large were however heavy both American Tobacco anti Continental To bacco around yesterdays final prices in both stocks In the railway list notably strong fea- tures were Missouri Pacific Atchison Union Pacific the Wabash issues and Southern Railway The extent of the ad vances scored In the railway list invited profit realizing sales after early dealings- In which a number of recessions were scored The local traction stocks were stronger and more animated than for some time particularly for Metropolitan Street Railway- In the Industrial quarter the United States teel stocks were active but little dealings In the tobacco shares Amalga- mated Copper was the only active feature of the socalled specialties and was firm This mornings news contained little was definite with any bearing upon market The trading continued largely professional and for the most part seem eo1 to be altogether on the matters already The tobacco shares sit new high prices bank statement made a fine show- that the insiders are trying to make the best showing possible American Tobacco advanced to 336 and Tobacco common advanced ttrc both new high prices Later in the s2sk h there was a decline in eachcage which however the level of the group showing a ijne net gain for the the best on the list Nothing new regarding the affairs of the companies f heard and Jt is supposed that the in The issues were stronger There has been much talk of the good prespects of the company recently espe- cially since it became known that a through line to Pittsburg is to be built The debEntur B bonds and the stock are both considered good purchases Mr Gould Is quoted as very bullish on all the Gould Issues but there i not the same reason for expecting some of the other stocks of the group to ad- vance sharply One sale of Northern Pacific was made today at 300 There are many stories afloat regarding large sums of money lost by Important people on the short side of this stock None of them can be traced back to their foundation It seems rather acfeurd to believe that any competent marKet trader would sell the stock short tier the corner was known T IB Southern Railway securities were fairly strops as were the llonon issues The st ry that the Southern to absorb tHe Monon is again heard It now to soon just how much of the Elaborate programme of consolidations throughout the country was destroyed by the recent panic Some people believe thit all tho schemes will be carried through quite as if there had no panIc but others say that the insiders will be afraid t venture their money in such plans now The Seuthern prefer- red looks to be a good purchase in any event but many people consider the too high at present unless there IB important reorganization plan to be carried through that would change the status of the company The Atchison issues were fairly ttrong t flrsc but went off later There is every reason to that Pennsylvania people are telling the truth when they as rt that they are nvt buying Atchison se- curities at with any idea of gaining control of the corapanv It is pointed out that thip fact seems t be established ly the refusal reoently of President Cassatt to allow Vice President Pea to join the Atchison board The ststement of the Atchison for is nearly due and it is understood that it will make an excellent showing Judge Gary Chairman of United States Likely to Their Interests BALTIMORE May success of the surety business in this country during the last ten years has caused attention to directed toward the possibility of formIng a big combination of the larger cgmpanles and a movement is on foot It is understood to unite them The putting under oh head of all the corporations a bonding business ould obliterate competition which has caused some les- sening in the percentage of profits within the last few years and make possible the reduction of expenses which arc now much greater than formerly though the companies are it is said more prosperous now than ever before Foul companies are said to transact the great bulk of the bonding business of the United States and two of them are In this Fidelity and Deposit Com- pany of Maryland and the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company The other two are the American Surety Com panyof New York and the Pacific Surety Company of San Francisco The Ameri- can Bonding and Trust Company of this city Is a comparative newcomer In the field but its business hris developed rap- idly and there Is also a bonding in Pittsburg besides some smaller con- cerns elsewhere The Fidelity and Deposit Company has recently opened an office in for the transaction of business In Great Brit tain being the first American compant of its kind to enter that field Enquiries have been made regarding the securing of options on the stock of at least one of the Baltimore companies and it Is said that large New York financial Interests are behind the plan The name of J Pierpont Morgan las been mentioned In connection with it but whether he is actually interested in the movement is not definitely known here Parties In In terest are inclined to think that the con summation of the proposed consolidation scheme Is distant though they do not deny its feasibility nor do they question that it could be made to increase the ri t profits and ala in preventing the growth of competition- A gentleman familiar with conditions in th bonding business yesterday expressed the opinion that the success attending one of the newer companies had alarmed some of the older corporations which feared that further competition might de velop and accordingly parties interested inclined to look with more or less favor upon the plans for a combine SHOT THROUGH HEART A Greenfield X Y Instantly Killed J Independent Company to Be Formed l y Retiring jOOlcinI sEW YORK May 25 AheU rival Is to be the outgrowth of the breach in the Hour trust It was announced yesterday that the two officers of the trust who re- signed after a lively row Thursday are to organize an independent concern It was freely admitted yesterday that- a lively rumpus had taken place The was the hasty resignations of George William Ballou the treasurer and C F Shirk the general manager There was no formality about their gOing The dif- ferences which have been growing for some time came to an acute crisis and after a decisive interview at the oiScea in the Produce Exchange Messrs Ballou and Shirk slammed their desks and left They got out and they got out quick said William Brookfield one of the receiv- ers of the HeckerJonesJewell Milling Company of which the two men were of- ficers yesterday This company is the largest company in the flour trust It has been in the hands of receivers for four teen months There was a disagree ment Mr Ballou and Mr Shirk were not pleased and they left I have nothing further to say about the matter The company is getting on in fine shape and the disagreement has not threatened the progress of settling its affairs We hope to have it in shape for the receivers to retire before long Others as reticent as Mr Brook field in talking about the row though all admitted there had been one There was a meeting of the Reorganization Commit tee of the States Flour Milling Company yesterday afternoon to consider the troubles The meeting was held at the offices of Brayton Ives who succeeded committee William Xelson Cromwell of counsel for the Flour Trust was present to advise the committee Ing Mr made a The reorganization committee retired George William Ballou As of the Reorganization Committee and elect ed Scott Tremaine to succeed him Mr resignation from the Hecker JoncsJewell Milling Company was made yesterday cannot say other changes will follow or not Concerning the differences which led to resigna tion of Mr BallOu and Mr Shirk I can sTay nothing That a personal Mr has of the reorganization committee for two years He was a large stockholder of the Hecker Company Mr Ballou and Mr Shirk yes large offices in the Broad Exchange on Broad Street J number of clerks were busy straightening the office furniture which had been moved in hastily Neither dis- posed to talk about tIe Asked about the report thdt a mill was to be the outcome of the difficulty Mr Bal lou said Some friends of Mr Shirk are going to a mill for lie is a practical The details of the matter are not yet settled and I cannot say more about the enterprise at this time Much talk was on the Produce by the resignation of the officers Shirk is one of the beetknown figures on change is an energetic young man from the West Mr BaIlout and Mr Shirk are largely Interested in the Ameri- can Malting property at Fortyeighth Street and East River They will build it was stated yesterday a grain elevator th re with a capacity of 3000 bushels It is thought that other disaffected factors in the Flour Trust may join with Shirk and Ballou What Mr Brookfield says Is correct said Mr Shirk yesterday There was a disagreement He and I were on oppos- ing Mr Ballou and I left I do not care to so Into details We arc to start a new mill but there Is nothing to be given out about that now The Flour Trust is hereafter to be known as the Standard Milling Company Gfn Samu l Thomas is president Not all of the HftkerJoneaJewfll mills will be included in the reorgitniz- ationJPPLETE RESTORED BY bank statement figures were muchbetter than had been expected generally

