Founded 1882. Enrollment: 1,450 from 45 states and 30 nations; Student-faculty ratio: 9:1; Average class size:15. About 75 percent of Whitman students live on campus.
Overall graduation rate of 88 percent and first-year to sophomore retention rate of 94 percent – both among the highest in the nation.
Facilities reflect Whitman’s excellence and devotion to students: the library, health center and computer labs are open 24/7, a $15.5 million renovation to the athletic center was completed in 2009, and a new visual arts center opened in 2008.
Award-winning students include 43 Fulbright recipients since 1999 as well as three Udall recipients, two National Science Foundation recipients, one Watson Fellow, one Emerson Hunger Fellow and two Truman finalists in 2009.
