October President’s Report Greetings, I am glad to report that the last club outing was well attended and everyone got to play with some fish. I was hoping to catch a Bull Trout, but not this trip. Maybe next time. The Fall of the year can be some of the best fishing

of the year. The rivers are low and the water has turned colder. The fish are looking for their last big meal before winter. I try to spend as much time as I can on the water this time of the year, October and November. Just a reminder, that some of your trout waters will be closing Oct.31, so plan a trip or two soon. The club will be placing an order for T-shirts with the club logo on them. Bob Pryor has a write up on the shirts. The next Club outing will be at Hagg Lake on Oct 19, and there has been a request for more hot soup for lunch. The soup was a big hit at the last event.

News and Announcements Tshirts! We are still working on acquiring T-shirts for the club. At the last meeting we showed

everyone the logo that would be on the shirt and asked for those present to sign up for a shirt.

We got a commitment for 13 shirts, but this is still far below the 36 we need to guarantee the

lowest possible price. We are asking members to purchase a shirt to show their solidarity with

the club and add a unique piece of clothing to your wardrobe. Shirts will be priced from

between 16 and 20 dollars (CHEAP), depending on the

number we order. If you wish to purchase a shirt, sign

up at the October meeting, or send me or Chuck Cooney

your name, size (large to 3X), and the number of shirts you

would like to order. If you let us know by meeting time, we

can have the shirts ready for November. You might also

want to think about Christmas. These shirts would

make great gifts for family members and friends!

Urgent! The Oregon Council of the Fly Fishers International has an immediate need for a

Treasurer. Quick Book knowledge preferred, please help. Also a Conservation Chair to help oversee grant money that is available from both state and national FFI. Sherry Steele, President of the Oregon Council, has asked to find a person to run for President in June of 2020. The President is not expected to do everything because a great Board of Directors is in place to help. Interested parties please contact James Crislip WCFF Representative to OCFFI or Chuck Cooney President WCFF. Save the date March 13-14, 2020 Northwest Fly Tyers & Fly Fishing Expo: Fly casting classes 200 Tyers signed up for demonstrations Instructional classes on Tying & Casting FFI Casting Challenge Open Fly Casting Accuracy Competition And much more!

Outings Our outing on Laurance Lake proved to fun for all. Some had more fun than others, but everyone caught some fish. For me, the best part of the day was the lunch. Chuck made taco soup and Paul fried up quesedillas

right on the tailgate of his truck. Delicious. They promise to serve

the same at our next outing Hagg Lake, Saturday Oct, 19. Meet at Boat launch “C,” lunch at 12:30, Come when you want and fish as long as you want. Paul Keefner plans to start at 9 am.

Fly of the Month: The Awesome Fly By Layton and Ralph Brooks Background Ralph (a.k.a. Fishing Grandpa) spent a week with grandson Layton in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains north of Dubois, Wyoming fly fishing for Yellowstone Cutthroat. Lounging around camp one afternoon Layton asks Grandpa to help him tie a fly. Grandpa dragged out the gear and let Layton design his fly from hook to materials. Layton named the fly “The Awesome Fly.” The next day Layton was excited to test his fly so we tied it on. His first cast landed just across mid-stream. The fly slipped below the surface and began to swing slowly downstream. At the bottom of the swing the water erupted violently as a large cutthroat smashed the fly. Layton did not get the cutty landed, but his excitement over the fish taking HIS fly was truly a spectacle. By the way, Layton is just 6, and he has had a fly rod in his hand for a couple years now. I think it is safe to say he is probably “hooked.” It is never too early. Grandpa wrote this piece because Layton is not very good at typing or using Word yet!

How to Tie 1) Start the thread and lay down a thread base

on the shank. 2) At the back of the shank tie in a small bunch of

natural Wood Duck barbs from a flank feather. 3) Cover the shank from back to front with a thin coating of chartreuse thread or floss. 4) A bit behind the hook eye tie in a blond hen neck hackle with barbs somewhat longer than

the hook gap. Wrap the hackle 2-3 times toward the back, then wrap it forward and secure so that enough space is left for a small thread head.

5) Finish the fly with a neat thread head, whip finish, and cement.

Category Trout

Hook Nymph, 2X long, sizes 8-12

How to Fish The Awesome Fly works in both moving and still waters. Use a floating line and a basic wet

fly swing (throw the fly across the water and let it swing downstream. Using fly floatant is optional; use a little if you want the fly on top and none if you want the fly down a bit. The fly will also take fish using an intermediate sink line.
