Recent Events October 11– Golf at Musket Ridge On an October 11th afternoon, 19 ASGA friends had a very enjoyable experience on the scenic, rolling fairways and enjoyable layout at Musket Ridge Golf Course in My-ersville, Maryland. While the day began with ominous weather forecasts, the players started their rounds with cloudy skies but no rain. No rain checks were needed. In fact, as play progressed, the skies cleared and the sun came out to reward our intrepid group's patience with a glorious afternoon of fall golf. Thanks to everyone who came out and played, and congratulations to the closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par-3 holes:

#2: Keith Proudfoot #8: Leesa Weiss #13: Joe McCloskey #17: Joe McCloskey

The players ended their rounds by meet-ing together in the Musket Ridge Club House to share stories of the day's hap-penings and to catch up with new and old friends. This was followed by dinner nearby at The Main Cup in Middletown, MD. For those of you who were unable to join us, this was the first time we had sched-uled something at Musket Ridge in a while. But the positive response from our players suggests it may be a good idea to plan for another outing to Musket Ridge next season. ~Event Coordinator: Scott Hall

October 17 – Golf at Lansdowne, Robert Trent Jones Course 32 players played on a beautiful sunny, but windy day, which was quite a contrast for when we got rained out before. Cart path only, which meant a lot of walking, but considering that most of us spend too much time either sitting in front of a com-puter, in the car, or in front of the TV, it was probably good for us. The winners on the Par 3’s were Sam Tolbert, Leslie Mangeri, Shannon Bonk, and Leesa Weiss. We also had a ran-domly picked (good sport winner) Kath-leen Griffin. Perhaps if we play Lansdowne again, we can try their other course (Greg Norman). Thanks for all those good sports that played. ~Event Coordinator: Keith Proudfoot

Rules and More Rules Bending branch out of the way of your swing Q. Larry was playing in a stroke play event. As he too often does, he was play-ing most of the round on the edge of the woods rather than in the fairway. On hole # 5 his ball was tucked up against a very large bush in the rough. On preparing to take his stance and practice his set-up swing it became apparent that a branch would inhibit (don’t you just love that word) him from making an unrestricted back-swing. Larry carefully bent the interfering branch back and tucked it behind a larger branch that held it out of his way. Larry then proceeded to top the ball but did get it out into the fairway. But I digress. Excuse

me, got carried away. Now back to Larry. His opponent called called a 2 stoke penalty. Larry protested. What is the correct answer below?

A. Larry did nothing wrong bending the branch out of the way of his swing, so long as he did not break a branch. No penalty is warranted.

B. The opponent was correct. Larry can not bend branches. But the penalty is only one stroke, not two.

C. The opponent was correct. Larry can not bend branches. Two strokes is the correct penalty.

D. That is an obvious 15 yard pen-alty. Ball is to be re-spotted at the point of infraction, 1st down.

AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is C. Larry was wrong and should have been assessed a two (2) stroke penalty. Larry was in violation of USGA Rule 13-2 which pertains to “Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing, or Line of Play”. The rule is very explicit, you are not allowed to im-prove your lie, area of stance or swing, or your line of play. The basic play it as it lies rule. The penalty for violating the rule in match play is loss of the hole; in stroke play the penalty is two strokes. Larry had options he could have made. 1. He could have declared the ball un-

playable and taken a penalty and drop.

2. Or he could have played it where it was in a manner that did not entail bending the branch and breaching the rules. He could have for example

choked down on the club and made a shorter swing. Conversly, he could have taken a full swing and hit the branch free of penalty and swung down trying to make good contact with the ball.

Status of "GIMMEE" putts Q. Larry switched to a 5 foot belly putter a number of years ago. His putting has not improved, it may have even worsened. But he persists. Then again, he uses his putter to determine if he can take a “GIMMEE.” He takes anything within the leather. That long belly putter gives him an extra foot or two of “GIMMEES.” According to the rules of golf, a “GIMMEE” putt is any putt that is within: What is the correct answer?

A. One foot of the hole B. Two feet of the hole C. Within the distance from the putter

head to the leather. D. There is no such thing as a

“GIMMEE” putt within the rules of golf.

AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is D, there is no recognized “GIMMEE” putt. While the rules allow a stroke / putt to be conceded, having the same effect as a “GIMMEE,” there can be no agreement in advance to concede a stroke / putt of a specified length. All putts are required to be putted / holed out. Your competitor may concede a stroke, but any agreement to concede all putts of a set length is a breach of rule 1-3, (Agreement to Waive Rules) the penalty for which is disqualification.
