him to

demonstrate that to the HIV community.”Although Trump hasn’t made

comments on HIV/AIDS over the courseof the 2016 campaign, both Clinton andSanders have made confronting HIV/AIDS, which affects an estimated 1.2million people in the United States, acomponent of their campaigns.

After apologizing for praising NancyReagan on HIV/AIDS, Clinton wrote an op-ed outlining a plan to confront the disease, which includes increased HIV and AIDSresearch and investment; expanding accessto PrEP, especially for at-risk populations;reforming state HIV criminalization lawsand encouraging Republican governors toaccept Medicaid expansion.

Sanders unveiled a similar plan the dayafter that left out PrEP, but included agoal for “virtually universal access” to low-cost AIDS medications as soon as they’reapproved and pushing for legislation tobar discrimination against LGBT people

and people with HIV/AIDS.According to media reports, winning

the Democratic presidential nominationthrough pledged delegates alone is nowmathematically impossible for Sanders. The candidate has based continuinghis campaign on calling on unpledgedsuperdelegates to back the candidatewhom their state supported at theDemocratic National Convention, whichhe says gives him a path to victory.

    Sanders, Trump win in W.Va.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump on Tuesday won their party’srespective primaries in West Virginia.

Initial results indicate Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton in the state’s Democraticprimary by a 51-36 percent margin.

Sanders won 16 of West Virginia’s 29 delegates, compared to the 11 thatClinton earned. The former Secretary of State remains ahead of the U.S. senatorfrom Vermont in the amount of total delegates.

Trump won the West Virginia Republican primary with 76 percent of the vote.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) suspended theirrespective campaigns last week after disappointing finishes in Indiana’sRepublican primary. Trump’s victory in the West Virginia is the first time he wona contest as the GOP’s presumptive nominee.

“We just got word that we won our 19th state, taking the majority of thedelegates in today’s primary in West Virginia,” Sanders on Tuesday told hissupporters in an email.

“Every vote we earn and every delegate we secure sends an unmistakablemessage about the values we share, the country’s support for the ideas of ourcampaign, and a rejection of Donald Trump and his values,” he added.

Clinton and Trump on Tuesday won in Nebraska.Clinton’s victory comes more than two months after Sanders won Nebraska’s

Democratic caucuses by a 57-43 percent margin. The Omaha World-Heraldreported the U.S. senator from Vermont won 15 delegates, compared to the 10that Clinton received.

Trump won the state’s Republican primary with 61 percent of the vote. Hereceived all 36 of Nebraska’s GOP delegates.

Libyan LGBT activisthopes to leave Benghazi

A Libyan LGBT rights activist who asked the Washington Blade not to publishhis name was driving in the city of Benghazi in 2014 when three Islamic militantsstopped his car.

The men had Kalashnikovs, and one of them tried to open the door to his car.The men shot at him as he drove away.

“Thank God (they) didn’t do anything to me,” the activist told the Blade onSaturday during a telephone interview from Tunisia where he was attending ahuman rights conference.

Benghazi, which is on the Mediterranean Sea, is Libya’s second largest city.It is located slightly more than 400 miles east of the country’s capital of Tripoli.

The activist, who is 36 and studied medicine before becoming a journalist, toldthe Blade that LGBT people in Benghazi are under increased threat since the2011 revolution that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

Militants with the so-called Islamic State’s Libya chapter, which has itsstronghold in the city of Sirte that is roughly halfway between Benghazi andTripoli, last year clashed with the Libyan Army in an attempt to take control ofthe activist’s hometown. He told the Blade that a woman and child died and 28others were injured on May 6 when members of the Sunni militant group fired arocket into the center of Benghazi.

Members of Ansar al-Sharia, which is an affi liate of al-Qaida, killed U.S.Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans during a raid

on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. Former Secretary of StateHillary Clinton continues to face criticism from Republican lawmakers over herhandling of the incident.

The activist told the Blade that police offi cers may have sent an LGBT personto jail before 2011.

“Now it’s different,” he said. “If they catch you, they can immediately kill you.”The Libyan Army currently controls 95 percent of Benghazi. The Islamic State and another militant group control the remaining five percent

of the city. The activist with whom the Blade spoke said the three militants whoattacked his car in 2014 later swore allegiance to the Islamic State.

The activist told the Blade that he knows people who have been killed bymilitia members because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

He said he knows of at least four LGBT people who have been murdered in

Benghazi.“Everything is allowed,” he said. “You have guns. You had people who hatedthe LGBT community before.”