was an Increase In cash of more9039000 and an increase in the

reserve of about S0 0 0 theof loans aiding In making the favor

Able showing The figures of the statementwere as follows Reserves Increased 79St500 loans decreased 114638500 specie Increased S17SM legals Increased 21S35deposits decreased S10a66SGd circulationdecreased Wa The increase in cash intlew of the shipments of gold during the

was somewhat of a surprise Thestatement suggests that the insiders are

trying to make the best showing possible

American Tobacco advanced to 336 andTobacco common advanced

ttrc both new high prices Later in thes2sk h there was a decline in eachcagewhich however the level of thegroup showing a ijne net gain for the

the best on the list Nothing newregarding the affairs of the companiesf heard and Jt is supposed that the in

The issues were strongerThere has been much talk of the goodprespects of the company recently espe-cially since it became known that athrough line to Pittsburg is to be builtThe debEntur B bonds and the

stock are both considered goodpurchases Mr Gould Is quoted as verybullish on all the Gould Issues but therei not the same reason for expecting someof the other stocks of the group to ad-vance sharply

One sale of Northern Pacific was madetoday at 300 There are many storiesafloat regarding large sums of money lostby Important people on the short side ofthis stock None of them can be tracedback to their foundation It seems ratheracfeurd to believe that any competentmarKet trader would sell the stock short

tier the corner was known

T IB Southern Railway securities werefairly strops as were the llonon issuesThe st ry that the Southern to absorbtHe Monon is again heard It now

to soon just how much of theElaborate programme of consolidationsthroughout the country was destroyed bythe recent panic Some people believethit all tho schemes will be carriedthrough quite as if there had nopanIc but others say that the insiderswill be afraid t venture their money insuch plans now The Seuthern prefer-red looks to be a good purchasein any event but many people considerthe too high at present unlessthere IB important reorganizationplan to be carried through that wouldchange the status of the company

