2015 Annual Report

My name is Mike Robinson, and I am extremely proud to serve as Washington County Sheriff. From my earliest duties as a patrol officer in 1980, to my current role as Sheriff, I have never forgotten the importance of my responsibilities to provide law enforcement services for all residents. Along with an experienced and dedicated staff, our Office remains vigilant and vows to work to keep the area in which we live safe and secure. As always, we remain committed to excellence.

Sheriff Mike Robinson

It is the duty of the sheriff to serve, execute and return writs or other legal process issued by a lawful authority. The sheriff shall prepare and file an annual inventory statement of county personal property in his or her custody. The sheriff has charge and custody of the jail and its prisoners, except in counties where a county board of corrections exists and has duties over the jail.

It is the duty of the sheriff to keep the peace, apprehend criminals and perform other duties as peace officer. The sheriff may appoint deputies but such deputies may not be the county treasurer, clerk, register of deeds or surveyor.

Sheriff’s Duties

It is the mission of the Washington County Sheriff's Office to protect the lives and property of the people in Washington County. To accomplish the mission, the members of the Washington County Sheriff's Office are committed to honesty and integrity in their relationship with the people in the county and within the sheriff's office. We have a commitment to respect individual dignity in all people and to be caring and understanding. We also have a commitment to provide service in a fair, consistent and impartial manner.

Our Mission

Washington County is located in eastern Nebraska on the Missouri River. It was explored as early as 1739 by Paul and Pierre Malleet, who were on a trapping expedition to Canada. In 1804, Lewis and Clark reported the establishment of the new United States government to a council of Indian chiefs near the present site of Fort Calhoun. As a result of this Council, Fort Atkinson was established in 1819 and served as a key Midwestern outpost until its abandonment in 1827.

The first permanent settlement in Washington County was made in 1854. In that same year, the county was organized as one of the eight original counties proclaimed by acting Governor Thomas B. Cuming. The county seat has been located in three different towns: Fort Calhoun, DeSoto, and finally at Blair, its present site since 1869.

Corrections DivisionPersonnelWashington County Corrections Division is comprised of 1 uniformed sworn Sergeant, 4 uniformed sworn Jail Deputies, 10 civilian Correction Officers (1Corporal), 1 part-time Court Room Security and 1 Dietary Coordinator. The uniformed sworn Jail Deputies are responsible for employee/inmate supervision within the jail, District and County Courtroom Security, local and long-distance prisoner transports, Courthouse security, Mental Health Board security and uniformed patrol activities when necessary. A Jail Administrator is responsible for the overall supervision of the jail.

Jail Housing & ServicesMale and female inmates, 16 years of age and older, are housed in the facility with length of stays ranging from a few days to over a year. The jail is statutorily required to provide access to church services, substance abuse counseling, professional legal visits, HHS counseling, medical treatment, dental care, USDA dietary meals (3 meals per day per inmate to include one hot meal), visitations, 5 hours of “out of cell” recreational activities per week, and educational opportunities along with many other inmate related services.

Inmate TransportsJail personnel travel approximately 40,000 to 50,000 miles per year transporting inmates to and from other facilities for court appearances, medically related appointments, or to serve sentences in State or Federal correctional facilities.