“Now we can’t do anything without being afraid,” added the activis t. “Everyonehas guns. It’s very easy to kill them. The LGBT community is an easy target.”

Consensual same-sex sexual relations are punishable by up to five years in prison. The State Department’s 2015 human rights report notes Islamic militias “often

policed communities” in Libya “to enforce compliance with militia commanders’understanding of ‘Islamic’ behavior, and harassed and threatened with impunityindividuals believed to have LGBTI orientations and their families.”

The Islamic State has publicly executed dozens of men in Syria and Iraqaccused of sodomy. The activist with whom the Blade spoke said members ofthe Sunni militant group have also killed gay men in Derna, a city that is roughly180 miles east of Benghazi.

He said that international human rights groups have been working with himfor more than a year to help him leave Libya. The activist told the Blade he hopesto resettle in Canada.

He didn’t immediately respond to acall from the Blade to his New York Cityoffi ce at the international investmentfirm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, where

he works. But in a Facebook posting inMarch, Mehlman made it clear he was notsupporting Trump.

Among other things, he criticizedTrump for claiming he needed to doresearch to find out whom former Ku KluxKlan leader David Duke was after rumorssurfaced that Duke was supportingTrump for president. Leaders shouldn’tneed research to reject support from theKlan, Mehlman wrote in his posting.

Scott Evertz, a gay Republican activistfrom Wisconsin who President Bushnamed as director of the White HouseOffi ce of National AIDS Policy , said he hasvoted for every Republican presidentialcandidate since Ronald Reagan.

He said he cannot support Trumpbecause of strong differences he has overTrump’s stated positions on foreign policyand national security, many of which

have been riddled with inconsistencies,Evertz said.Although he is unsure of where Trump

stands on LGBT issues, Evertz said hecould not support Trump regardless ofwhether his positions on LGBT rightsand foreign policy were consistent withhis own due to Trump’s demeanor andtemperament.

“I’m terribly troubled by the meanspiritedness that is the Trump campaign andhas happened since the campaign began– the name calling, the suggestion aboutthe behavior of immigrants, the attitude

towards women,” Evertz told the Blade.“My parents didn’t raise me to behave

Gregory Angelo, president ofthe national LGBT group Log CabinRepublicans, said the organization hasa longstanding policy of not endorsinga presidential candidate until after theRepublican National Convention, whenthe candidate is offi cially nominated.

not supporting Trump. Other Log Cabinactivists, including one of the group’sfounders in the 1980s, Frank Ricchiazziof Nevada and his partner, longtime GOPactivist Bordon Moller, are backing Trump.

Also supporting Trump is longtime gayRepublican activist and former Log CabinAIDS issues adviser Jim Driscoll, also ofNevada, and gay Massachusetts formerGOP congressional candidate Richard Tisei.

“I plan to vote for Trump,” said Tisei.“I feel that Hillary Clinton clearly lacksthe basic ethical standards that all ingovernment must share,” he said. “Trumpis also the best hope to change thenational GOP’s position on social issues,as evidenced by his recent stand on theNorth Carolina law.”

Tisei was referring to Trump’s recentcomment that he did not think NorthCarolina’s controversial, recently passed“bathroom bill” was needed. Critics ofthe law, including LGBT activists, sayit singles out transgender people fordiscrimination.

Gay conservative GOP activistRichard Grenell, who served in the Bush

administration as a foreign policy adviserat the United Nations and who workedbriefly for former Republican presidentialcandidate Mitt Romney in 2012, told FoxNews he hasn’t offi cially endorsed Trump.

But in a Fox News interview last monthGrenell praised a speech Trump deliveredoutlining his foreign policy positions.

“There are some issues I think he has toiron out,” Grenell said of Trump’s foreignpolicy positions. “But overall I thoughtthat it was a speech that really challengesthe elites in Washington, the status quo,”he said. “Some of these ideas are long

overdue and good. And yet the statusquo types, the elites in Washington, aregoing to have their hair on fire becausethey can’t control this guy.”

D.C. gay Libertarian Party activistMartin Moulton said he has joined anewly created group called Libertariansfor Trump because he believes Trumpis in a position to advance libertarianpolicies. Moulton told the Blade he alsobelieves Trump would be supportive onLGBT issues.

Angelo, Log Cabin’s current president, said that while the group won’t make apresidential endorsement decision untilafter the Republican Convention in July,he said Log Cabin’s board won’t makea final decision on whether to endorseTrump at that time unless two conditionsare met.