The Atchison issues were fairly ttrongt flrsc but went off later There is every

reason to that Pennsylvaniapeople are telling the truth when they as

rt that they are nvt buying Atchison se-curities at with any idea of gainingcontrol of the corapanv It is pointed outthat thip fact seems t be established lythe refusal reoently of President Cassattto allow Vice President Pea to join theAtchison board The ststement of theAtchison for is nearly dueand it is understood that it will make anexcellent showing

A SURETY

Prominent Companies Likely toTheir Interests

BALTIMORE May success ofthe surety business in this country duringthe last ten years has caused attention to

directed toward the possibility offormIng a big combination of the largercgmpanles and a movement is on foot Itis understood to unite them The puttingunder oh head of all the corporations

a bonding business ould obliteratecompetition which has caused some les-sening in the percentage of profits withinthe last few years and make possible thereduction of expenses which arc nowmuch greater than formerly though thecompanies are it is said more prosperousnow than ever before

Foul companies are said to transact thegreat bulk of the bonding business of theUnited States and two of them are Inthis Fidelity and Deposit Com-pany of Maryland and the United StatesFidelity and Guaranty Company Theother two are the American Surety Companyof New York and the Pacific SuretyCompany of San Francisco The Ameri-can Bonding and Trust Company of thiscity Is a comparative newcomer In thefield but its business hris developed rap-idly and there Is also a bondingin Pittsburg besides some smaller con-cerns elsewhere

The Fidelity and Deposit Company hasrecently opened an office in forthe transaction of business In Great Brittain being the first American compant ofits kind to enter that field

Enquiries have been made regarding thesecuring of options on the stock of atleast one of the Baltimore companies andit Is said that large New York financialInterests are behind the plan The nameof J Pierpont Morgan las been mentionedIn connection with it but whether he isactually interested in the movement isnot definitely known here Parties In Interest are inclined to think that the consummation of the proposed consolidationscheme Is distant though they do notdeny its feasibility nor do they questionthat it could be made to increase the ri tprofits and ala in preventing the growthof competition-

A gentleman familiar with conditions inth bonding business yesterday expressedthe opinion that the success attendingone of the newer companies had alarmedsome of the older corporations whichfeared that further competition might develop and accordingly parties interested

inclined to look with more or lessfavor upon the plans for a combine

A ROW IN THE FLOUR TRUST

An Independent Company to BeFormed l y Retiring jOOlcinI

sEW YORK May 25 AheU rival Is tobe the outgrowth of the breach in theHour trust It was announced yesterdaythat the two officers of the trust who re-signed after a lively row Thursday are toorganize an independent concern

It was freely admitted yesterday that-a lively rumpus had taken place The

was the hasty resignations of GeorgeWilliam Ballou the treasurer and C FShirk the general manager There wasno formality about their gOing The dif-ferences which have been growing forsome time came to an acute crisis andafter a decisive interview at the oiSceain the Produce Exchange Messrs Ballouand Shirk slammed their desks and left

They got out and they got out quicksaid William Brookfield one of the receiv-ers of the HeckerJonesJewell MillingCompany of which the two men were of-

ficers yesterday This company is thelargest company in the flour trust It hasbeen in the hands of receivers for fourteen months There was a disagreement Mr Ballou and Mr Shirk were notpleased and they left I have nothingfurther to say about the matter Thecompany is getting on in fine shape andthe disagreement has not threatened theprogress of settling its affairs We hopeto have it in shape for the receivers toretire before long

Others as reticent as Mr Brookfield in talking about the row though alladmitted there had been one There wasa meeting of the Reorganization Committee of the States Flour MillingCompany yesterday afternoon to considerthe troubles The meeting was held atthe offices of Brayton Ives who succeededcommittee William Xelson Cromwell ofcounsel for the Flour Trust was presentto advise the committeeIng Mr made a

Some friends of Mr Shirk are going toa mill for lie is a practicalThe details of the matter arenot yet settled and I cannot say more

about the enterprise at this timeMuch talk was on the Produce