“Number one, we would need tosurvey our members around thecountry to determine whether theywould personally support a Log CabinRepublicans endorsement of DonaldTrump for president,” he said.

“The second, I would need to meet at

the very least with the Trump campaignif not the man himself because I think atthe very least we would need to discussspecifically where Trump stands on awhole host of issues,” said Angelo.

“I am on record as saying if DonaldTrump won the Republican presidentialnomination quantifiably he would be themost pro-gay nominee our party has everhad, not just because he has attendeda same-sex wedding or believes thatdiscrimination is wrong,” Angelo said.

According to Angelo, Trump hasdistinguished himself by saying in thepast that he supports amending the

U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 to includea provision banning sexual orientationdiscrimination and by giving “tens ofthousands of dollars to gay charities,”including AIDS-related charities impactinggay men.

“But as with so many other things withTrump, he seems to have vacillated attimes from the sympathetic tone that he’sexhibited to date to the LGBT community,”Angelo continued. “And all those thingsgive me pause,” he said, especially Trump’srecent “chumminess” with anti-gay

religious right figures Jerry Falwell Jr., PatRobertson, and Tony Perkins.

“So until and unless we’re able to getsome definitive answers to whetherDonald Trump would do no harm to theprogress we’ve seen in LGBT rights todate in this country or perhaps even bean ally, I’m not going to put the weightof our organization and its name or itsbrand behind his candidacy,” said Angelo.

Despite this cautionary note, Angelosaid that in his travels throughout thecountry to meet with Log Cabin chapter

members and rank and file LGBTRepublicans he has found that most LGBTRepublicans in all parts of the countryexcept the Washington, D.C. to New YorkCity corridor are supporting Trump.

“People who live in or betweenWashington, D.C. and New York City arealmost to a man never for Trump andmany are now considering supportingHillary Clinton,” he said.

“LGBT Republicans I know who liveoutside that Acela corridor are 100percent for Trump right now,” he said, referring to the Acela Amtrak train thatconnects D.C. to New York.

Angelo said he couldn’t predict howmany LGBT Republicans would followthe path of those — including gay formerGOP activist Charles Francis — who aresupporting Hillary Clinton for president.

Francis, who led a gays-for-George W.Bush effort during the 2000 presidentialcampaign, left the Republican Partyin 2004 after Bush and the GOPestablishment came out in support of aconstitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

“I am an ex-Republican for Hillary and adonor to her campaign,” Francis told the Blade.

“Trump is more than a horrendousdemagogue,” he said. “He is a threat toour democracy itself.”

contained a number of specific referencesto the trans community. Beyer alsopraised Assistant U.S. Attorney Generalfor Civil Rights Vanita Gupta for pointingout during Monday’s press conference inWashington that “transgender men aremen — they live, work and study as men”and “transgender women are women —

they live, work and study as women.”“Today was the trans community’s 60s

civil rights moment, that moment whenthe United States government stood talland proud and told a state of the neo-Confederacy that they were in violationof multiple laws in their pursuit oftransphobic discrimination,” wrote Beyer.

Monica Roberts, a Houston-based transactivist who publishes the TransGriot blog, told the Washington Blade that she wascrying when Lynch said, “We see you; westand with you and we will do everything

we can to protect you going forward.”“It made me exceedingly proud that our

attorney general said that,” Roberts toldthe Blade. “It made me prouder still as anunapologetic black trans American thatshe was the person saying these wordson national television while serving atthe pleasure of the first African-Americanpresident who is the undisputed champwhen it comes to trans human rights issues.”

Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a California-based activist, organized the firstTransgender Day of Remembrance as a

way to honor Rita Hester, a trans womanwho was murdered inside her Bostonapartment in 1998.

Smith on Monday wrote on her Twitterpage that Lynch’s comments gave her“life” and “humanity.”

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory onMarch 23 signed HB 2, which prohibitstrans people from using public restroomsconsistent with their gender identity andbans local municipalities from enactingLGBT-inclusive nondiscriminationordinances. The North Carolina Legislatureapproved the bill earlier that day inresponse to an LGBT rights measure theCharlotte City Council approved.

The Justice Department’s lawsuitalleges that HB 2 violates Title VII of theCivil Rights Act of 1964. It also accusesthe North Carolina Department ofPublic Safety and the University of NorthCarolina of violating Title VII, Title IX ofthe Education Amendments of 1972 andthe Violence Against Women Act throughtheir compliance with the law.

Then-U.S. Attorney General Eric Holderin 2014 said Title VII — which specifically

addresses workplace discrimination— protects trans people. The EqualEmployment Opportunity Commissionruled last summer that discriminationbased on sexual orientation amounts to

sex discrimination under the statute.Title IX bans schools receiving federal

funds from discriminating on the basisof sex. The Justice Department has saidTitle IX requires school districts to allowtrans students to use restrooms thatcorrespond to their gender identity.

“They created state-sponsoreddiscrimination against transgenderindividuals, who simply seek to engage in

the most private of functions in a placeof safety and security — a right taken forgranted by most of us,” said Lynch duringher press conference.

The Justice Department on May 4 sent aletter to McCrory’s administration that saidit had until Monday to stop enforcing HB 2.

McCrory told Chris Wallace during aninterview on “Fox News Sunday” on May9 that the deadline was “unrealistic.”The governor on Monday filed a federallawsuit against the Justice Department.

“This was a substantial request with

very serious implications,” McCrorytold reporters during a Raleigh pressconference. “The U.S. government gaveus a mere three business days to respondto this letter.”

McCrory’s administration on May 6asked the Justice Department for anadditional two weeks to respond to itsletter. The governor told reporters itrefused the request “unless I made astatement where I would publicly agreewith their interpretation of federal law.”

“I could not agree to that because I

do not agree with their interpretation offederal law,” said McCrory. “That is whythis morning I have asked a federal courtto clarify what the law actually is.”

Lynch acknowledged during her pressconference that McCrory had requestedan extension of the deadline. She said itwas “under active consideration.”

“But instead of replying to our offer orproviding a certification, this morning, the state of North Carolina and itsgovernor chose to respond by suing theDepartment of Justice,” said Lynch. “Asa result of their decisions, we are nowmoving forward.”

The Alliance Defending Freedom,an anti-LGBT legal group, defendedMcCrory in a press release it issuedafter his administration sued the JusticeDepartment.

“The federal government is threateningNorth Carolina for lawfully enactingcommon-sense legislation that simplyprotects people’s privacy and respectsthe right of private businesses to set theirown policies,” said Alliance DefendingFreedom Legal Counsel Kellie Fiedorek.

HB 2 has sparked widespread outrageamong LGBT rights advocates and theirsupporters.

PayPal cancelled plans to expand itsoperations in North Carolina in response

to McCrory’s decision to sign the law. NBACommissioner Adam Silver has said it couldconsider moving its 2017 All-Star Game outof Charlotte if HB 2 remains in place.

The British Foreign Offi ce last monthissued an advisory warning travelersabout HB 2 and Mississippi’s sweepingreligious freedom law that is scheduledto take effect on July 1.

“The lawsuit that was filed today is just

another tactic to delay a decision and isa continued waste of taxpayer dollarswhen it is already very clear that the onlyoption is a full repeal of HB 2,” said Chris

Sgro, executive director of Equality NorthCarolina, a statewide LGBT advocacygroup, in a statement.

Freedom to Work President TicoAlmeida agreed, noting to the Bladethe judge who has been assigned toMcCrory’s lawsuit ruled last year that atrans person who alleges discriminationbecause of their gender identity can claimsex discrimination under Title VII.

“The governor is wasting North Carolinataxpayer dollars on a shoddy legalstrategy that seems unlikely to succeed,”said Almeida.

    Fanning jokes about stalled confirmation

Eric Fanning on Saturday jokedabout his stalled nomination to

become the first openly gay Armysecretary during his speech atthe American Military PartnerAssociation’s annual gala in D.C.

Fanning asked Edith Windsor, theNew York widow who successfullychallenged the Defense of MarriageAct before the U.S. Supreme Courtin 2013, to become his “confirmationcampaign manager” after he tookthe stage at the Hyatt RegencyWashington.

    President Obama last November

nominated Fanning to become Armysecretary.U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.),

who chairs the Senate ArmedServices Committee, on April 28tried to prompt a vote on Fanning’snomination on the Senate floor. U.S.Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) blocked it,citing concerns over Obama’s attempts to close Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Fanning would be the first openly gay person to head any branch of the U.S.military.

“Considering many of us in this room lived the horrors of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’tTell,’ words can’t express how much such a historic nomination means to ourcommunity,” said American Military Partner Association President AshleyBroadway-Mack as she introduced Fanning.

Windsor, who was honored during the gala, described Roberts as a “jerk” aftershe accepted her award.

The American Military Family Association also honored Jim Obergefell, the leadplaintiff in the case that prompted the U.S. Supreme Court to extend marriagerights to same-sex couples across the country in June 2015.

Thom Kostura and Ijpe DeKoe, a gay couple from Tennessee who wereplaintiffs in the Obergefell case, were among those who were also honored atthe gala. The American Military Family Association presented an award to ArmyCpl. Laila Villanueva, a transgender woman who is married to Air Force SeniorAirman Logan Ireland, who is also trans.

Fanning in his speech reiterated his support for trans service members to beable to serve openly.

“We’re all in this together, regardless of race, orientation, gender or genderidentity,” he said. “We are not until everyone is able to live up to his or herpotential and for us that means the entire L, G, B and T community.”

    Education, orientation factors in depression

SYDNEY — A new study from the Journal of Adolescent Health finds that thoughts ofsuicide are highest among young bisexual women, Gay News Network, an Australiangay news source, and other outlets report. It also found that bi men and women areoverall more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

Researchers surveyed 2,513 people ages 14-24. Among their findings:• White men and women shared similar problems but males did not show significant

risks for mental health.• While lesbians tended to think about suicide more frequently than straight women,

they were not at a higher risk for depression, anxiety or distress than straight women.• Researchers suspect bi or questioning men and women suffer most because they

are discriminated against by straight people and members of the LGBT community.

“I think the failure to include bisexual individuals in research studies reflects a largerculture of bisexual invisibility, and with regard to questioning individuals,” Annie Shearer,a research assistant with Drexel’s Family Intervention Science program, was quoted ashaving said. “I think people assume that is a temporary identity, causing them to beoverlooked, too. But during adolescence and young adulthood, when many individualsare still exploring their sexuality, it’s particularly important to include both the bisexualand questioning groups.”

Younger age, lower education and lower income increased risk for poor mentalhealth among gay and bisexual men, according to a new British study study reportedby Healio.

“Mental illness is one of the biggest health challenges facing the world today and canaffect people from all walks of life. We know minority groups are at higher risk of poormental health than the heterosexual majority, however the mental health differences

within sexual minorities is unclear,” Ford

    Hickson

of the London School of Hygieneand Tropical Medicine, said in a press release. “Our study showed that among gay andbisexual men, age and ethnicity had a significant impact on mental health, as did incomeand education. This is possibly because men are better able to cope with homophobiathe older they are, or if they are relatively privileged in other areas of their lives.”

To assess differences in mental health indicators among gay and bisexual men, researchers evaluated Internet health survey responses from 5,799 men aged 16 yearsand older who were sexually attracted to other men. Median age was 32 years.

Overall, 21.3 percent of participants reported depression, 17.1 percentreported anxiety, 6.5 percent reported self-harm within the last year and 3percent attempted suicide.

All of these mental health outcomes were associated with younger age, lowereducation and lower income, Healio reports.

Men aged younger than 26 years were two times more likely to have depression oranxiety and seven times more likely to self-harm or attempt suicide than men aged 45years and older. Men in the lowest income bracket were two to three times more likelyto experience depression, anxiety, self-harm or attempted suicide than those in thehighest bracket. Men with lower levels of education were approximately two times aslikely to experience mental health outcomes than those with higher levels of education, the article said.

Being of a racial or ethnic minority or feeling sexual attraction towards women inaddition to men was associated with depression. Cohabitating with a male partner andliving in London had protective effects on mental health, researchers found.

    Being gay impacts end-of-life care

LONDON — A study from London’s Care Quality Commission found that beinggay is a factor in receiving poor end-of-life care, the Sun reports.

Four in 10 hospitals — about 42 percent — were found lacking, the article notes.“Poor end of life care denies people a dignified, peaceful death and causes

suffering to them and their loved ones,” Jane Morgue of Healthwatch Englandwas quoted as having said.

Inspectors examined 40 clinical commissioning groups around the country, who are responsible for buying services from hospitals, hospices and other careproviders.

They found only 27 had assessed the end of life needs of people liv ing in theirarea, and only seven had specially commissioned a service as a result.

The regulator says this is not right because “treating everyone with the sameapproach does not necessarily mean they will receive good care or have equal

access to services,” the Sun reports.Being over age 85, LGBT, black or from another ethnic minority increases the

likelihood of receiving faulty care, the Sun reports.
